But didn't the senshi start high school after SuperS? So wouldn't it make sense for SS to take place during the Summer?

I always thought they got a whole year off so they could study for high school entrance exams. Don't most Japanese schools do this? The way I understand it is, after middle school, you get a year off to prepare for a high school entrance exam, and if you do well, you get to go to school. Right?

Ehh, I very much doubt all of SuperS took place in the summer. SuperS, like all the other seasons starts with the girls wearing winter/fall clothes, halfway through changing to summer/spring clothes and back to the winter/fall clothes. As for the taking a year off to study I have no idea. Personally I just think that the animators didn't think it through at all and just didn't draw them in their uniforms.

Come on, people. In S, they're worried about High School Entrance Exams. In Stars, they're just starting High School. Unless you happen to know of a mysterious grade that comes after "middle school/junior high school" but before High school, it took place in between. And remember, Japanese breaks do not coincide with ours.

What you're discussing is arguably the biggest plot hole of all: the fact that the chronology simply doesn't make sense. A year passes for every season. Since Sailor Moon was shown throughout the entire year, the weather in the episodes was made to match the time that they were due to be broadcast: so the obligatory beach episode would be on in summer, etc. The problem with this system is that it suggests the season takes place in real time, which it obvioisly doesn't, because the girls only advance three grades in five seasons.
In Classic and R, they're in the second year of middle school. In S and SuperS, they're in the third year, and they start high school in Stars. Some people have tried to explain the fact that the first two seasons happen in the same year by claiming that time was "overwritten" at the end of the first season. But this explanation is fraught with problems, because there is plenty of evidence that the events of the first season still happened- Naru and Umino are still a couple, and people remember who Tuxedo Kamen is before he even appears in R. If the first season hadn't happened, neither of these things would be possible.
Sadly, there is no decent way of making five years into three, so this is just one plot hole we'll have to live with ^_^

The Classic/R plothole is something we're stuck with, as the writers had to come up with an excuse for their not having memories of the past year ("Let's trans-migrate them back to the beginning of the season!") They obviously didn't expect Sailormoon to continue into R, hence why we have the Ail/Ann arc.
Supers is again a problem of miscommunication between Takeuchi and TOEI; they WERE supposed to begin High School in SuperS, but the writers goofed big time, and Naoko was somewhat displeased with that, as it makes the girls out younger than they should be, or something.

Here's another plot hole I've noticed regarding the Star Seeds. Whenever the Sailor Animamates try to steal the Star Seeds in the earlier episodes of Sailor Stars, if it wasn't a true Star Seed it would turn black, and seeing no use for it, the Sailor Animamates would turn the target into a Phage. However, later on in the series when Galaxia attacks the Three Lights' concert, she starts stealing everybody's Star Seed and they don't turn black when they're stolen, either. So, what's going on here?

I'd have to watch the scene again, but my rationalisation is that Star Seeds don't always turn black right away. We don't see the attack for very long, so they may have turned black later. Also, it' possible that some people in the audience did have True Star Seeds (since it's sort of implied that you don't have to be a Sailor Senshi to have one).

regarding continuity, most of you have probably read this page
http://www.genvid.com/lunarch/faqyou/continuity.html
but i think it makes some good points.
my answer is that almost no long-running series have believable continuity due to so many factors including changes in staff, time restrictions, ratings etc., also it is fiction and is bound to have inconsistancies.
regarding pluto, i think that in S she was just saying that she would be punished for her crime (punished by who? - i don't know) and that since she could control time anyways it would be easy enough for her to transport herself to anywhere at anytime.
another thing i never understood is why hotaru becomes a baby again (maybe this is explained in the manga?). I know that she uses her silence glaive surprise (although i wish they had shown this because i would have never known if i didn't read up on the manga) but that still doesn't explain anything about her re-incarnation. she uses her power and then she's a baby? it just doesn't hold water.

I think in the anime they were trying to do the same thing with Hotaru becoming a baby so that it was more faithful to the manga.
Or something like that 0____o
I never got the ending of the Infinity Arc in the manga so what I'm about to say may not be right. I think what happened is that, in the manga, Saturn would die if she used her powers, but she had to to destroy the enemy. Moon's job was to use her own powers to restore everything that got destroyed minus the enemies. This led to Hotaru being restored. I think she's a baby because it gives her another chance to start her life over (because in the manga she was killed, turned part cyborg because of her father, and was havign seizures all the time, not exactly a good life).another thing i never understood is why hotaru becomes a baby again (maybe this is explained in the manga?). I know that she uses her silence glaive surprise (although i wish they had shown this because i would have never known if i didn't read up on the manga) but that still doesn't explain anything about her re-incarnation. she uses her power and then she's a baby? it just doesn't hold water.

Do dub plot holes count here, too? Because as I was re-watching the English dub of episode one tonight, I noticed a pretty big one. At the beginning of the episode, DiC inserts some clips from Japanese episode 44, showing the Dark Kingdom destroying the Silver Millennium, while a narrator summarizes the events that took place in the past. The dub states that after the Moon Kindgom was destroyed, Queen Serenity used the powers of the Silver Crystal to freeze everyone in "moonbeam crystals" and sent them to the future on Earth. If everyone on the Moon Kingdom was killed, and Queen Serenity just sent everyone to the future, how did Serena and the others wind up with their families in the dub? And what would be the point of Queen Serenity sending a bunch of dead people to the future? And I know that in the Japanese version everyone was reincarnated, but I'm asking this question as if the dub and the original were seperate entities, if that makes any sense.

Re: Plot Holes
I know its a little late to reply to this question but I have my opinion on it. A lot of people think that Galaxia knew exactly who held true starseeds during the SailorStars season(I mean she had already taken over 80% of the Galaxy or so surely she worked out a system.)This is backed up by several facts about Galaxia..Gummi Tear wrote:If Galaxia's intent was to collect the "true" star seeds of every planet in the galaxy, and she KNEW that the "true" star seeds were held by the SENSHI of these planets, then why in the world did she keep having her cronies go after random people? You would think that the second Sailor Moon and the rest of the senshi appeared, that would have been it. I mean, I realize that would have made for a pretty dull season, but still. Couldn't they have found a way to work around this huge plot hole?
(By the way this is all based on the Anime version of SailorStars)
1. She obviously had the ability to "sense" true starseeds as she talks about it in the scene where Sailor TinNyanko walks in on her detransformed.
2. The first thing she did (after Nehelania's fit) was attack Mamoru herself on his plane to America. Obviously she had some reasoning as she wouldn't just attack random planes searching for starseeds.Especially since she handled it herself.
3. The fact that she stayed on Earth after she found Earth's starseed inside Mamoru proves that she knew other Sailor Senshi were on Earth. Which is unusual because usually a planet has only one guardian. It was just happenstance that the senshi were sent to be reborn on earth. Also the fact that she attacked Earth first is odd because, coming from either direction, Pluto or Mercury would be closer(not counting the sun). This shows that she new all the senshi of the Sol system were on Earth ahead of time.
4. She knew that only Sailor Senshi held true star seeds yet failed to disclose this vital information to the Animamates(who were searching football players and old orchestra conducters who obviously weren't Senshi)The Animamates also ran into the Sol System senshi many times and knew that they were senshi but didn't suspect them of having true starseeds(Aluminum Seiren found this out on her own). If she really wanted them to find them faster, wouldn't she had told them? She also didn't seem very suprised or even angry when the Animamates failed repeatedly and almost cheerfully disposed of them.
5.Even after Aluminum Seiren said she knew who held a true starseed, Galaxia killed her before she could disclose the information, even if Galaxia was planning on destroying her, wouldn't she wait till after Seiren told her?
6.Kakyuu(I think its spelled with two "u"s) had to hide herself inside the incense burner so Galaxia wouldn't find her. This also proves that Galaxia could "track" holders of true starseeds.
7.Before she even physically came to Earth, she freed Nehelania to awaken Saturn so that she could collect Saturn's "mature" starseed. This gives the impression that Galaxia has almost omnipotent knowledge of the senshi of Earth and thier history.
So why did Galaxia send the Animamates to find Starseeds she knew about all along? The best assumption is that Galaxia/Chaos is more melovolant then we see at a surface level. It probably was her sick little game of disposing of the Animamates one by one making them feel useless like they were garbage. Watching them beg for another chance while she took there bracelets and they slowly disintigrated. After they were all disposed of, she went back to collecting the starseeds of our Galaxy. Sounds dark, but it is really the only thing that makes since, unless you just want to call it filler material.

Umm...the dub is just messed up. Especially the first season. Im not sure if they talk about reincarnation or not. I guess it might be implied although I dont really stress on the dub that much, waste of time.Cardcaptor Takato wrote:Do dub plot holes count here, too? A late reply to a late reply...Star_Inferno wrote:I know its a little late to reply to this question but I have my opinion on it. This Star Seed problem really deosn't go away, does it? I think you've covered most of the pertinent points, but there is one issue that suggests Galaxia wasn't entirely playing the Animamates for fools. At various points, Crow and Seiren mention their "rivalry" and it is heavily implied (and possibly stated outright) that they are experienced at collecting Star Seeds, and have been doing so successfully on other worlds. If this was the case, wouldn't they know to go after Sailor Senshi too? Surely, if they'd collected as many True Star Seeds as is suggested, they'd have realised they were all coming from Sailor Senshi?
Well, I'm going to stand by my theory that not only Sailor Senshi have True Star Seeds. Here's some further justification.
-When Galaxia comes to Earth, she removes the Star Seeds of everyone in the vicinity. Why did she do this if she was only interested in Star Seeds from Sailor Senshi?
-Tuxedo Kamen isn't a Sailor Senshi, but he has a True Star Seed.
And some more supposition:
-Galaxia's initially somewhat lax attitude to Earth may imply that she didn't consider the planet a threat. After triggering Saturn's revival, she probably sent in the Animamtes without much thought. After all, Earth's Sailor Senshi had only been active for a few years and she probably assumed the Animamtes could handle them. If not, why didn't she swoop in and deal with them straight away?
-If the theory about non-Senshi having True Star Seeds is true, then maybe it was the Animamates' job to collect these, while Galaxia dealt with Sailor Senshi. Seiren, Crow and Nyanko went after Sailor Moon's unusually bright Star Seed specifically to impress Galaxia with their prowess, so maybe this wasn't business as usual.
-Whether or not Senshi have True Star Seeds may vary from one solar system to another. We know that our Sailor Senshi have them, as do the Animamtes, Kakyuu and (originally) Galaxia. But curiously, I don't recall Galaxia ever trying to take the Starlights' Star Seeds. Perhaps they didn't have True Star Seeds.
Ultimately though, we are left trying to make sense of something that doesn't really make sense. The best we can do is offer theories that esplain at least some of the inconsistencies...

In episode 88, "The Last Battle Between Light and Dark! Vow to Tomorrow's Love!", after the Death Phantom is defeated, Artemis comments that both the Earth and Nemesis had been saved, but what does Artemis mean that it was saved? Did Nemesis' enviroment turn into something like the Earth's? If that was the case, did the Black Moon go to live on Earth after all or would they continue to live on Nemesis? And how exactly was Nemesis saved by Sailor Moon? I thought Nemesis was a natural thing that couldn't be saved? Like, it was always naturally dark there all the time?
