Sailor Moon Manga HELP!

Post by Starry Eyes » Thu Feb 08, 2007 10:17 pm

Heey Guys!
Well i've watched all the sailor moon anime and I want to start reading the manga because i've heard that a lot of the stuff is different in the manga. So i've been hunting on ebay, amazon.com etc. Trying to find it. But i'm really confused. How does the manga work exactly? I know something about arcs.. but like i saw sailor moon vol. 8 they're already talking about haruka and michiru.. can somebody explain to me how this works and maybe the order of the manga so that I can purchase them in the correct order. I"ll need to get them in english.. are they good in english? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. i'm so confused and dont want to buy something crappy. Thanks :>:>

I am... totally confused by your post.

If' you're looking for the English language version all I can say is good luck finding any of it. It's been out-of-print for awhile, and if you couldn't find any of it at the places you mentioned, the odds of finding it elsewhere reputable is pretty much nil.

Arcs are how the manga's storylines are divided up, corresponds more or less with each season of the anime.

Order is easy, as they are numbered.

The translation quality... well... I'll let someone else handle that.

No no.. i found the places to buy it.. and they are in enlglish translations I was asking wat the order is... like how many volumes are in the first arc? 2 arc? etc. And are the english translations any good.. is it worth buying it or is the manga only good in the japanese language..

MixxZine/TokyoPop's translation isn't THAT bad. They use the English anime dub names for the first 5 senshi, Tuxedo Mask, and, if memory serves, some of the other important side characters, as well as for the "Weird Sisters" from the "R" anime arc. The dialog definitely has an air of "simplicity" around it, as many of the puns were changed to reflect American pop culture; furthermore, sometimes the editors let by slip a bunch of typos, and the translations at times can be a bit awkward. Nevertheless, it reads pretty well, and I can't think of any explicit censorship as far as art is concerned.

The first three arcs ("Dark Kingdom", Black Moon, and Infinity) are collected in 11 volumes (1-11); Sailor Moon Super S (Dream) has 4 volumes, and Sailor Moon Stars (umm...Stars ^^) has 3.

Thanks that helped a lot. Thats too bad that the english will be poor... I was reading websites about the manga and somethings are sooo different from the anime. I never knew that mamoru died right in front of usagi during pretty soldiers and that she pretended he hadn't. So I wanted to read the anime to get the fulll affect of what the manga was like. But thanks soo much the arcs and volumes make sense now.

I'd like to see them too, just to compare them to the originals.

Unless somebody already has done that.

ok apparently it's chix comics.. is this better then tokyopop translaton? Ive searched the internt but can't find any info.

Chix Comix (wow, they're cool) is the same translation as Tokyopop. The first volumes of the manga were printed under that label, which was a division of Mixx if I'm correct, which I may not be. Somehow the name eventually changed to Tokyopop.

In my purist fervor I tossed all my English Sailor Moon manga out. I would love the chance to read them all again but in my opinion, given the popularity of manga, we're very likely to see a re-release stateside at some point in the future.

Oh, and as a general rule, the earlier volumes' translations are worse than the later ones. The level of editing isn't anywhere near the dub though, and they are still very enjoyable and don't make any changes to the story. It's mostly annoying or awkward dialogue.

alright. Ya i thought it was weird cause the old first volume has the same cover art as the new one. (The green background with all the sailor scouts and usagi holding the wand). So this really is the first volume with just old cover art?

well I just received the first volume of the sailor moon manga (tokyopop) and have read almost all of it. It's not too bad. Although moon frisbee is pretty annoying. I have a question though, are all the drawings and such the same from the japanese manga? And are the storylines the sam but just in english or do they change a lot of stuff forthe english version?

It's Moon Frisbee in the original, too :P

Aside from flipping the art so that the stories can be read left-to-right, I don't think there's been any art edits, but don't quote me on that. The overall stories, I believe, are maintained, with only a few minor but insignificant details changed throughout.

Example (hidden for spoilers just in case):
In the SuperS arc, Usagi and ChibiUsa exchange ages; among other things, this causes ChibiUsa to look remarkably like she did when she was the Black Lady. Originally, when the Inner Senshi see her like this, they freak out and think she's changed back into her, whereas in the English version, because that story was published before the Black Lady story was, the girls make some comment about "OMG her hair is so hideous!". Kinda kills the joke, no? :P
haha I can't believe it actually is moon frisbee thats really funny. I thought that was just really bad translating lol. Ok, ya cause I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on a lot reading the english version of the manga. I know that the english isn't that great but apparently gets better as the volumes increase.
I'm not gonna read that spoiler cause i haven't read the supers yet, they are actually in the mail for me right now so i'll read it after i have read them.

That's good to know for me!

Where does the 35 issues of Sailor Moon English Manga fit in?

For example this lot on Ebay contains issues 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, 29, 31, and 32.

Here's the link:

Thanks!
