Worst non-English dub/ manga translation errors?

Post by purplefeltangel » Sat Feb 12, 2005 10:45 pm

I haven't seen a thread like this before, so I thought I'd start it up . . . .

For anyone who has seen a foreign dub or read a foreign manga translation, what were some of the worst errors? (By "errors," I don't generally mean changes, unless they were really stupid. Like the Starlights being replaced by their "twin sisters" in the Italian dub . . . o_o;; )

Here's a least favourite of mine:

As I'm sure pretty much everyone knows, in the manga, Tuxedo Mask gets an attack called "Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber." This is a pun, because it could mean a "smoking bomber" literally -- but "smoking" and "bomber" are also kinds of jackets! (Ha ha.)

This is a pun that would also make sense in French, sort of. Why? Well, even though "smoking" is masculine (therefore "le" and not "la"), it's the word used for a tuxedo in French. For example, after Bunny meets Mamoru in the beginning of the French manga, she goes [rough translation], "What is he doing wearing a smoking in broad daylight?!" (French word in italics.)

Despite this, and the fact that most French readers probably speak at least some English (although they translated most attack names, they actually *added in* a whole bunch of English phrases and words), they translated "Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber" as something along the lines of (if I remember correctly), "Tuxedo Explosion!" This doesn't even remain consistent, like all French attacks, as later he calls it something different, though I forget what it is.

That's not the worst of the stupid translations Glénat makes, either. -_-; Just the only one I could think of right now.

Anyway, that's my two cents (ha again) -- foreign dub-bash away!

I think (in the English manga) whenever Darien calls Bunny "Buns" is pretty lame... I don't know what it is, but I just think it sounds gay (I automatically think of a butt or Honey Buns whenever he says that). It makes me wanna call her Buns of Steel whenever I see it.

I hate to nitpick, but I did say "non-English." ^^; Ah well. That is pretty funny. I'd heard about it before, but it sounded so weird to me that I thought, "Did he *actually* say that? No way . . . ."

Incidentally, in the French manga, Bunny and Mamoru never give each other special nicknames. They're just . . . Bunny and Mamoru. ^^; At least as far as I can tell . . . lol . . .

You know what? You should read our, Polish version of manga. You could see such miracles as "Rei Mizuno" or male "Sailor Rete" or "Mnemozja" or Umino called "Mizuno" ( I think Mr. Translator likes Ami very much).
About Polish translation in anime - Fish Eye is girl. And Tamasaburo too. Venus' first attack is "Groch Fasola!" ( Pea Bean!) :D
Mercury's first - "Mydlo powidlo" ( "Soap and jam")
second - "Zywa woda sily doda" ( Living water will give you strenght),
Neptune's - Zwierciadelko znikadelko ( Little Mirror of vanishing),
Pink Sugar Heart Attack - "Ksiezycowe perelki, rozowe cukierki" ( Moon little pearls, pink candies),
Jupiter Oak Evolution - "Ksiezyce Jowisza ("Jupiter's Moons).
The title is "Czarodziejka z Ksiezyca" ( Sorceress from Moon), Usagi is called Bunny Tsukino, Sailor Lead Crow - "Ognista Czarodziejka" (Fire Sorcerres), Sailor Aluminium Siren - "Alumina Selen" (???). Rhett Butler became "James Bond".

Aha.

In the French dub, what do I remember that was stupid ?

Hmm. Minako named first Mathilda, then in one ep being called Amélie Morin cause this was her dubber's name o.O ...

I'd have to rewatch some of it to be more precise though. Found a website where I could find them French dubbed, I so have to upload at least a few clips XD !
