Michiru's Answer

Post by Cardcaptor Takato » Thu Mar 30, 2006 9:56 am

In episode 92 of Sailor Moon S, "A beautiful boy? The secret of Tenoh Haruka!", Usagi and Minako ask Michiru if she's Haruka's lover and Usagi says to answer yes or no, so Michiru says "no." This answer has always confused me because I've always thought Haruka and Michiru were in love each other. So, why did Michiru tell Usagi and Minako that she wasn't Haruka's lover in this particular episode even though she actually is?

Maybe she thought that Usagi and Minako were chasing them, just to talk to Haruka? I'm thinking it was to pull their leg, a little, so they would keep chasing Haruka... But, I probably gave a dumb answer anyway. ^-^;

Your answer was correct, at the end of the episode they joke about how she wants a laugh. So she says no to makem chase some more.

on my subs, they ask if Michiru is her GIRLFRIEND. So I always figured Michiru said no becuase she's much more than that. She's not a girlfriend. she's a partner for life.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

My subs mentioned girlfriend too. But I always suppected she just enjoyed the chaos it caused.

However, Tiff makes an excellent point too.

Well... this isn't the only incident when Haruka and Michiru deny being a couple. The same thing happens in Episode 95, when they withdraw from the romance competition. But by Episode 110 (with the "I like your hands" scene) they are very much a couple.

It doesn't seem to be a common theory, but here's what I think:
Although they were clearly in love from the beginning, Haruka and Michiru didn't consider themselves a couple for quite a while. Haruka's speech in Episode 96, where she says she's prepared to abandon Michiru for the sake of the mission, might explain this: They didn't want to become romantically involved because it would divide their loyalties. The turning point appears to be Episode 106. Here we have Haruka reviewing how she met Michiru, and then at the end of the episode, we have Haruka fulfilling Michiru's wish to drive along the beach with her. This is the first real act of intimacy we see between them, and it's concluded with the statement "I'm not letting you go home tonight." I think this statement is way more important than it's often believed to be. Far from this merely being cheeky Haruka inviting Michiru for some more yuri shenanigans, I think this actually marks the beginning of their relationship proper. After this episode, we see them being much more intimate.

Just my own take on the situation. Any other thoughts?

I think Michiru is really a major league tease. Especially if involves flustering Haruka.

And in Stars (forget what episode), Michiru ask Seiya to help her out of her dress. Haruka immediately comes by, give Seiya a hand-crushing handshake, and sends him off. Michiru then asks Haruka to help her out of her dress. Exit scene.

Plus, in the SS movie, Neptune mentions there are things only adults can enjoy. Uranus promptly coughs into her fist after that line.

I agree 100% with the dooky. In fact I myself thought the same exact way in regards to their relationship and when it "started". They weren't a "couple" at the beginning (even though they did love and care for each other) but by the end of episode 106, they were. The line "I'm not letting you go home tonight" pretty much says it all.

Hitoshi Doi's Sailor Moon site says girlfriend in the episode sypnosis too, but the subbed version I have are DVD rips of the official subtitled version from Geneon and I never thought of it that way before, Dooky. It's an interesting theory but maybe another possible reason Michiru said they weren't lovers was because they wanted to avoid dealing with any homophobic strangers? From what I've heard, contrary to what anime would lead you to believe, the Japanese can be just as homophobic as Americans. Usagi and the other Inners do over-react a bit much when they think Makoto is going out with Haruka in that one S episode, after all. So, maybe they were lovers at this point but Michiru lied so they wouldn't have to deal with any prejudice from homophobics, especially from someone they just met?

I don't think the girls' reactions were exaggerated because they thought Makoto was infatuated with a woman. Those girls would bust a capillary over any kind of relationship within the group. Can you imagine their reaction if they actually saw Rei and Yuuichirou on a date? Or Urawa and Ami?

Even if they were freaking out over the fact that Makoto was possibly in love with a girl, it would be understandable. Makoto, up to that point, showed interest in guys. Frequently. In a group of squealing teenage girls, one of their boy crazy friends swooning over a female all of the sudden would be a little strange. ^^;
