Amazon/ess Quartet

Post by Kameko » Thu Dec 30, 2004 1:17 am

From the episode 143 comparison:
The Amazoness Quartet are called the "Amazon Quartet" in the dub. I thought this was worth mentioning since a lot of fans did not like this change at all.
I actually like this change and find it an improvement. An Amazon is one of a race of warrior women from Greek mythology so the word amazon is feminine to begin with. Calling the Quartet Amazoness is redundant. Amazoness isn't even a word. My browser highlights red words that are spelled wrong and Amazoness is highlighted red. The spell check of the forum also tells you that it is spelled wrong and suggest Amazons or Amazon's.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

Yes Amazoness isn't a word, but it's likely that Naoko made up the word because it sounds cute. That's what I've always believed

That may be but, being a lover of Greek mythology, it annoys me. And as I said before it's redundant. It's like saying Sahara Desert when Sahara means desert, so you're saying desert desert.

It's a kid's show. I really don't think it's that big of a deal. Naoko wrote the story, she can use whatever words, real, cute or made up, she wants.

Check out that article. It should help clear things up.

Also, topic moved to Sailor Moon section, as it doesn't really pertain to the comparisons themselves.

Personally, I prefer Amazoness Quartet to Amazon Quartet. I think Amazoness sounds more feminine and cute than Amazon, and that's what all of those girls are: Cute and feminine. Some more than others though ^^;;

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

I'm a Greek Mythology fan to but remember it's a kid show and it doesn't have to be perfect all the time.

I agree, 'amazoness' does sound a lot cuter, plus I think the phrase 'Amazoness Quartet' sounds nicer and more fluid than 'Amazon Quartet.' However, I remember reading at Dies Gaudi that the correct romanisation for the kana Takeuchi Naoko used is 'Amazones Quartetto.' *sigh* You gets these problems translating a phonetic script into english or another language.
