Sailor Moon The Perfect Collection Uncut Edition Season I

Post by jade_rainstorm » Tue Jan 06, 2004 10:28 pm

I bought this on ebay and had resigned myself to the fact that I would have to translate the whole season for my daughter (we are both big Sailor Moon fans :D ). I noticed that on one website it was listed as having an English language track. Since the discs do not have any menu selections except for scenes, I do not know how to access the English language version.

Here is the site that I am referencing. Can anyone help me with this?

Simple, this DVD collection was ripped from ADV's R1 release of the first season, and there is no English audio track. The people who run the site must've just assumed there was an English track instead of actually checking for one before putting that data up.

huh, I noticed on the inside cover it lists English under the audio section. But my DVD player only pulls up a Japanese track. Oh well. I guess it was too much to hope for. thanks.

You still got the ADV set for far less than you'd have paid for the real thing.

That is a (nicely-designed) bootleg. They just copied ADV's release of the first season and released with a new box and a cheaper price. Bootlegs are known to have some errors like that.

I really like the box! I have never seen an image like that before anywhere! I wonder where they got it? A calendar perhaps?

Just because it has good subtitles or has nice artwork for it's cover, still doesn't mean it's a legimate copy. I don't see your point here.

well... if it has good subtitles, shouldn't that mean that they should be abel to at least READ it in English???

As someone said earlier, the subtitles are just a copy of ADV's subtitles. So of course they're good. It is still considered a bootleg.

The quality should be the same as ADV since it's just a copy. I might suspect the video quality might suffer further because bootlegs tend to use three DVDs max so for series that require more than three DVDs, they downsize the video quality in order to fit more episodes on a disc.

umm...I may sound like a complete idiot, but what´s "bootleg"? I don´t think I have ever heard that word before.

I dunno. I was just looking at it and I suddenly got this urge to get inside. No, not just an urge - more than that. It was my destiny to be here; in the box. And then when I put it on, I suddenly got this feeling of inner peace. I can´t put it into words. I feel... safe. Like this is where I was meant to be. Like I´d found the key to true happiness.

You know how there's anime you buy at stores, like say, Suncoast? Or off anime sites, like ADV? Well, those are true, legitamate copies, or "commercial releases". "Bootlegs" are copies that people either: A) Rip and recopy to DVDs of their own and resell at insanely cheap prices, with reduced quality and unoffical setups, or B) Subtitle themselves from raw Japanese originals, greatly reducing the quality(most of the time), and selling for insanely cheap, usually this is done when the anime has yet to get an American release.

So in short, bootlegs = illegal unofficial copies. I'd dare not get bootlegs unless you're desparate to have the series and there's no commecial release(like say, Sailor Stars).

I didn't notice anybody saying this yet so I'll say it now.
On many DVD's there are subtitles that you can't access unless you use the button for subtitle selection on your remote. This may hold true for this perticular DVD. If the information for subtitles is IN the DVD then you're remote should be able to access them.
Nothing sucks like a Jed-kun - The "sloganize" web site.

You're correct, and that means they reduced the data rate to make the VOBs smaller, thus reducing quality greatly.

If that was even possible. Sorry, couldn't resist. ^^;;;;;

To actually add something though, if you read the review of it on the site, it even says it's a ripoff from the R1s. There's probably not too much quality lost though, ADV's discs appear to average around 2.5GB of free space on DVD9s (dual layered) so there's only really 2 gigs more than a single layer being used. With a bit over two hours of video and audio on each disc, the data rate doesn't need to be changed that much to give each disc's content to fit on it's own layer, easily cutting the amount of discs in half. Not to mention on discs 2 and 4 of this bootleg, there might not be any quality loss at all since discs 4 and 8 of ADV's set has trailers instead of a sixth episode, and taking out those trailers could free up enough space to adjust the data rate even less than with the other discs. Given the quality of the release ADV did, I don't see why they didn't just make their release four discs, at least that could've been used as an excuse for an otherwise shitty job. I've gotta give a hand to the bootleggers in this case though, they made best with what they had. Though I'm still suprised that no one has used the R2s as sources for making bootlegs or anything of the sort.
