Why is the Anime in Mono?

Post by sailormelvin » Sun Feb 20, 2005 4:53 pm

I have a serious question for everyone. Why was the entierty of the anime recorded in mono audio? I can maybe understand the first couple of seasons (although stereo was already pretty around by then in america), but S, SuperS and StarS certiantly could have been recorded in stereo. Does anyone know the reasons behind this? As I'm listining to the Memorial Music Box I realize that this is what Sailor Moon would sound like in stereo and it sounds really nice.

Something to do with budget, it might of been too expansive to do the entire show in Stereo. However, 2 of the movies are in Stereo, and Ami-chan's First Love is in Dolby Stereo.

Sailor Stars was in mono? Really? :? I can't imagine what the series would've been like if it was animated in 2000 or later. :P

Edit:
Actually, I believe there was surround sound in Pioneer's S DVD release for the episode where Uranus VS Moon (in the S finale). There was surround when the Outers transformed and when they attacked. I wasn't sure what happened there but sound was all around me. :?:

Sailorstars is in Mono. I originally thought it was in Stereo, but I found out it was Mono.

As for the Surrund Sound that's something Pioneer (Genon) did. Aprently they got hold of seperate masters. This isn't exactly true surround sound though.

I noticed on my S DVDs from Geneon that when the ending theme, or eyecatch plays, if you switch it to English Audio, it's the Japanese version, but in Stereo.

Sailor Moon was done in mono? Is this why the sound quality on my SMS VHS movie is so bad?

If it's Pioneer release, I'm not surprise. Sound qaulity can be good in Mono, if done correctly.

Sailor Moon S Movie was originally "Stereo"

P.S. If it's Fansub or Pioneer (Genon) release try playing it on Hi Fi Stereo VCR, if it still is poor, then it's either the tape or the recording and possibley the VCR you're using.
