Sailor Moon Seasons 1-2: ADV release vs TOEI's release

Post by Yamandakka » Tue Mar 14, 2006 4:31 am

Hi all,

Does anyone here own ADV version and TOEI's release of sailor moon seasons 1-2?

Is there drastic audio/video quality difference between ADV's (REGION-1 DVD) and TOEI's (REGION-2 DVD) release of sailor moon?

I bought SM season 1 and 2 ADV box set (~ 2-3 yrs ago) and i'm dissapointed with the audio quality. Video quality is tolerable and i notice ADV Films did ZERO remastering on their product. Is TOEI's version of Sailor Moon DVD the same as (crappy) ADV Films version in terms of audio and video department?

Not at all. Toei did an excellent job of remastering the video and audio. Toei always does an outstanding job with remastering their series (I own a few of their 70's show on DVD, and they look awesome!) They also retouched the LCD coverart for the release, and created limited boxes for each season. The only problem is bare bone extras, which aren't remastered.

n00b question

TOEI's SM release is strictly only in Japanese right? No English sub?

hmm I wonder when are we going to get REGION-1 TOEI dvd version... I think the only thing that TOEI has to do is change the description from Japanese to English, then keep the covert art and the logo title name of Sailor Moon orginal (in japanese) :D

I only own the ADV version, which I do have to agree with you, the audio is way too low!

I've never seen TOEI's version, is it on sale? Or is it only in japanese without any-subtitles? Like youre saying, that Toei did an excellent job, I feel like I should have bought that instead, but only if it has subtitles.

Yup, all in Japanese no subtitles. But do you really need subtitles to enjoy Sailor Moon? It's not a really complex series. Also, the DVDs are region 2. Which means you need a region-free DVD player, or be able to hack a region 1 DVD player.

Never.

EDIT:

Also, see this page.

Yes, if you enjoy the dialog that surrounds the story.

I honestly can't 'watch something in another language without knowing what's being said or what's going on. Sure, it's not a real complex story, but...I need more than happy noises and shiny pictures.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

True, but the dialog is pretty basic. I'm not all that fluent in Japanese, but it's easy to understand what's going on and some things said. But yeah, I see your point. Sailor Moon overall has some pretty witty humor in it that I miss whenever I watch it sub-less.

ADV's releases simply do not compare to Toei's. Something that's pretty obvious. However, we must remember that while ADV has faults in the releases, this does not exclude Toei. While Pioneer's releases were good, they weren't exactly hiqh quality, nevertheless, again, they were still good. Honestly, I bet you anything that even if they had ask Toei for the R2 DVD masters, that ADV would've gotten ''ROTFL''. And I'm sure they would've burst into tears if they asked for HQ masters of the R season, a season which at that time had no release in Japan what so ever.

ADV: Hi Toei, we came to ask you if you could give us some nice, good-quality masters four the first and second season. You could probably give us the R2 DVD masters for the first season and the LD masters for the second so we could remaster them. What do you think? Sounds like a good idea, huh?!!!!!

Toei: *rolling on the floor with laugher and busting their guts*

Heh, sorry, but seriously, the question is pretty obvious. I would love to buy at least ONE season, which I'm close too, but I'm slapped with a ''IT'S FOR GIRLS ONLY!'' by my parents.
