Wiseman -Most frighting Sailor Moon villian?
I am the only one who thinks that Wisman aka Death Phantom the main villian of the Black Moon Clan arc was scary? I mean just the way he looked was creepy, he was just this thing in cloak with these weird looking hands holding a crystal ball. Plus the fact that his face was always hidden behind his hood just makes all the more frighting because evil with it face hidden is much more more scary then evil show it's face in the open. And that creepy old man voice of his is just so full of haterd and malice, he sounds like the devil himself. Also out of all the SM villians, Wiseman is the most evil and sadistic. He has no love or goodness in him and wants only to kill all life in the universe which is a truly frighting goal.

You are right.
Also, death is often represented with a figure that resembles Wiseman.
His face was shown to us few times, it was a skull.

Wiseman was pretty freakin creepy, its a shame that the final battle with him was a bit poor. I wonder what he was though? A part of Nemesis?

That fits him even more in the manga because it shows him as a skeleton under the cloak. At least I think it does. I know it shows the skull more distinctly, though.Crecent beam wrote:You are right.

iirc, he WAS Nemesis, at least in the manga.DragonMasterZero wrote:Wiseman was pretty freakin creepy, its a shame that the final battle with him was a bit poor. I wonder what he was though? A part of Nemesis?

I found this somewhere on the web:
"In Greek mythology, Nemesis is the goddess of divine justice and vengeance. Her anger is directed toward human transgression of the natural..."
So that is an appropriate name for the planet and Wiseman since they wanted to take revenge on the humans because of what they had done to them.

Wiseman was scary. When I first saw him back when I watched the English dub he freaked me out especially when you see under his hood.
Is it just me, or does the R season tend to get looked over a lot by fans? I mean, it's not the first season, the outers aren't there yet, and it's not all flashy like the later seasons. It had a good story though and great villians. And it seems to be the only season where a man was the bad ass villian

I tend to dislike R alot because of the female villains in it (Not because their female but because I hate their characters) The Akayashi sisters and Esmeraude was even more annoying. Demande, Safir, Rubeus and Wiseman were all excellent tho

I agree with you about Sailor Moon R. It does tend to get overlooked by the fans. I think Sailor Moon R has a very great plotline and it's one of the seasons where we learn about Usagi's future and that she will be Neo-Queen Serenity in Crystal Tokyo. It may not have the Outer Senshi in it but it's not a season that should be overlooked in my opinion.Rin wrote:Wiseman was scary. If Sailor Moon R weren't drawn so crudely (hey, even Classic as better than that), and if it weren't for the alien arc (yes, I know why they did it), then I would love this season more.
And on topic: Wiseman is creepy, more so in the manga where his skeleton is shown. I remember I always freaked out when I was young ^^°

It could have been something good if it weren't for the art and animation. And it's still filler to me so that Takeuchi could keep up with her manga.
it wasn't very well thought out to me ^^° But I liked the senshi's new powers like the Supreme Thunder Dragon. Now THAT was cool ;D

wiseman didn't freak me out too much, though i just though he was a baka lol.
I mean in the anime when serena and rini are fighting him and showering him with the power of thesilver srystal he exclaims
"Nobody is as strong as the doom phantom!" and im like. what ever neo queen serenity and Small lady have just sorted you out so i think someone is stronger than you. (^_^')

It's my highly unpopular opinion that the Ail and An arc was far superior to the Black Moon arc. The characterisation of the Black Moon Clan was really flat - Rubeus, Esmeraude and the Phantom Sisters were pretty much one-note characters, while Saphir and Dimande received some development, but it felt like too little too late. Wiseman (should probably mention him, what with this being his topic and all) was possibly the only villain in Sailor Moon history to receive less characterisation in the anime than he got in the manga. The manga gave him a backstory, while in the anime he was just another evil superbeing.
On top of that, the Black Moon arc felt as if the series was taking itself too seriously. Sailor Moon has always been at its best when employing a degree of self-parody: the absurdity of many of the series' concepts is somehow less jarring when we know that the writers (and even the characters) acknowledge their absurdity too. There needs to be a balance between humour and drama... The S season was deadly-serious in parts but was also packed with comedy. There were attempts at humour here, but with the exception of the excellent Nurse Minako episode, they really just fell flat.
I think that people's dislike of Ail and An is, in many cases, based on a sort of snobbery, an attitude that says "Takeuchi didn't write this bit so it isn't legitimate". But if you can look past that, you have a story arc with a pair of reasonably complex villains, interesting designs, and very well-written episodes. The opening episode is astonishingly well-directed and touching, and brings me to another reason why I love this arc: while the manga moves on straight away from the end of the first season, barely acknowledging the events, the anime plays on them a little more. In the anime, the consequences are much more far-reaching, so we have a whole arc in which Mamoru has yet to regain his memory, Sailor Moon has to work to regain her power, and so on. It was nice to have that feeling of continuity there.
Overall, I feel that people are far too quick to dismiss this arc as filler, in much the same way that people dismiss SuperS, because it has a certain reputation attached to it. I used to express similar sentiments about this arc until I decided to give it a chance.
Oh yeah... and for me, the scariest villain in the series was, hands down, Zirconia. So there.

The Black Moon arc is my favorite, actually. I loved the whole concept of Nemesis and the Black Moon family. It showed the negative consequences of the Ginzuishou's power, other than Usagi biting the big one (which they reminded us of plenty of times, thank you). I'd absolutely love to see a short OAV series of the Black Moon arc, as I think it could kick serious amounts of ass if the story were trimmed up a bit. But this isn't a wish list... *sigh*
Anyway, I don't think that Wiseman is the most frightening major villain -- that award goes to Nehelenia -- but I do think he is the second creepiest.

Agreed. When I saw it for the first time in Japanese, I got all misty-eyed. It was one of the more striking deaths in Sailor Moon, in my opinion.Jeff wrote:I think when Safir is killed by the Wiseman is one of the saddest moments in the series.
Zirconia actually reminds me of Wiseman in a way. Both old. Both in need of a really strong moisturizer...the dooky wrote:Oh yeah... and for me, the scariest villain in the series was, hands down, Zirconia. So there.

the Ali and An arc is probably my favorite story arc in sailormoon.
The animation doesnt bother me at all really.
Anyway Wiseman is an awesome villian. He is just pure evil.

I love the Ail/Ann arc. I think the animation and drawings are at their best here (for example in ep. 50 it was great). The new attacks of the senshi are great.
It also has a nice, strange atmosphere, somewhat sad at times, and happy and humorous at the same time.

its too bad there wasn't more of wiseman, i though he was pretty damn cool. he was pure evil, not just misunderstood and upset like some of the other villians. but we don't see much of him until the end of R, and the battle could have had more to it. (this reminds me... i seriously need to rewatch R soon...)
