Actually, in the anime it seems like none of the Witches 5 have powers. I always thought they were just portrayed as regular scientists.[/quote]
Personally I always liked the fusion of magic and technology, but I take issue with the opinion that none of the Witches 5 had magical powers. While I agree in the case of Eudial and Viluy, who both seemed to be pretty much exclusively scientists, I wouldn't say the same of the others. Saying that Mimete and Cyprine have no real powers because they use staves is like saying that Sailor Moon has no magical power: after all, all of her attacks use a particular object, be it the tiara, the Silver Crystal or one of her many wands. She needs her transformation brooch to transform.
Even if you do discount the staff-based powers, there's still a lot of other magic used by Mimete, Tellu and Cyprine. Mimete can transform instantly and make her staff appear out of thin air. Tellu can teleport and shoot vines from her hands. Cyprine can fly and orchestrate mass hypnosis. And don't forget that all of the Witches are involved in removing Pure Hearts, things that are, by nature, magical. Even Eudial and Viluy, ostensibly scientists, must have some magical knowledge in order to cause something that defies the laws of physics to materialise: Eudial made the Capture Gun, and Viluy programmed the nano robots. (In this case, Mimete is the exception, as she never removed Pure Hearts by herself)
It always seemed strange to me that we got to see so little of Tellu, Viluy and Cyprine, but it did mean we got to see a lot of Eudial and Mimete, both of whom are great characters, not to mention polar opposites. The fact that Eudial died in a very "human" way seemed appropriate somehow... evil activities aside, the Witches 5 could have been employees at any office/lab anywhere in the world: full of petty jealousies and resentment, and generally not doing much work.
Amazoness! Because men seldom make passes at girls who routinely kill men.
