Favorite mangas
What do you guys like so far, the old SM manga (english or Japanese), or the new reprinted version (Japanese)? What is your favorite moment from the manga?
I personally love the new covers compared to the old ones because the new covers are much more bright and simplistic. I also like how the logos on the new ones are raised slightly, giving it that 3D effect. My favorite moment has to be when Usagi sees off Mamoru at the airport in Stars. That's at least according to the Mixx manga. I don't have all the original mangas yet, but when I compared the mangas I do have, I've noticed that the last 10 pages or so of the Japanese manga became the first pages of the proceeding manga in english. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that scene was supposed to be in the SS Arc.
EDIT: I completely forgot to mention why I liked that airport scene. I really love that scene because it shows so much emotion. It shows just how much Usagi and Mamoru truly love each other. I don't really know why I like those type of scenes. I guess I'm just the emotional person.

I don't have any opinion on the new Japanese manga, since I've never seen them, but I do have a favorite manga moment. Actually, I have an entire STORY from the manga that's my favorite! The Ami's First Love Exam Battle! I think I may have mentioned why I like this one elsewhere though.

You can see both the new and old manga covers at www.come.to/mangastyleRainbow wrote:I don't have any opinion on the new Japanese manga, since I've never seen them, but I do have a favorite manga moment. Hmm, I prefer the new ones too, but not because of their looks necessarily! I like how each one (at least of the 6 I can see there) has a new Senshi for its cover. It's a great change from the SailorStars manga covers, which all had Usagi/Eternal Moon on them.

The new Japanese re-prints contain more pages than the original versions. While the series originally contained 18 volumes, the new versions will be published into 12 volumes.RoastedTwinkies wrote:I don't have all the original mangas yet, but when I compared the mangas I do have, I've noticed that the last 10 pages or so of the Japanese manga became the first pages of the proceeding manga in english. I love the new editions. I only have volume 4, and volumes 1-3 SHOULD be here soon. I plan on collecting all 12. I threw out all of my TokyoPop copies long ago, because I couldn't stand the shoddy quality. The pictures themselves were so grainy. The new versions retain the original quality and have new effects, and some new dialogue and terms. They are a VERY good deal considering their low price and high page-count. The stickers are also very cute, although I don't plan on taking them out.

I can get over how shitty the Mixx mangas are. I stopped collecting those ones long ago, though I haven't thrown them out. Volume one of the reprint mangas came in the mail today! I think the stickers are very cute too, and I don't plan on taking them out either.Jeff wrote:The new Japanese re-prints contain more pages than the original versions. WHere and how did you guys order the new Japanese volumes? are these reprints of the stories? And I agree on the quality of the Japanese versus the American translations, esp since I have 3 volumes of the original Japanese mangas and to compare them to my Mixx publications.

Takeuchi or Kodansha had the issues re-printed; some of the pages have new art, and chapters have slightly-altered titles to reflect different name spellings, as well as the use of "Guardian" instead of "Soldier". Further, the graphic novels have their chapters grouped differently so that there will be 12 GNs in the end, rather than 18. Most online Japanese bookstores carry them; I'd recommend Sasuga Books, but only if you can read Japanese ^^;;DurgaRea wrote:WHere and how did you guys order the new Japanese volumes? are these reprints of the stories?
Mixx did OK, in my opinion, the editors tended to let some little things get through, though, like name slip-ups (Alex Haruka), and a few spelling errors ^^;; One big thing was constant reference to American/US pop-culture; granted, they were covering up Japanese pop-culture, but I wish they would have handled it differently. And I agree on the quality of the Japanese versus the American translations, esp since I have 3 volumes of the original Japanese mangas and to compare them to my Mixx publications.

When did that happen, anyway? I remember hearing about that (and Hotaru being called Jenny or something) but I can't recall that from any of the English GNs...like name slip-ups (Alex Haruka)

It was only in the Smile magazines that SuperS was published in. When they released SuperS in graphic novel form, they fixed the names.Dinozore wrote:When did that happen, anyway? It would be nice if Tokyopop would re-release the Sailor Moon manga unflipped with a revised translation. I only bought a few of them mostly because I hated their crappy English release and I've never bought any of the Japanese manga because I don't know Japanese. The few volumes I have are one volume from the Black Moon Arc (forgot which volume it was though, it's the one where Chibi-usa becomes Black Lady in the manga) and I have volumes 16 and 18. I have a bunch of random single issues from the Death Busters arc as well.
The main thing I hated about the English version of the Sailor Moon manga is the use of the DiC dub names. I can't stand hearing (or in this case, reading) Chibi-usa being called "Rini" and Mamoru being called "Darien." Those names just seem to corny to me (no offense to anyone who's named that). They did call Usagi "Bunny" and although her name does translate to that and it's definetly better than "Serena", I still would've preffered Usagi.
I also hated the crappy binding as my copy of the last volume has fallen completley apart. ;.; I can't read it anymore and it's beyond repair. I loved that volume but I don't want to buy another copy that's just going to fall apart, too. If only they would re-release it unflipped....

They only carry the old editions though.
Hmm, that makes me rethink my slight preference for the new manga now, being a rabid Chibi-Usa-sama fan.
