Parts of the dub that was better then the original

Post by Stitch » Wed May 18, 2005 4:54 pm

I always perfered the transformation music in the dub more then the one in the Japanese version. It just sounds so much more...pretty and light then the Japanese version. Not only was the music good, but it was timed so perfectily to the video footage, especially in the part right Usagi is about to do her "sailor salute" pose.

A lot of people have said that the English music was hokey, but I disagree. Hey, in the Japanese version you could hear people singing "Saaailor Moon" in the background. If that isn't hokey, then I don't know what is.

Personally, I found a good number of voices to be superior in the DiC dub when compared to their Japanese counterparts (haven't seen the Cloverway version, so I cannot comment on that). Just a short list:

Rei
Minako
Mamoru
Beryl
Kunzite
Rubeus

not to mention a few supporting characters that also did well.

Specifically, I feel a few performances outshined their Japanese counterparts:

1. Nephrite's death. I don't know what it was about the English version, but the scene between Neflyte and Molly (to distinguish from the Japanese version) was executed SO WELL, and, in my opinion, with much better emotion and acting than in the Japanese version.

2. Zoycite (or however his name is spelled in the English version). Yes, he was made a girl over here, but her new voice actor did an amazing job in turning Zoisite into a royal bitch...and that, IMO, is just what that character needed. While not necessarily traitorous, Zoisite just didn't seem to have what it took to be a sassy, smart-ass; Zoycite, however, was someone you could truly love to hate, and whose personality made the perfect character for double-crossing and insubordination. Kudos to DiC for this move.

Chibiusa's Cloverway dub voice. While her DIC voice was the worst, even Kae didn't actually convey what the character was: a total innocent, who could make blunt observations out of sheer naivete. In the Japanese, she came off as someone who knew what she was talking about when she was insulting Usagi.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

That was one of the first episodes of Sailor Moon I ever saw, and I think it was that heart-wrenching scene that really turned me on to the series. Too bad the rest of the dub couldn't have been executed in the same manner.

It's been a lot of years since I've watched dubbed Sailor Moon, but I think Zoycite's VA did a good job. But to me, it's the whole principle of giving him a sex-change due to American intolerance to homosexuality that fires me up. And the original Zoisite did a fine job, IMO.

All in all, most of the voice actors didn't bother me so much as the script that was placed in front of them. VAs did fine as long as they talked in a normal speaking voice. It's when they give us some kind of fake-sounding 'character voice' that I have problems.

There are only three things that I liked better in the dub than in the sub. Serena's transformation BGM from the first episode of the dub, Rini's second VA, and that joke about Nephlyte poising Sailor Moon's lemonade, but that's about it.

Haha. I loved that line.

Well I did like Tiger's Eye's 'Un, Duex, Trois' from The Perfect Couple. I also liked the whole 'poorly dubbed' beginning scene of Cutting it Close.

I also thought the cake scene with Esmeraude was so much funnier in the dub. I mainly loved the part where Mako-chan knocked into Esmeraude, and then she gave this nasty growl.

"They tricked me with that wonderful thing they call cake!"

Some of the English music is much better. I still think the Japanese transformation music is cheesy as hell, and some of the English vocal songs are leagues above their Japanese counterparts...
"Tell my tale to those who ask... tell it truthfully, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest... is silence..." last words of Dinobot, "Code of Hero"
"Is that a poisonous elephant in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" ~another forum
"Monster! I''''m going to collide with you indefinitely as my limbs flail wildly about!" ~NPC, Dragon Warrior VII
"I bet you were thinking how hot it would be to see Tsunade with her gates wide open, inviting you..." ~DuneMan
"To use gaming terms, Tyrannosaurus Rex was a camper--- and he pwned his prey!" ~BaronVonAwesome
"I prefer to beat my opponents the old-fashioned way: brutally!" ~Dinobot

I liked Usagi's henshin BGM better in the first Amercian dub season of SM than the original. I liked the inner senshi's henshin music better in the dub as well. I thought that the first girl to do Usagi's voice in the dub wasnt bad at all. After her, the other actresses were aweful. I liked Makoto's dub actress as well. I like alot of the dub music, "My Only Love" and "Rainy Day Man" are among my favorites.

I for one, I loved the henshin music in the Japanese version. It was cheesy, peppy, and it fit real well with the show. Reminds me of Cutie Honey's groovin' henshin music from the 70's..

Yeah, I'm amazed at how many people here don't like the Japanese henshin and attack music. I've always loved it. It's upbeat, peppy, and just plain cheerful. I find myself humming it all the time. And I love the chanting of the senshi's names. "Sera-MAHS! Sera-MAHS!"

Hrm...I think that the dub did a really decent job with the emotion in Usagi's battle against Metallia in the first season. While I still like the way the Japanese version handled it, I think the dub kept the all-around mood of it, and their music choice was a good one. I don't particularily care for the WORDS of "Carry On", but the beat and such portray good battle music. In fact, most of the major battles were done well in the dub, IMO.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Exactly. I would have actually liked Carry On better than Moonlight Densetsu for that scene, had it not been for the lyrics. In fact, when I first heard Carry On (I downloaded it before I saw it in an episode) the first part of it had me all joyful. I was all "WOO guitar!" ...then the lyrics kicked in.

*Nods Exactly. The lyrics were just STUPID. We didn't have to have the whole battle narrated for us in the song, in the stupidest manner possible (The evil queen we will defeat!!)

I didnt say what i wanted to say clearly. I meant that I like the first season and second season of BSSM's music in the dub better than the original. I liked the first season's music but the second was extremely generic to me. Super, SuperS and Stars are the soundtracks that I love. (SuperS being my favorite). I love the Henshin music in Super. Just the dub was better in the first two seasons to me is all lol

Carry On in place of Moonlight Densetsu for the last battle in the 1st season is the first thing that comes to mind. Oh that sarcastic remark about Nephlite poisoning Sailor Moon with lemonade was nice.

I always thought Mercury Bubbles Blast was better sounding than Shabon Spray. It's still corny but what's worse, saying you're gonna blast somene with bubbles or saying "Soap Bubble Spray" as an attack? And... yeah I'm struggling to come up with others.

I thought Carry On was far better than Moonlight Densetsu in the final battle with Beryl (though the lyrics needed work). Moonlight Densetsu makes a good OP, but a lousy battle song...

Not only was it cheerful, it represented the senshi individually. That is, unless they were transforming in a group, or watching the Outer or Starlight's sailor henshin. Talking about the inners, the music was different for each senshi, and had the people chanting in the backround. Plus I prefer it when the body lines aren't blurred out. It just doesn't feel as.... I don't know, real. Plus, when the music is different for the senshi, it shows that their different, and not all the same. (Does that make any sense??)

Talking about the Outers and Starlights, their music is the same, but that's mostly because they're transforming in a group or couple.

In the SMS movie, the Outer senshi's elegance just wasn't there when they were transforming. They seemed like another group of transforming valley girls to me. The same feeling of grace and elegance when they transform is in the music.

The Starlights haven't, and may not be, dubbed into American TV or VSH/DVD, so their music is just fine. I like how they have techno/pop-rock kind of music when they transform, since their band members in real life.

Oh well, music rant off.

Another thing I forgot about the dub that I prefered over the original....the names of the Black Moon clan. Normally, I despise name changes of any kind, but I actually prefer the DiC dub names for the Black Moon clan over the Japanese names. I don't know why....I guess the whole mineral theme makes more sense to me, especially since the season one villians were named after minerals. And "Avery" is a nicer-sounding name to me than "Kadabras."
