So did ADV not understand English?

Post by HighC » Sat Apr 26, 2008 7:52 pm

In the ADV subs i noticed they screwed up subtitling when the character speak actual english.

In episode 34 Mamoru says Thank You in English but it's just subtitled as Thanks

In R they keep on subtitling Moon Princess Halation as Moon Princess Elimination even though Halation is an english word.

Whenever Chibi-Usa says Mama, Papa in english they subtitle it as Mommy,Daddy.

And I have no clue on how good they are at translating japenese but I did notice they leave out the pretty in Sailor Moon's speeches even though she say Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon.

They're probably closer to "dubtitles", meaning they just used the dub dialog as subs...if Chibiusa says "mommy and daddy" in the dub, then they just used that as the sub translation, rather than using the literal translation of mama and papa.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Sounds about right to me, Tiff. They probably also feel it's easier at times to shorten or change things slightly. Like with the Thanks thing.

This also doesn't surprise me much. Pioneer had issues keeping with the correct facts for the story in the subs for Supers and the manga had all kinds of messes when it was being translated. Nothing is going to be perfect. It's extremely sad when they can't just write the english as is, but this is the call they made. I'm just happy we have it.
