Question about the season One DVDs

Post by Nippercat » Wed Apr 27, 2005 6:14 am

Hi! I'm a newbie here but I'm hoping that some of you kind folks can help me with this question...

I just purchased the 4 disc DVD collection of Season One, but I can't seem to find out where/how to turn on the English subtitles. The episode titles on the menu are in English, but when I play them, they're all in Japanese. Are there subtitles for these discs, and if so, how do I turn them on?

If anyone has an info, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,

Are the discs the ADV version or another, bootleg set? As far as I recall, the ADV discs already have the Japanese subtitles on by default. I can check later on when I get home to let you know how to turn them on if they do go off for some reason.

Also, per the rules of this site, you need to enter your birthday into your personal profile.

What you most likely have bought was a bootleg since ADV's DVDs have the subtitles already turned on, like what Starscream said. If your copy is a bootleg of the ADV DVDs, then you won't find a set-up menu on the discs, since the official version didn't have one either, but your DVD player's remote control should have a button that says "subtitles" on it (at least mine does, anyway), so you can try turning on the subtitles with that button if it has it.

They're boots, the real one (both U.S. and Japan) is 8 discs. Can't help you beyond telling you to fiddle with the remote.

Actually, most Hong Kong bootlegs have both Chinese and English subtitles.

Yeah, does anyone mind if I tack a question on to this? I recently bought what I thought was the official uncut Sailor Moon season 1 DVD boxset from a seller on Amazon.com. Instead, I got something that looked semi-official, but it only had four discs and it didn't look a thing like the Amazon.com pic. When questioned, the seller claimed it was the "import set" and offered me a full refund if I sent it back.

I've tested the DVDs out and while the picture looks pixaly, wobbly, and grainy (an odd combination, I assure you), and the sound is barely tolerable, I've heard the official ADV ones aren't much (if at all) better, and the subtitles are in English. I'm just wondering if this set is or isn't official, and if I should even bother to refund it and buy the official one. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, in my opinion, those video problems you're describing aren't as bad on the official ADV release; while it might appear sub-par, I don't think it could really be described as pixely and grainy (it unfortunately does wobble sometimes in episode 24). The sound, though, is pretty bad on the official release, but like you said, they have English subtitles. Were I in your shoes, I would try and get your money back and get the official release.

I think I might have that import DVD as well. Tell me if your box set matches my description of the one I have:

- Fold-out case instead of a clamshell.
- On the front is a picture of the five main senshi from season 1, with the Japanese Sailor Moon logo on the bottom, below that reading "Sailor Moon: The Perfect Collection Uncut Edition"
- On the back is a picture of just Sailor Moon doing her salute pose, with the same logo and title on the bottom.
- Disk 1 has the same Sailor Moon pic as the one on the back.
- Disc 2 has a picture of Sailor Moon winking.
- Disc 3 has a picture of Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask, and Luna.
- Disk 4 has a picture of Sailor Moon and Sailor Jupiter.
- It's in Japanese only with English subtitles. But you can't access them via menu; you must use the Subtitle button on your remote.

It seems pretty official-looking for the most part, but even if it is a pitated set, it was done very well and profesionally for a pirate. I thought the picture was fine, but the sound wasn't as rich as on my Pioneer SMS DVDs.

That's the one. And I really don't want to have to send these back, and then spend more money buying a replacement. But I do want quality, and these DVDs don't really show it. I don't know about yours, but mine are definately pixally. You can see it easily when the camera or the characters move quickly.

Thanks again for all your help!

I say get the refund, then notify Amazon.com about the seller so somebody else isn't suckered by this clown.

For the 1st season of the original Japanese Sailor Moon DVD Set with subtitles (ADV release), are the subtitles on the menu or do I have to press "subtitles" on the DVD remote control? Now what about the Season 3 & 4 SM DVDS (Geneon release)? I know that both seasons have the English & Japanese versions/with subtitles but are the subtitles on the DVD itself or do I have to press "subtitles" on the remote control? Also if I have to press "subtitles" on the remote control, will the subtitles be like it would if the subtitles were already ON the DVD? I hope this question made sense! Thanks! :)

Geneon's realease you can accses a menu where you can turn the subtitles on and off. ADV's realese you have to use the subtitles button on your remote.

Need some help on SM DVD

Post by SailorMoonFan » Sun Jun 25, 2006 5:08 pm

What Sailor Moon DVD Sets do you have? I would like to know so it will help me decide which SM collection that I want to buy.

Do you have the:

(1) bootleg companies with the title "Perfect Collection" written on the DVD set? If so how is the picture/sound quality and are the SUBTITLES accurate or the same as the official released SM DVDS?

(2) Do you have the ADV released collection? If so how is the picture/sound quality?

(3) Do you also have the Geneon/Pioneer collection of Sailor Moon S & SuperS

(4) Also how is the Sailor Stars collection? Even though it hasn't been released in an official release how is the picture/sound quality? Also are the SUBTITLES translated accurately to the Japanese dialogue?

Thanks!

The Perfect Collection is probably crap since it is all crammed into few DVDs. ADV's release was mediocre at the best. I have the Geneon release for S only. Stars has been officially released but not outside Japan.

Do you have the Sailor Stars season even though the copy released in America is a bootleg and not released through an official company? I don't think any company is going to bring Sailor Stars on DVD.

Ummmm what do you mean? Are you asking if I have the official SailorStars DVDs? No, I don't. But I DO plan on getting them. Even if I don't know Japanese.

No one in America has the official version of Sailor Stars. I don't even think that there will ever be an official release. The Sailor Stars DVDS are in Japanese but they are also subtitled. But I'm trying to ask someone on this board if the subtitles on the Sailor Stars episodes an accurate translation from the Japanese.

Yes, there are people who have an official release. You can buy them off this site:
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/anime/index.html
There IS an official release. All 200 episodes, the 3 movies, and I know at least 5 out of the 7 specials all got digitally remastered audio and picture on a brand new DVD release. And thus we have what all the fans call "The R2 DVDs". No SM DVDs from Japan are subtitled b/c it was made for a Japanese audience. The only subbed SailorStars DVDs are bootlegs, so it just depends on how well it is translated by the subbers.
