Senshi Attack Names...Where are the Planets?

Post by Rainbow » Sun Nov 02, 2003 9:51 pm

Here's something interesting I noticed about the anime:
Sailor Moon: Attacks ALL have "moon" somewhere in the name, even if it's part of the bigger word "Honeymoon."
Sailors Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter: Attacks don't get planets mentioned in them until their Super form attacks.
Sailor Venus: Her first season attack doesn't have "Venus" in it, but in R and S she gets "VENUS Love-Me Chain," an extra planet-name attack.
Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto: None of their attacks have their planets mentioned.
Sailor Saturn: Actually, her attacks DO have an odd pattern...they're named after her weapon (except for Death Reborn Revolution, which isn't mentioned in the anime anyway).
Chibi Moon: Unlike her mother's attacks, NONE of hers have "Moon" in them except for her double attack with Super Sailor Moon in the SuperS movie.
Starlights: They somewhat have their Senshi titles in their attacks, which all start with "Star" and their adjectives are related to their titles too:
Fighter=lasers are associated with warfare, especially alien warfare
Healer=fire has been associated with some healing properties
Maker=duh, where are babies created?!

So what's with the Outers and Chibi Moon having no planets in their attack names? And how come Venus gets an extra "Venus" attack?

One theory I heard was that adding the planet name added more power, which doesn't make sense because then why do the Senshi often not use the planet names? Are they trying to hold back their power? There are only a few times when a Senshi purposely weakens their attack:
1) Sailor Moon stops her tiara from hitting Naru, who's protecting Nephrite.
2) Maker tones down Star Gentle Uterus so it doesn't kill Amanogawa/Sailor Teacher in episode 177.

And in both cases, the "toned-down" attack was used by a Senshi I mentioned uses at least part of their title in their attack (well, only somewhat for Maker, but wouldn't that mean she'd cut off the "Star" part then to soften it?).

o_O my theory is that you're looking a little too much into it, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I added the extra part because I asked a similar question on the old forum, got that confusing answer, then I think the forum closed before I could get it straightened out.

Well in the manga the inners get attacks with their names in it

Mercury Aqua Mirage (also in SuperS special)
Mars Snake Fire
Jupiter Coconut Cyclone
Venus Wink Chain Sword

Also manga Chibi Moon has Moon Princess Halation, Moon Gorgeous Meditation, and Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss

But yes I noticed not many of the senshi besides Moon have their planets names in their attacks. It's funny since the dub insists on adding the planet names to most attacks.

Ah yes, the traditional DiC attack formula:
Planet + Noun that applies to Senshi's element/energy source + Action Verb that makes absolutely no sense = DiC attack name.

Observe:
VENUS...STARBURST...EXPLOSION!!!

I dunno. Most of the Japanese attacks don't make much more sense than the dub ones to me. I mean, what is Jupiter evolving, anyway?

"Evolution"? I always thought it was "Jupiter Oak REvolution"...whoops ^^;;

Speaking of misinterpretations, I always thought Venus' first attack was "Crescendo" Beam (saw the original first ^^;; ). Didn't make much sense since there was little, if any, musical juxtaposition with the attack...

But yeah, Rainbow, I think it was just a name change for the sake of consistency. I wouldn't look too far into this little matter ^^;;

I'm mostly talking about the abscence of planet name attacks for the Outers (which is true in the manga) and the fact that Venus gets an extra "Venus" attack. Also, I wasn't talking about the manga in the first place because I know it has those exceptions.

I think it's one of my traits to overanalyze ideas too much. (I have trouble analyzing my own feelings, though...I'm more comfortable in my brain than my heart sometimes, which is why I get too upset sometimes, maybe if I was more in tune with my feelings, I could control my temper more?)

I think the original names sound more elegant to me.

well, my main point was that they felt the need to change EVERYTHING and just make it more nonsensical than it already was.

Yes it is. As I have said MANY times in my Sailor Moon fan life, I don't care how "gross" you think the word uterus is, it fits the pattern I noticed with the Starlights' attack names. Talk to Naoko Takeuchi if you have a problem with "Star Gentle Uterus," not me. She made it up; I merely praised the fact that she made it up.

I agree with Tiff and you have to admit stuff like Mars Flame Sniper sounds better than Mars Flame Shooter :wink:

I dunno.. Um is she evolving oak? o_O

Well I know Naoko's English isn't the best. Even a couple of the songs she wrote for BSSM have "Engrish" lyrics. From Ai no Megami no How to Love "It's not only you who ARE so excited". I find it funny though. :lol:

I'm forced to believe Naoko had the names in Japanese and then attempted to translate them into English even if that's not what she did. :p

I like the original attack names a lot better, I mean even before I knew about the original Sailormoon, I thought "Mercury Bubbles..BLAAAAST!" was just plain retarded. And don't get me started on "Maaars Fiiire..IGNITE!" and "VENUS! CRESCENT BEAM! SMASH!". Some people I know think the original attack names are retarded and go "ewww" at "Star Gentle Uterus" and just about any of the original attacks. And the planet-noun-verb rule doesn't just apply to Dic. Anyone remember "Venus Love Chain!" "Venus Love Chain WHIP!" "Venus Love Chain HARNESS!" and in one episode just plain "VEEEENNUUUSS!" from CWI's dub. Poor Minako-chan, can't she remember her own attack name?

LMFAO. God, that's hilarious.
And let's not forget "Mars Celestial Fire Surround."
There's nothing Celestial about it..and she's not surrounding anything.

What exactly is Sailor Moon's element? I think the reason that all of Sailor Moon's attacks have Moon in them because while the other attacks usually have a word associated with their element, the Moon is here "element" so to speak.

I tried coming up with the Laws of Sailor Moon once, and on the law adressing attacks there would be a corollary "If you forget your attack name, you can just make one up by taking the name of your planet, a word associated with your element and some random word, and it will probably work." I think this is how Moon Tiara Stardust worked.

I'd say Sailor Moon's element is light...
