Fan Song Translations

Post by Sailor Sapphire » Mon Nov 24, 2003 4:59 pm

Has anyone ever tried to translate some of the japanese songs of SM into English?

I've done two: Fate is so Beautiful ("A Beautiful Mystery" is my title for it) and "Tuxedo Mirage" (or just simply "Mirage" as I titled it)

Let me know if you'd like to read them.

o_O; you make up your own words? Why on earth would you do that if they've already been translated?

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I just like making up my own interpretations of the actual words, and how they would sound in the English version had they used them in it.

If you like, I can show you my translation of "Tuxedo Mirage"

You mean like a fandub? Yes, I've done that once when Butterfly from Digimon in my attempt to create a fandub of it, but I never got around to actually finishing it.

You know how "Ai no Senshi' got translated into English, but "Tuxedo Mirage" didn't? What I'm doing is making up possible English words had songs like "Tuxedo Mirage had been translated.

Here's how i do it:

1. Get the rough english translation of the song
2. get a MIDI of the song
3. come up with English words that fit the song's mood or theme; based on or close to the rough translation

Ahh, I get it. Yes, I've done that many a time. With Sailor Moon songs, I've done Moonlight Densetsu (three times, and all of them suck), Heart Moving, Sailor Star Song, Rashiku Ikimasho... erm... I think that's it. I've also done it with CCS songs, Digimon Frontier songs, and a few others. There's no point to it, but it's kinda fun ^^

oooh. I see what you mean! Kinda like when CWI did "Aino Senshi" in the S Series. XD

I used to do that before I heard the actual song, when all I ever heard was the Midi.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

I did that to Moonlight Densetsu once, and it was really, really bad. I wanted it to rhyme, so it got pretty weird sometimes. Interesting. I wouldn't mind reading them, Sailor Sapphire.

I've tried, but the 3 I've done sucked ^^; I'm not good with words. But it's still pretty fun to do.

My online friend has done a few songs. She doesn't change much though, maybe just change a few words, add or drop a few words, and/or change the sentence around, so that the basic translation can still be sung to the melody while staying in tune and making sense.
She uses the actual song though, because some midis don't have the exact beat as the song(I can only think of Eien no Melody, the midi I have has a different ending)
::cries:: Its been forver!! And this place has changed... oh how I''ve missed it all ::hugs::

Here's my "Fate is so Beautiful" translation:

EDITED BY TIFF: Sapphire, you do NOT need TWO seperate posts, each with an adaptation of your song. PLEASE find a way to link these songs, or PM them to the people interested. It just takes up way too much space. If you want to just show one, that's fine, but please, no more than that. This goes for EVERYONE.

I've done a translation of the Pretty Guardian Sailormoon opening Kirari Sailor Dream, where I entered all the words to the Japanese lyrics in a Japanese-English dictionary. Here's my translation (I hope it's not too long or anything, if it is then please tell me and I'll edit my post)

The pupils in my eyes will forever be like jewels ... jewels...
My body is decorated with a lovely charm.
We should try to take a chance and go on with our lives.
Dreams wouldn't exist if it weren't for the strong individuals who have them.
Gan! Gan! I'm harassed by my rivals during the middle of the day,
but I still manage to get through it.
My lips, smile and skin are all beautiful but they can't compare to my love beam technique.
Experiences I have will change me as a person. Sailor Diamonds!
I will wake up at dawn as a completely different person because of all the encounters I have had.
The wishes and dreams I and the rest of the world have will all come true. Starlight Prayers!
0Let's all apply some make-up and take pride in our sparkling appearance.
Sailor Guardians they all are. Moonlight Miracle!

When you're changing the song lyrics to fit the music/writing new lyrics, that's not a translation... That's called an "adaptation."

Exactly *nods*

I don't understand why you guys even do this o_O; I guess I'm one of the few who has never done this. I always looked up the actual translation, and never felt the need to make up my own lyrics. I guess because music is so important to me, and to me, adapting a song with different words is like ruining a work of art.

Actually, the idea never occured to me, either. The only thing I've thought of is taking the tunes and giving them COMPLETELY different words so they fit my fic characters...and I never called those translations, they're almost like song parodies.

Hi, I'm new to the board! Michiru Mizuno-desu. Yoroshiku!

Since we're on the subject of fan SM song adaptions that NO ONE has read--I thought I'd get rid of some of your frustrations by cutting and pasting my adaptions into the post itself.

How absurdly simple!

I do it when I can't remember the Japanese lyrics and am feeling insane, but otherwise I actually prefer the original Japanese music and lyrics to a song over it's translation/transliteration.

Umm...wow. If there ever is a professional SailorStars dub in English, you should send that "Search For Your Love" thing to them.

MICHIRU MIZUNO:

I edited your post. Please, please read all of the posts in each topic before responding. I posted this earlier, and you should have seen it:

" PLEASE find a way to link these songs, or PM them to the people interested. It just takes up way too much space. If you want to just show one, that's fine, but please, no more than that. This goes for EVERYONE."

Please choose one and post it. Your songs were quite good, though ^_^
