Sailor Moon R Arc (Makaiju--or The Doom Tree)

Post by SailorMoonFan » Fri Jul 14, 2006 10:58 pm

The first half of Sailor Moon R which is about the Makaiju or The Doom Tree isn't mentioned that much from Sailor Moon fans. The two enemies in this season were Ali & En. Did anyone like this season or not? And why? This isn't part of the manga.

In my opinion this is a good season (the first half). Even though it's very short the plotline is understandable and their is humor throughout. Also Usagi gets a new transformation (Moon Crystal Power, Makeup!) which is one of my favorite transformations and the henshin music is excellent.

And Ali & En are not from the "Negaforce" as the dub mentions. The dub made a mistake for saying that Ali & En are from the Negaforce and there is a scene in one of the episodes that is noticable.

I've mentioned it several times, but it's one of my favorite parts of the series. It's the only time in the anime that the enemies disguise themselves as humans likely to interact with the senshi on a regular basis--that is, schoolchildren. I didn't care for the En-Mamoru-Usagi-Ail love rectangle, but I did like how Ail and En kept experiencing culture shock. Conversely, when Usagi visits and discovers the "space biology" project, I liked the premise of the aliens having to hide their status from the humans. And when they came to their final end it was sad and bittersweet at the same time.

Also, En is hot in either her alien form or her Natsumi form. She can steal my energy any day.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

In Ep. 49 called "Who is the White Rose For? The Moonlight Knight Appears", in the dub (called "A Knight To Remember"), Usagi/Serena draws a couple of pictures of her as Princess Serenity & Prince Endymian in order to remind Mamoru of their past. In the midst of that she mentions Queen Beryl and An is standing right there when all of this is happening. Now in the dub, which is what I'm talking about, An/Allan & En/Ann both mention in the first episode of this season about the Negaforce and about Queen Beryl. Now when Serena is bringing up the Negaforce and Queen Beryl, Ann doesn't seem to be bothered or even notice anything at all. If she knows about Queen Beryl and the Negaforce why didn't she notice or say anything? Something that DIC probably didn't think about when they dubbed this episode or even this series as a whole. In the original Japanese series, there is no Negaforce.

That arc contained both Fire Soul Bird and Supreme Thunder Dragon, thus it was awesome.

Pity those moves were forgotten afterwards, though. You'd keep seeing them using the base moves later in the series, despite having stronger versions...
"Tell my tale to those who ask... tell it truthfully, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest... is silence..." last words of Dinobot, "Code of Hero"
"Is that a poisonous elephant in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" ~another forum
"Monster! I''''m going to collide with you indefinitely as my limbs flail wildly about!" ~NPC, Dragon Warrior VII
"I bet you were thinking how hot it would be to see Tsunade with her gates wide open, inviting you..." ~DuneMan
"To use gaming terms, Tyrannosaurus Rex was a camper--- and he pwned his prey!" ~BaronVonAwesome
"I prefer to beat my opponents the old-fashioned way: brutally!" ~Dinobot

I think there were some pretty well-done episodes in this part of the series, particularly the last two. It was strange/annoying that nobody took Usagi seriously and acted like she had some stupid crush on Mamoru that was of no importance or depth. That said, my favorite part of this story-arc was the dynamic between Usa-Mamo. They actually developed a friendship, as opposed to the first season. The Moonlight Knight and his speeches were also sweet.

The enemy... was a big tree.

It's not my favorite arc, but I don't mind it. Ail and En both get on my nerves a bit (especially En, good god), but it's a pretty good story.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Does anyone have any favorite Sailor Moon R episodes from the first arc (not the 2nd arc where the Sailor Soldiers deal with the Black Moon clan)? The Ali/En plot has only 13 episodes.

One of my favorites is Ep. 51 which is called "Renewed Transformation! Usagi's Power Up". This is the episode where Sailor Moon recieves a new henshin and new music within that henshin. Also this episode has Queen Serenity--this is I think the 2nd time that we see her apart from the episode in the 1st season where there are flashbacks into the Moon Kingdom & the Silver Millenium.

That would also be my favorite. It's very touching and sentimental. I adore the animation where she's in the pink portal-thing, naked and clinging to Luna. It's beautiful.

I first watched that episode in it's dubbed form and I liked it but when I saw it in it's original format with the original music I thought it was even BETTER. The original music makes that scene that you just described Tiff even more beautiful--I first heard that music in Sailor Stars when Sailor Moon defeats Queen Galaxia and she turns good again. DIC made a BIG mistake by taking out the original music. In the dub it was nice but music plays a huge role I think. In the dub version when Sailor Moon receives her 2nd transformation, the henshin music is STILL the same.

That is a good episode...I actually liked that one and the four that came after it in which all the Senshi got their power-up attacks. I thought Mercury's episode sucked though, the one with all the babies. The plot had nothing to do with her like Mars, Jupiter, and Venus's episodes did.

I loved episode 51. It was so funny when they were eating and Usagi is giving Rei a sandwich with hot mustard and she's like "FIIIRE...Soul", Usagi's laugh is just hilarious and the music that plays during that whole time is just so typical Sailor Moon, just great.
I think this is my favorite episode in R, it's funny and emotional, I feel sad everytime Rei screams "Usagi!".

I'm watching Ep. 51 right now and here is one of the most funniest bits of dialogue that Rei says before Usagi gives her a sandwich with hot mustard on it:

"Shut up! Go off and eat your ugly rice balls or something!"

I really liked the Ail and An series. I liked how they weren't really evil but needed to steal energy in order to survive. It has one of my favorite Minako episodes where she's with all those little kids. I thought it was a cute episode.

To bad Ail and An just left suddenly and we didn't really get to see then say good by to the senshi.

Oh, and I think the Moonlight Knight is cooler than Tuxedo Mask.

Nor my favorite arc, but it has its moments.

Ali and En trying to blend in with humans was great, full of laughs. Ali's relationship with Usagi almost seems like a prelude to Seiya.

Ali's personality was pretty dark, and probably the most disturbing of anyone in the anime. I think I remember him saying that he liked "to hear the screams of girls."

And the best part of this arc: seeing Mamoru and the Moonlight Knight standing side by side. Man, that threw me the **** off when I first saw it. Especially since it was almost a given that the Moonlight Knight and Mamoru were the same person (same eyes, same hair, same kunai-esque rose weapon, same VA).
The power of love conquers all...except a nuclear hypocenter.

Guess the "Quote of the moment:"

I loved it. xD And Eiru and En just plain rocked. And Eiru eating human food was funny... especially when he made that... horrible-looking mess for En. xD Supreme Thunder Dragon was so awesome. I wish it was used more then once. It was just WOW. The Tsukikage no Knight cracked me up, but his story was awfully sweet. ... Now I'm gonna go watch episode 59. So sad! I love 51 and 59 the best... and that one filler-y episode with the baby who Usagi thought was a girl. xDD And yes, the hot scene ROCKED. 'FAIYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! ... Soul...' And En translating the 'once upon a time, there was a pretty girl on the moon.' as... a bunch of jibberish, then saying she translated it to her planet's language. xDD

I really liked this arc too. It has the same sentimental feeling that the first series does. After the Ail and Ann episodes something just changed. It was still a great show, but it just didn't quite feel the same. I guess maybe it's because after this arc we don't see as much of Naru, Umino, Usagi's family as we used to. We never see Haruna after it at all. Very sad.

I think after the Ali & Ann arc, the show gets even better. The whole Black Moon Clan plotline is excellent! We see Naru & Umino a little bit in the second arc of SMR and in SMS and like once or twice in SMSS but in SM Stars we don't see them at all. In SM Stars, the Sailor Senshi are in high school and that's why we don't see Haruna. But you are right Usachan, Naru, Umino, Usagi's family and even Haruna doesn't appear a lot in the rest of the seasons. SM Classic was the season that featured them the most. H'm . . . I wonder if this is one of the reasons many find SM Classics their favorite season out of the rest?

It was a pretty fun series. My main problem with it are Ali and Ann's motives. Seriously, energy stealing...again?.

I know it was just a quick filler, but come on they couldn't think of something else they could've done? It was just a bit dumb to have yet another group of villians stealing energy. Aside from that, I enjoyed Ali and En. The new power-ups were also great, too bad they never show up again. (Although I think Venus used her attack in a Super S episode)

True, but I think that the energy stealing made more sense with Ail and An. They needed the energy to survive while the Dark Kingdom needed it to revive Queen Metalia. It also made them not really bad guys.

Although, one would wonder why they didn't just go somewhere else on Earth that was far away from the Sailor Senshi, or were they not able to?

The same goes with Galaxia, and most of the other villians too, some do have a special grudge against the senshi (Beryl, Nehelania, etc.) but most might as well go somewhere else. The only reason they don't is because it's a t.v. show, not real life, and if they went somewhere else there would be no more plot! :D

Edit:Nevermind where I mentioned Galaxia, Sailor Senshi have star seeds, but you get my point!
