Who would YOU pick to dub Sailor Moon?

Post by Rainbow » Wed Jun 09, 2004 10:30 am

Okay, so a lot of fans are unhappy about the voice-acting work and the people picked for the parts on the English Sailor Moon dub. So who would you pick, if you were allowed to change things? This can involve switching roles of people who were already in the dub, or adding in completely new actors. Here's who I would pick/change:
-Switch Serena's Cloverway voice with Luna's voice.
-Switch Michelle and Molly's voices.

I can't think of any others at the moment. (yes, mine are even more OOC, but that's just me)

Not dub it at all.

now, with the real changes: seeing as this is have.... I could pick the company:
FUNi, they have a good reputation, and the only anime they've actually had trouble with was DBZ, and that was because they were under Saban's control, which is one of the worst things that could happen to an anime being dubbed.
-Adam Picard-
Blake? oh, like a coffee break!!
Poet? What is that? Is it tasty? Is it a popular new snack? Usagi, Stars 179

James: For some reason I'm seeing you in a nurse's uniform...
Steve: Thank you Jeff, that will be all. ... He's not here, is he? Oh God I've internalized him...

mmmmkay.

It's not that I think Cloverway did an overall terrible job. They did incredibly well in certain episodes, and some of the voices weren't bad at all. I think cloverway just should have cleaned up their act more, and slowed down with it instead of trying to rush it all.

I wouldn't pick a different company. I'd just pick a different time period. Any anime that comes from that period was slashed horribly. Were Sailor Moon to come out now, it would be done very well.

That would be a little weird, since the Wakko voice always struck me as being an imitation of the voices of the Beatles. But since Taiki's an extraterrestrial, he *could* have an accent I guess, and he is in a band, after all.

Now, if you're giving me the job, first thing I'm doing is firing the Molly voice. Molly doesn't really need a disctinctive voice actress, just someone who can talk like a young girl.

Then, let's see, I'd swtich the voices of Ikuko (did she ever get a dub name? I think I'd remember it if she did) and Luna. (I'm thinking of DIC voices here) It's ok if Serena's mom sounds like an old lady, not Luna. Then, let's see, I'm letting go the voices of Serena, Amy, and Mina. Actually, Mina's isn't too bad, so maybe she can stick around and do Molly. I'm thinking of bringing in Tress Macnielle to play Mina, try to give some life to the character. Amy's a tough one, but I'm thinking of Yeardley Smith, who's already famous as another brainy youngster, Lisa Simpson. And for Serena, I'm going to go out on a limb somewhat and hire Cree Summer (Susie from Rugrats, Elmyra from various WB cartoons). There's no way I'm going to get someone to match Mitsuishi Kotono's high voice which gave Usagi her distinctive ditziness, but Summer's rasp might take the character in a nice direction.

But the biggest one I want to deal with is Darien/Tuxedo Mask. His voice is way too high and young. He needs to be suave and manly. I might just switch him with Artemis's voice, but I want to hire a real actor for the part. Maybe Alec Baldwin would be good, or Viggo Mortensen.

I've just had a deliciously evil thought: let's replace Serena and Darien with Uma Thurman and David Carradine, respectively. ^_^

But whatever we do to the cast, it's still going to come out horrible if we're working with the same scripts. Parakiss, you make a good point about current anime being dubbed better. But if Sailor Moon and such had to be sacrificed to get enough interest to warrant such an attitude toward dubbing, if the SM dub made people realize how bad a dub could be done, then it's a noble fate after all.

I agree with Parakisu, if it was dubbed in a later period, it would've been much better. To keep ontopic and choose a company, I still stick with Funimation. Outside of DB/Z/GT, I have had no problems about Funimation's work and have always loved it. Right now, they are the best anime distributor imo which is why I was right in the beginning of the line for their A-kon panel. When Funimation picks up a series, I know it's in good hands, and with their good job in Fruits Basket, I know that they can do shoujo well too.

I like both of those choices! Lisa has often struck me as being rather similar to Ami, anyway. And Tress MacNielle does Dot Warner, who is similar to how I imagine a kid Minako to act. The "I'm cute" thing is like Minako's "Goddess of Love and Beauty" act, too.

:D You don't see the irony in having a member of the Three Lights have a Liverpool accent? Hell, I think Seiya, Yaten and Taiki should have Liverpool accents. Their next number one song could be "Kakyuu In The Sky With Olives".

For me, I'd have:
-Terri Hawkes do either Luna of Beryl's voice (if anyone's ever seen her other work, her natural voice sounds identical to the original voices.
-Sabrina Gredivch as Pluto for the S season (her preformance in R was amazing, but sucked in the movies, of course that was Nicole Thualt's fault).

Hmmm, I can't think of anyone else I'd change, maybe give Lita a more femine voice.

I agree as well, however, if certain changes were done to dub, like attack, characer names, and the music not being drowned within the background, it would've made a excellent dub.

Parakisu and Dan raise excellent points. Dubs are treated far better today than they were five years ago. The voices are becoming better, and less and less editing is being done.

I do wish they had just done a direct to DVD/Video dub for the seasons in the beginning, though, rather than doing so much editing to get it on tv.

Agreed. On that note, voice acting HAS come a long way from the '90s, and some companies are a little more competent in dubbing than others.

Had Pioneer/Geneon got the rights to dub Sailor Moon before DiC, the dub would have been far superior to the ones we have now.

Therefore, the company I would choose is Geneon/Pioneer for their splendid track record and their efficiency in dubbing anime. :)

I'm writing this Sailor Moon/Green Lantern crossover AU fic called "Emerald Sunrise". It's a hybrid of Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance, and Comedy. It's about Ami (Sailor Mercury) getting a new boyfriend who just happens to be a member of The Green Lantern Corps. I'm also throwing in some other characters from other animes and some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the late '60's early '70's. I'm also illustrating it as well. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

I'd pick either Geneon or FUNimation as the company, and either the Ocean Group or the FUNimation Studios for the voices. I think that either of the companies could pull off a good SailorStars (for DVD of course..) if Toei ever lets it get licensed (which is a pretty BIG if). I also think that either could pull off a fine re-dub of the first four seasons, too.

As for my random VA picks? Umm, this'll be hard, but..:

Usagi/Serena- Kelly Sheridan

Ami/Amy- Willow Johnson

Rei/Raye- Moneca Stori

Makoto/Lita- Enuka Okuma

Minako/Mina- Maggie Blue O' Hara

Chibiusa/Rini- Saffron Henderson

Yeah, that's all I could think of for the Inners, as for the Outers? Not so sure..All of the above picks are Ocean Group voices, since I can't think of any FUNimation picks for now..

Just one thing, though, IF there was to be a re-dub of Sailormoon, do you think it'd be better or worse (gasp!) than the original dub..?

It wasn't entirely Cloverway's fault. At the time CN was rerunning R, they wanted to air S and SuperS ASAP. That's why the dub was so poorly done. Cloverway was rushed by Cartoon Network, so esentially, it's Cartoon Network's fault that we ended up with such a crappy dub. It would have made more sense to let R finish rerunning before airing S, wouldn't it?

I don't think it was entirely CN's fault. The rushed-ness, yes, but I somehow doubt they can be blamed for the dialogue...

And I think Bang Zoom! or Animaze should've done the dub (Pioneer/Geneon seems to use them most, but I think Bandai's used one of them also). Between them, they're responsible for many of the dubs that people count as good... and most of my favorite VAs appear in their dubs as well.

#1 - FUNimation
They're one of the two companies seemingly willing to take on longer series like BSSM. (Unfortunately, the other is 4kids.)

#2 - ADV
I think the talent pool is a bit better than most of the competition.

The SailorStars characters can count, too, in a hypothetical sense. Here's who I would pick/change:
Quite honestly, I don't see the need to include a hypothetical stars dub, as that's just invitation to start randomly deciding what we'd want to do with it. It opens too much to personal opinions in terms of fandubbing and imaginary changes we'd like to personally see.

Let's just stick with the shows that have already been dubbed, as it is a moot point to say, "Oh, this company should dub Stars and these people should be the actors" and so forth, becuase there is such a slim, slim chance of Stars being licensed.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Well, I don't know much of the American voices, but I had a thought about this.

Say the series were entirely re-dubbed... say the company dubbing the series has a lot of money.

Do you imagine celebrities such as actors, singers, to do the voices (whatever English speaking country they come from ? )

:P

(and, as Tiff says, I don't even think of what has never been dubbed as of yet)

Is it that hard to come up with a list?

Sailor Moon : Tara Charendoff
Sailor Mercury : Annie Pots
Sailor Mars : Melissa Gilbert
Sailor Jupiter : Alicia Silverstone
Sailor Venus : Joanna Lumley
Small Lady : Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
Sailor Pluto : Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sailor Uranus : Johnny Galecki
Sailor Neptune : Jennifer Love Hewitt
Sailor Saturn : Neve Campbell
Tuxedo Mask : Leonardo DiCaprio
Luna : Oprah Winfrey
Artemis : Alan Thicke
Diana : Tracy Gold

10 points if you can figure out where I got that one.

(note: for those who don't know...

Tara Charendoff (Tara Strong) hardly ever gives up a chance to do a voice in an animated production
Johnny Galecki was Jason Bock in "The Opposite of Sex"
Joanna Lumley was in "James and the Giant Peach", "Sapphire and Steel" and "Ab Fab"
And Alan Thicke and Tracy Gold are from Growing Pains.)
