If I remember correctly, Luna actually felt bad for offending Usagi and thought something along the lines of, "Maybe I went too far?"Passions55 wrote:And later on in the same episode the scene where Luna give back the moon wand that usagi dropped (earlier in the episode) is really different in the sub than how its presented in the dub. In the Dub they make it seem like Luna berates Serena for being careless and even goes so far as to compare her unfavorably to the Sailor senshi, which gets Serena mad and she yell "why do you keep comparing me to them" and runs off, which leads to Luna making one of her all time bitchiest remarks ever: "Well...i thought for sure she was going to break down into tears. Perhaps she is finally acquiring a back bone." Seriously is it necessary to compare Serena all the time to other girls and make her feel like crap? Never have more than one kid Luna other wise you''ll be favoring one over the other and causing rivalries.
Which never happened in the sub. I don't remember exactly what happened in the original exchange but I don't think Luna even remarked on Usagi losing the wand and makes some casual comment that inadvertently sets Usagi off.
Characters Meaner in the Dub than in the Sub

In the original, yes. In the dub, she does just what Passions55 quoted.Dr. Casey wrote:

yeah actually I think she did apologies to Serena for her comments at the end of the episode, I just thought it was an injustice to have Luna say the things that she said in the first place when she never insulted her to begin with in the sub.Dr. Casey wrote: If I remember correctly, Luna actually felt bad for offending Usagi and thought something along the lines of, "Maybe I went too far?"
In the episode where Zoisite masquerades as Sailor Moon and Serena and the others go looking for the impost er there is a scene where Ray comments that the Sailor Moon that is stopping bad guys is the "real item" and the the Sailor Moon she knows (Serena) "can barely swing a hammock" and then Lita chimes in with "Yeah like for sure, she'd totally get tangled up like some poor bug in a spiders web"
What the hell? Why is Lita suddenly taking cheap shots at Serena when just a couple of episodes ago she was sticking up for Serena to Ray and Amy and saying she has guts? That just seemed so out of place that it was ridiculous, why did the writers feel the need to have Lita say that when she was defending Serena's character before? Its like the writers eighther can't keeps tract of who is on Serena's side when or they have this guide line to have characters insult Serena at every given opportunity. I have no idea how this scene played out in the original Japanese version since I never saw it subbed but I doubt Makoto was putting Usagi down. But even so the dub having Lita making a snarky remark like that seemed pretty random.

In the Japanese version, Makoto said that they wouldn't have as much problems as they do if the real Usagi was as dependable, but they seemed to be teasing Usagi more than flat-out insulting to me.Passions55 wrote:

I haven't seen most of the dub in a long time, nor do I really want to. But from what you guys are saying, it's disgusting how the writers made characters meaner than they actually are. They probably only did it because they wanted to be funny/witty. -_-;;
But now that I think about it, when I was younger and watched the dub, I always considered Raye and Serena as enemies and that they hated each other. When I read somewhere I think in the manga that they're actually best friends, I got so confused. I didn't see it at all. The only way it made sense to me was their conversation in the first episode of S about what they wanted to be when they grew up (or whatever else the conversation was about). That was the ONLY compassionate moment I remember seeing from the dub.
When I started watching the sub, it started to make so much more sense that they were best friends, especially the slap. They cut the actual slap in the dub, making Raye crying completely random and stupid. Their moment at the end of the classic Sailor Moon when Rei is about to die makes so much more sense. It also makes more sense that Usagi's best friend is the last to die instead of the person on the team she hates the most.
DiC totally ruined their relationship. They didn't do any of it right. Cloverway did a better job but other than that first episode I don't remember a whole lot else about their close friendship.

I hated how Cloverway made the comments that were a bit mean a hundred times worse. Especially with Minako who always says things that are a funny but also a tiny bit mean.
The prime example is in episode 127.
Usagi: The future is just a little further than Hokkaido, and it's closer than heaven. You can come back again anytime you want!
Minako: Usagi, have you ever gone to heaven?
Usagi: No...
Rei: Why do you need to correct her?
and then the English:
Serena: Oh, why the long face Rini? It's not like the end of the Earth. Wish you could be in two places at once? You know, the future is much closer than you think, and you can come back whenever you like to.
Mina: (In the bitchiest tone ever) WHO MADE YOU TIME TRAVEL EXPERT!?
Serena: *sighs*
Raye: *sighs* Stop dissing her so much, girl, you know you're being mean.
In that short dialogue I even managed to get in some of the unnecessary amount of talking and the stupid slang. -_-

Yup, totally agree here, SailorStarFire. When I first started watching the dub, I kept thinking to myself "Sheesh, are Serena and Raye even friends? They're constantly at each others' throats!" DiC really did screw up what was a really great friendship.SailorStarfire07 wrote:I haven't seen most of the dub in a long time, nor do I really want to. I always thought Rei came across as harsh in order to help Usagi be stronger, like how Rei is portrayed in PGSM. She would never be an out-and-out bitch just because she could, but she would try to help Usagi the best way she knew how. But I digress...
Getting back to the Serena bashing in the dub, I was reading this guest editorial over at Bunny's Tour page about the break-up of Mamoru/Darien and Usagi/Serena:
http://thetour.animehunters.com/sinusam ... e_010.html
and it makes perfect sense. (Please, no Mamoru/Darien bashing. That's not what I'm getting at.) In both versions, Mamoru/Darien tells Usagi/Serena that he doesn't love her their relationship is over, and it isn't anything she did. However, in a couple episodes of the dub between the break-up and the make-up, DiC implied that Serena was to blame for their breaking up. Remembering that (since I haven't watched SMR dubbed in ages), it makes me mad. It just seemed like DiC was taking yet another opportunity to make Serena look really bad by imsinuating that she did something to cause Darien to break up with her, even though he told her himself that she wasn't to blame.
(Sorry if that got confusing and rambly. It's late.

hehe dont worry princess the whole bash mamoru thing well at least animated mamoru was taken care of in the why is Mamoru considered a jerk thread. I agree the dubbed version took too many liberties in crossing over the characters. But if you think about the mentality of people back then seeing a blonde girl who tended to cry I guess DIC figured "hey lets make her a complete spaz who even her allies constantly harp on her abilities and insult her." And while this wasnt always neccesarrily the case for the undubbed original anime, to me the character conversions were till abit f'ed up. Im serious I just cannot stand seeing the way Rei is portrayed animated anymore. As much as I love the series in a whole it always amazed me how the Senshi's maturity was progressed so slowly or almost non existant when that was the entire point of the story. You mean to tell me that these young women who are basically in charge of taking care of their galaxies are always going to be boy chasing spazes or have to wait till a distant future to finally grow up and mature? I dunno about you but ive seen kids who have to take the initiative and help raise siblings that acted more mature then the alts of some of the sailors even up till the end of the stars season. And I thank my lucky stars (no pun intended) that none of the dub companies can get their hands on that final season to convert it into another mess.
"Have you been half asleep? And have youve heard voices?

Is this the sweet sound, that calls the young sailors?
The voice maybe one in the same.
Ive heard it too many times to ignore it,
its something that I sposed to be..
Someday we''''ll find it, the rainbow connection

Speaking of Minako...
Sub episode 127 A Growing Soldier! A Pure Heart is the Base for Growing Strong.
Ami: This is a program I made
Minako: Ami-chan, you're study conscious aren't you?
Dub episode 120 Tough Kindness.
Amy: I've made this computer program
Mina: How dorky, don't ya ever think about anything besides brain stuff?
If I said that to my friends they wouldn't talk to me for a week.
From the same episode, when Usagi and Rei are arguing over the backpack, the Dub insists on inserting the words 'Big mouth'. There's no need to put such insulting words in there.
