Animerica's list of top 25 "Best" Made for tv Engl
I saw this posted at another forum I go to and thought I should post it here and start up a discussion. This is Animerica's list of the top 25 Best Made for Tv English dubs of anime series:
1. Astro Boy
2. Trigun
3. Dragon Ball Z
4. Sailor Moon
5. Gundam
6. Cowboy Bebop
7. Inuyasha
8. Robotech
9. Tenchi Muyo
10. Rurouni Kenshin
11. Speed Racer
12. Cardcaptors
13. Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnukuman Legacy
14. Voltron: Defender of the Universe
15. Yu Yu Hakusho
16. Witch Hunter Robin
17. Lupin the III
18. Wolf's Rain
19. Ronin Warriors
20. Gigantor
21. .hack
22. The Big O
23. Yu-Gi-Oh!
24. Star Blazers
25. Pokemon
They also have a short list of the worst Made for tv English dubs:
1. Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years
2. Battle of the Planets/G-Force
3. Superbook
4. Escaflowne
5. Samurai Pizza Cats
So, what're your thoughts on this? I'm surprised that Pokemon is number 25 on that list. I've always thought it had one of the better made for tv English dub. I've heard the movies were really screwed up, but I don't hear very many complaints about the English dub of the tvseries. I don't understand how the heck Cardcaptors got on that list of "Best" English dubs. Cardcaptors doesn't even deserve to be on that list at all. IMO, it should be number one on the list of top five worst English dubs. I don't think Sailor Moon and Yugioh should be on that list either, but that's just me. And I'm still confused as to why Robotech is so popular. ><

What were they smoking when they wrote that, and can I score some?

"Oh yeah. Someone is definitely tired of breathing." ("The Main Man", Part 1)
I'm writing this Sailor Moon/Green Lantern crossover AU fic called "Emerald Sunrise". It's a hybrid of Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance, and Comedy. It's about Ami (Sailor Mercury) getting a new boyfriend who just happens to be a member of The Green Lantern Corps. I'm also throwing in some other characters from other animes and some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the late '60's early '70's. I'm also illustrating it as well.
Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

Maybe it means "best made" in the twisted, non-existant definition of "popular"?
And, just a thought, but... Why does the TOP 20 list have 25 entries?

Yeah, they've got way too many bad ones on the good list, but then it's a trade mag, so it has to support "the industry."
On the other hand, no complaints about their top two for worst dubs. Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years is one of the worst debacles in the history of anime. For those who don't know, there were two series, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Queen Millenia, that they dubbed over and tried to pretend that they were one continuous series. I'll say that again: they tried to pretend they were one continuous series. Like if they dubbed Sailor Moon and Pokemon together, and you had Queen Beryl talking about her three new henchmen, Team Rocket, and the Senshi were talking about their friend Ash who was trying to find them. That's the kind of thing they tried to pull. I can buy that as the worst dub ever.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

And so according to Animerica, Robotech is better than that? Robotech was done the same way. They tried to combine three completly seperate series into a single show.

It says "best made for TV dubs", so perhaps there's some distinction there...

If you're going to agree with someone in a discussion, please actually add a little thingy besides just a basic 'I agree' type response. Again, this is pointless and a waste of space.
You tend to do this a lot. Please actually ADD to the discussion, or refrain from posting on that subject. It just wastes space and bandwidth. Thanks.

Now, where Animerica came up with this list, I don't know. Obviously their criteria for being the "Best english TV dubs" is a little................off.
It seems more like they just sat in a room and said to one another "Let's make a list! Quick! First one to 25 dubs wins!" And since those are the most POPULAR Anime TV dubs (not necisarrily the BEST), they were the ones chosen. Obviously accuracy from the Japanese to English versions was NOT part of the criteria unfortunately.

Dinozore brings up a good point: maybe they mean something along the lines of "best made for an American audience with such-and-such intended audience", in which case I could see their arguments; while not accurate translations of the original shows in the least, Sailormoon, and to a certain extent, Cardcaptors DO attempt to write semi-coherent storylines that effectively cater to their intended audiences. Yes, they were horrid dubs, but the lines that they spewed were the kind of things kids are likely to emulate.
On the other hand, there could also be a criteria in there about how effective these dubs were in increasing the popularity of the show. Going back to our namesake, Sailormoon was relatively unpopular in the US until the trainwreck of the DiC dub came along, which introduced a LOT of people to the franchise, undoubtably had a role in bringing over the manga, and made a lot of people into converts that came to like other anime, as well. In that regard, things like Cardcaptors and Pokemon are quite deserving of their positions, though one would expect things like Robotech and other old-school favorites to be higher ranked.
Of course, this is all speculation until I can get ahold of the article myself and read it to see what strange basis they're using as ranking criteria...>_>

Yeah, that does seem to make sense. But then again, you would think Pokemon would be on top of the list considering how insanely popular that got and how it brought anime into the public mainstream. I still can't see how a debacle like Cardcaptors got into this list. Did it even get that popular? I heard the uncut subtitles sold so much better than the dubs that the dubs were cancelled. Also, which Gundam series are they talking about?Dinozore brings up a good point: maybe they mean something along the lines of "best made for an American audience with such-and-such intended audience", in which case I could see their arguments; while not accurate translations of the original shows in the least, Sailormoon, and to a certain extent, Cardcaptors DO attempt to write semi-coherent storylines that effectively cater to their intended audiences. First off, I am happy to say that all of my favorite anime are on this list. Now to rant, in my opinion, Inuyasha was dubbed much much better than Sailor Moon or DragonBall Z.I say that in the respect that the Inuyasha dub keeps a lot closer to the original story line than Sailor Moon did and doesn't edit as much out as DragonBall Z did. The same goes for many of the other anime at the bottom of that list that should be closer to the top. But I believe Bob-san defined it right, that they were only chosen because they are more popular, not necessarily because they were dubbed better.
Come join the party.

I agree with AnimeGuru. The choices of dubs HAD to be taken out a hat or popped out at random. 99.9% of anime fans would never put CardCaptors in the top 25 for anything, let alone for tv anime dubs.
Animerica needs either better writers, or it needs to stop being a monthly commerical for Viz. One or the other.
