"Getting the shaft" basically means in this case getting the least airtime. What it generally means is payed attention to the least.

What I find odd, is how the Sailor Senshi with the weakest attacks (IMO, anyway), is the most popular in Japan, while a Sailor Senshi with powerful attacks, like Sailor Jupiter or Sailor Moon, seems to be more popular in America.

Please read ALL of the posts before replying. I said earlier:
"Ami is generally the favorite in Japan, becuase most Japanese girls can identify with her. She's studious, timid, quiet, and she fits in with the typical Japanese "female role"."
Also, someone else mentioneda bout how Ami's attacks are DEFENSIVE. They aren't meant for out and out attack, whereas Mars, Jupiter, etc have attacks that are offensive.

Yes Pluto and Saturn got the shaft more than anyone else in the anime. Even though Hotaru was focused on a lot in S, she hardly appears as Saturn. And we see her in very few Stars episodes. And Pluto was only in 30 something episodes. Yet she APPEARS in 3 seasons

Well, considering that at least one, possibly two, attacks of Saturn's destroy the world, I'm not surprised she never really uses them...

The lack of a transformation is just lazy, though.

Silent Wall dosen't destroy anything. Silent Wall is the 2nd of 2 defensive attacks in the series.

Saturn only has two "official" attacks in the anime. Silence Glaive Surprise and Silent Wall.

I know for Silence Glaive Surprise in the manga is just a powerful attack like Death Reborn Revolution and doesn't kill her or destroy the world. But in the anime
against Nehelenia, she said she would die when she was about to do Silence Glaive Surprise. but she didn't say it would destroy the world. It also wasn't too clear if SIlence Glaive Surprise itself would kill her. Or when she actually let the Glaive down. Because as she was about to drop the Glaive, Chibi Moon stopped her. Not when the explosion occured..
Actually, Saturn doesn't say anything to destroy the world. She merely has to swing her Glaive downwards in a certain way. Let's look at both her attacks that are said to do that:
Death Reborn Revolution: It's not shown in the anime. When she does it in the manga, though, all it does is hurt Pharoh 90. The apocalypse doesn't come until a bit later when she is shown with her Glaive pointing downwards.
Silence Glaive Surprise: Again, it's bringing down the Glaive that is deadly to her, not the spoken attack. If the spoken attack, Silence Glaive Surprise, was the problem, then Chibi Moon would've covered Saturn's mouth. I think the Senshi attacks don't work usually if they are either physically restrained or can't complete their attack phrase. A good example of this is in episode 184, Star Maker doesn't say the last word of her attack because she gets held down by a bunch of the Senshi. Thus, she can't do the attack, because it only works if she says the whole thing.

As much as I disagree with Mercury getting "the shaft", let us return to the topic.

Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

What you should be askeing how can her attack's be ice abd bubbles when Mercury is so near sun?
Well, actaully, mercury bubbles are weird yes, but being close to the sun has nothing to do with tthat. Mercury in the day time has a average temparature of 780 degrees F, where as at night, tempatures can drop to -300, or even lower. Her attack is based on the dark side of mercury (night) where it is taht cold. Venus is the hottest planet, incase u didnt know.

Actually I'm pretty sure that it comes from the Japanese name for Mercury. Doesn't it translate to "Water Star" or something? I remember reading that somewhere. In fact, I think its in one of the topics here. Senshi Attack Names, or something. I'll find it and link to it.

EDIT: Found it. Senshi Attack Names (I'm a link! Click me!)

And here's where Lady Flame Sniper explained it all.

Ami gets the most filler espisodes, aside from Usagi and Chibi-usa, and even has her OWN SUPER S SPECIAL. How is that getting the shaft? o_O;;

That's exactly what I was thinking! Seriously, other than Usagi and Chibiusa, I think Ami-chan got the most attention. (Does Ami-chan's First Love ring a bell?)

If anybody got shafted, it was Setsuna. They drew relatively unattractive clothes for her in civilian form (wasn't it only about two outfits total?), she hardly gets any airtime, she never got any image songs or singles, and she only got one attack. Her character could have been so much more interesting had they actually spent some time on her. ;_;

Hotaru was screwed over the whole henshin sequence thing, but she got an entire season focused around her character(s)! So I can't really say she got shafted either.

...Wait, Anthy can read my mind!! *covers head*

I would certainly agree. Maybe if Setsuna did more things I would like her more (maybe showed interesting home-life scenes?).

As for Ami, I think only her special was shown because she's the most popular in Japan where the show was created, so they wanted to showcase her more.

And finally, Miss Hotaru. I agree about her too, and she was also portrayed in such a way that (so far as I can tell from the Internet) she's at leasat one of the most popular Senshi amongst English-speaking fans. So they must've done something right with Hotaru on the show there. (I got that idea because on the Google directory, she has the most character shrines of anyone, and there been only a FEW times anyone's said anything bad about her, she's usually at least one people are neutral to).

I don't really think that anyone was shafted. I was happy with how everything turned out. I like Hotaru and Setsuna, but I'm not as disappointed about their lack of airtime as others are. The way I see it, they both were extreme characters. Sailor Saturn only appeared when the circumstances were so substantial that Sailor Moon shouldn't have the power to stop them. And Setsuna was more like a guide. She guarded time, so she couldn't just leave anytime she wanted to. I do think that Ami got more attention, but even so, we still don't know much about her. You'd think we would, considering that she gets the most of the Inner Senshi fillers. I mean, Rei's, Makoto's, and Minako's few episodes revealed more about them than Ami's did. So, I don't really think that anyone got shafted.

I completely agree. I really don't have any problems with how things turned out. Sure, it would have been cool for Hotaru to have a henshin, but as for the other things...I think Setsuna was MEANT to be mysteriuos and in the background, so it's kind of unnecessary to say she got "shafted" if that's her character. And as ParaKiss said...Minako's episode revealed a messload about her past and character, but Ami's fillers were mostly humor or about her gaining strength.
