About previews being cut out of the R1 Sailor Moon DVDs...

Post by Neo Dead Moon » Thu Feb 12, 2004 11:17 am

Am I the only one who DOESN'T CARE?! They only existed in the first place because Sailor Moon was originally shown once a week in Japan (and sometimes once a month in later seasons O_o), and the only reason they had previews was to tell people what would happen next week/2 weeks from now/3 weeks from now. I'ts not essential watching, yet everyone makes a big deal about them being gone.

Someone please explain to me the big deal behind the next episode previews being cut out of American released Sailor Moon.

I don't really think there was much of a point in pulling them. Look at the majority of anime released here, they had the same air schedule in Japan yet they still had their previews intact when crossing the ocean. I personally just find that a bit stupid.

As for people making a big deal of it, I would disagree. About halfway through the initial S release in 2001, people just generally accepted that the next episode previews were never going to come here. Of course it would still be mentioned whenever a new disc would be reeased, but nothing more than a few words by the first person who would mention the disc in posts at various places. It really hasn't been a big deal since the first couple S releases. The lack of those previews was really the only bad thing about Geneon's releases, and not too big of a deal.

Now, something that I don't think is a big enough deal is ADV's list of problems with their R1 SM releases. The next episode previews was an issue years ago and didn't last long, the ADV treatment is something I care a lot more about and think that fans should make a bigger deal about it too. You can bet that at A-kon, one of my goals is to hunt down ADV's David or Janice Williams, or Matt Greenfield, and get answers.

I've only seen the next episode previews for Sailor Stars because it's the only fansubs I've seen for the Sailor Moon tvseries, but from what I've seen, the next episode previews did have some cute jokes in them from time to time, so you miss out on some good humor. It's not really such a big deal, but I guess the diehard fans expceting a perfect release would be pretty pissed.

Well I know I definitely wouldn't care if i had those DVDs without the previews if it was my first time viewing the episodes. Because I was never crazy about anime previews when I was seeing an episode for the first time. They can kinda spoil what's going to happen. Especially Sailormoon's. I don't like the episode titles either. ^^;

eh, the previews don't make the show any more predictable than it already is, IMO. I think they're kind of cute, and sometimes downright hilarious. And while the titles DO give a lot away, they're not that different than most anime titles. DBZ's are even worse.

Answers? For what? You should blame Toei for most of the problems with the ADV releases. I think ADV did the best they could with what little Toei gave them.

I'm still confused as to why the lack of previews is such a big deal. Most of my anime DVDs only have one preview (the one coming after the episode), and no one ever seems to say anything about it...

I disagree, mainly because they spent at least 9 months on the release and did a crappy job. That much time spent on a product to have it come out as poor as it did is bad. And it's not only the masters issue, but anything else that was up to them they screwed up. Mix of dub and original terms in both the subs and booklets, both glitches, and the incorrect order for the pre-episode sequences, the audio/video quality is far from the only thing wrong with the sets. The issue with a/v quality is all up to speculation since ADV has been quiet about anything regarding the masters (except for the OP being stripped from each episode), that's something I'd like to find out about. But putting the masters issue aside, pretty much how the rest of the release was handled shows they spent maybe 9 days on Sailor Moon, not 9 months. If the boxes came out a few months after they announced getting the rights, I might've expected it and wouldn't be as hard on them, but with so much time and ADV spending that time who has put out mostly high-quality products (though they made a lot of lower-quality ones throughout 2003), I should expect better, especially for the price they're going for. I also would like to find out from them why they won't acknowledge the first season glitch, and force faithful buyers who bought the set first thing to spend more of their own money to send back the whole box instead of handling it like they handles the glitch in the second season set.

Well, that's the thing, the SM DVDs don't have that preview after each episode like the majority of anime DVDs do. It doesn't matter to much to me either, but they're fun to watch like with other anime. I guess the issue about those is that the next episode previews are basically expected so SM fans were a bit shocked to not see them. Over time we've learned that Toei doesn't give out the next episode previews of shows, as you can see with the DBZ DVDs, and people have just generally accepted that Toei anime won't have those previews over here and don't even consider the lack of them an issue with the discs anymore.

And Tiff, I won't make too big a scene, I promise. :wink:

That's because not many shows have that pre-episode preview like SM does. For most other anime, those don't even exist.

Well, why couldn't ADV just asked for the R2 masters? They were in top-notch quality. I'm aware that they didn't give a new restoration, just basically some fixed adjustments, but I'm sure it's better then the R1 release (even though I have no problems with the picture). Just exactly WHY would they use a master so old, but then again, it looks like they pratically didn't care for the SM release. I'm sure they viewed as quick way to make money, which explains the price, and with hundreds of fans wanting to see it uncut, you get a good amount $$$$. It just seems to me that because it wasn't their ''higher'' releases, they decided ''big deal'' about the quality. What's more embrassing is the fact audio from fansubs (VHS) is better!.

Yes, it's very depressing that fansubs several years old have better audio quality than commercial DVDs released by big-name companies such as Geneon and ADV. I'm used to the audio quality now, but I still wish it was better.

It kinda sucks not having them. They're part of the overall package of the show and help ya get into it even more. Besides they're released with pretty much every other anime in the US. Oh wells I'm still happy with the releases and whats done is done so no use fretting about it now.
