How do people react when they find out you watch BSSM?

Post by Guest » Mon Nov 21, 2005 4:33 pm

I've been a fan of the series since elementary school when it started showing on YTV and have recently decided to start collecting the DVDs.

I'm usually pretty quiet with most people about the fact that BSSM is my favorite TV show. The few people I've told usually don't say much but you can tell they've taken me down a peg on their respect scale.

I find that a lot of people think all those who watch anime/read manga are nerds and the ones that are into BSSM (especially males in my age range and up) are...well a lot of not no wonderful things.

My mother had the stragest reaction: I genuinely think it's made her afraid that I'm going to become a serial killer/rapist/child molestor.

I find it very frustrating to deal with other people on this topic and I am curious as to how others here have dealt with their various experiences.

Well, my parents are very supportive of my interest in Sailor Moon and anime in general. They'll watch it with me sometimes and I think they like it too to some degree. I'm not sure about other people though. There were these two girls who teased me about it in high school, but that doesn't really count since they teased me about things in general so Sailor Moon would be no different.

Hrm..people generally reacted as though I watched the dub, but then they would listen to my explanation about the original version. People were usually pretty cool about it. Sometimes I would hear things like "I don't watch cartoons *scoff*", but I didn't really give a damn.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't really give a damn either but sometimes I feel like my interest in BSSM is rather isolating, even more so.

eh. *shrugs* not too much... really teh only people that know I like BSSM already know I'm an uber-nerd anyways... so no major reaction. one thing that I do however, I don't hide my nerdiness. I flaunt it. XD

I don't really tell people anyway, I'm usually quiet during school, and there are more important things for kids to worry about, or me, than what kids think because I watch anime.

I've never really went around flaunting what exactly I watch, but I tell people anime. Some people look at me weird, others join the conversation. Although I did have fun showing my co-workers the Ushicon photos I took. Lots of laughs, but I had a great time. ^__^

Family: Most don't know about it, mainly because I keep it to myself in general, and even when I was really into anime, I never went into "otaku mode" at home. Nonetheless, my mom liked Sailor Moon a bit, and even flipped through my artbook once. She also liked Mercury's haircut and wanted to get her hair styled like that at one point.

Friends: My elementary school pals were down with it, and one of them even pointed me in the direction of more info about the original series. I knew a few people who liked anime in high-school, but for the most part, I again kept my interest pretty low-key. In college, though, I really let my "otaku-ness" go nuts; I'd discovered Anime Club and became friends with someone who was also a huge fan. My floormates in our dorm knew how much I liked anime in general, and Sailormoon in particular - I had a poster and wallscroll up on my wall, and my computer desktop was almost always an SM image - but I was never bugged about it in the least.

My parents encouraged me and even watched Sailor Moon with me. XD I can't remember how they took it at first, though. But I know for sure that they weren't against it.
My friends are also anime/manga fans, so they didn't have a problem with it either, when they first heard that I love Sailor Moon. Yes, I even managed to turn them into "moonies"! Lol!

It seems like I get at least three different reactions from the people I tell.

One reaction is that the other person would say they've heard of Sailor Moon, and they liked it,

Another reaction is they've never heard of Sailor Moon at all,

And another reaction is "*scoff* YER STOOPID!" -_- Yeah, whatever. lol.

My family knows I'm a Sailor Moon addict. XD So, There's no shock around here.

I don't tell people I'm into anime in general. I usually get a blank stare. Then people automatically think of things like YuGioh and Pokemon.

When I have told other anime fans that I'm into Sailormoon I get one of two reactions. "I don't like it, but that's cool" and "Ahhhh Sailormoon. :D I remember that show". But most of the people I do talk to about anime really just talks about the mainstream Adult Swim anime. Usually nothing as old as Sailor Moon.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

 I'm sorry, but that was just too funny.

I usually got that same reaction whenever I'd just draw anything in general, because I typically draw in that anime style.

Anyway, I remember I was talking with my friend in 7th grade (I went to a school full of kids back then who CONSTANTLY made fun of anime... Sailor Moon in particular -_-), and I told her I liked Sailor Moon. But for some reason, she suddenly decided to yell out "OH, YOU WATCH SAILOR MOOn?!!" as loud as humanly possible. I didn't stop getting picked on about it until I moved from that friggin' school district. Kids can be little bastards at time, ne?

My family knows I like anime and that Sailor Moon is one of them, but they don't know much about it other than it's Japanese animation. However, for the most part, they don't make a big deal about it. They just treat it like any other regular interest. But when I start watching subbed anime around them, that's when they start acting all xenophobic and making fun of the Japanese language, so now I only watch dubs when they're around me and keep the subs in the privacy of my room. >< I told my best friend that I liked Sailor Moon way back when we were in middle school. I was really nervous about telling her because I didn't want to be made fun of for liking a "girly cartoon" and this was back before anime was still pretty unknown and way before Pokemon ever came along, but when I told her I found out that she liked anime and Sailor Moon too, and thought it was cool that I liked it as well. All of my online friends know I like anime too, and they also know I like Sailor Moon. Most of them either have fond memories of watching the show when it was still on TV or they're still big fans of the Japanese version now. I think only one person on the Internet has ever made fun of me for liking Sailor Moon, but he was a 12 year old kid that was obessesed with DBZ, so go figure. For people outside my family and circle of friends, I mostly keep my interests in general to myself mainly because I don't like being criticized for something I like. In the few cases I have told people about my interests, I usually mention I like anime in general rather than mention any specific series. Most people either didn't know what it was that I was talking about and thought I was some weird dork, thought it was all like Pokemon and made fun of me for liking it, or thought it was all like porn and made fun of me for liking it. But nowadays I just keep all of my interests to myself to avoid being made fun of.

My family knows I've liked it since high school and I still love it today. And though they encourage me to draw and make it a career, they won't actually watch it with me. And sometimes my love for anime in gerneral gets made fun of. "Oh yeah, Tiff likes that those Chinese cartoons!" e.o it's... japanese for the last freakin' time!!

Friends... well.. I have none that'll watch anime. And if I met a non-anime liking person I get the same reaction you guys do. "Oh, I don't watch cartoons it's for kids... oh you mean like that Pokemon thing?!" =_=+

It's strange, becuase sometimes I'll find out that someone else likes Sailor Moon/anime, and I had no idea beforehand, becuase they kept it to themselves like I did.

I remember in my senior year of high school, I finally said "Fuck it" and didn't care if people knew...so I would outwardly draw in the middle of class and stuff...and one of my close friends saw what that I was drawing sailor moon, and went "OH! USAGI!"

We both realized we both loved the show (only she had only seen the dub, but wanted to see the original, so I hooked her up with the movies), and that a third friend of ours like it as well. So we would sit in choir and talk about Sailor Moon, and draw XD

-_- we even had names for ourselves. She was Rei, I was Usagi.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

LMAO!! When my step sisters came to live with us about a few months after I started watching SM, we'd pretend to be the senshi too! I was Usagi, the oldest was Mako, her sister was Rei, and my little sister was Ami. We couldn't find a Mina T_T

My whole family knows i like sailor moon and even my big brother is a huge sailor moon fan and we see it together. Also my sister will see the show sometimes with me and than sometimes she will make fun of me and tell me that the show is only for girls and i hate when people say that! :x

When I was really young, I was a huge fan of Sailor Moon and everybody knew it. I wore a Sailor Moon shirt to school. And for show-and-tell, I talked about my shirt and who everybody on it was. I was pretty proud because Neptune and Uranus was on the shirt when the American dub didn't have them yet. But in middle school, people noticed me for my drawing and they often asked me this because I draw Sailor Moon:

Them: You watch Sailor Moon? *small smile*
Me: Ya...
Them: ... *silent but still smiling*
Me: ...

I grew out of Sailor Moon months ago so when I look back, it is kind of embarassing.

I've gone through several stages. At first I didn't talk about liking it. Then when I started watching my subs of Stars then i got into Otaku mode. Picked up various items and watched as much of the show as possible. Even drew the characters and made my own fan fic stuff. Annoyed my family some, but they were fairly supportive. Then after a few years, I went back to liking it, but just not discussing it much.

Some of my friends love the series too, so they're very accepting. In fact, I made one friend in college over that and met my boyfriend because of it too. (his nickname for me is Usako. He's my Mamo-chan) Most of my other friends either don't know or don't care. For the most part I hardly ever get the "you are such a loser" stare from people when they find out. Although, I wouldn't care even if they did. My viewing preferences are entirely my business, not theirs.

They were always really suprised .Most people wouldn't guess I liked anime or games in a million years. I don't go around telling people I like it. A lot of people are also confused since SM is a kid's show.
