I guess what I meant in my last post was that if they felt they needed to change the relationships in the show then they should have put it on a different time slot, perhaps aimed more towards teenagers than younger children.
I know what you're going to say, 10 years ago or so when the show came to the U.S. and was broadcast there would have been no spot for it to air other than possibly channels like MTV, or HBO, and they probably would not have been successful at all.
Perhaps if Sailor Moon had begun airing when Cartoon Network had premiered their Adult Swim programing which runs late at night, then the show may not have had to be edited.
If you enjoy the dubbed version, then that's great for you. But I feel a great sadness when companies have to change shows that were successful before to make money here. There is a beauty in the natural storylines that I feel is lacking in the dubbed version.

I completely agree with your feelings about the dubbed version. I don't like it as much as I like the childhood memories associated with watching it.SailorLunagoddess wrote:I guess what I meant in my last post was that if they felt they needed to change the relationships in the show then they should have put it on a different time slot, perhaps aimed more towards teenagers than younger children.

However, the series was given to the highest bidder. That was DiC. DiC does childrens' programming. There would be no way that DiC would do a show for Adult Swim.
Cartoon Network would also be very unlikely to add this program to their Adult Swim block. The first anime that was ever added to it was Cowboy Bebop, a decidedly macho and shonen anime. There would be no way that, especially in the premiere of Adult Swim, they would have added a shoujo anime with all the frills and skirts and sparkles.
Besides, Cartoon Network might not ever have made the decision to air Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim were it not for Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon showed the Western world what anime can do and be. And that was the DiC version. If it had come to North America later, we might not have that. It might have missed the ball completely. We might all think that all anime was for boys like Dragon Ball Z. I know I never would have gotten into anime were it not for Sailor Moon.
So I think, regardless of whether or not the show was dubbed well, the timing for its release and the way it was released was impeccable. It's not even the show so much as the reception of it that made the way it happened absolutely perfect. Anime in the western world owes so much to Sailor Moon that if it had happened differently, if it had aired on a later timeslot or been picked up a few years later, we would likely not have anime fandom in North America on the scale that we do now.
To use an extremely cheesy and weird metaphor, Sailor Moon is a little bit like anime's Jesus. (If there are two Jesuses, the other being Dragon Ball Z.) Both Jesus and Sailor Moon were mangled to pieces (and a lot of people hate both Sailor Moon and Jesus!), but because of them, everyone else can have things better (in Christianity and in anime fandom). And I think that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make, especially since now we have the subtitled release.

Please leave the Lord Jesus Christ out of this. It' s so rude, offensive and bad, just BAD. This is anime we're talking about here. It pains me being a Devoted Christian to here this. And besides DIC should be damned for what they did to SAILOR MOON.purplefeltangel wrote:I completely agree with your feelings about the dubbed version. It's a fair and effective analogy, I think, and not particularly insulting. She's not actually saying that Sailor Moon is saving the world by its sacrifice, only the anime world. Also, not everyone is quite as reverent of the old carpenter, and it's going to be difficult if you're going to take offence at every non-reverent mention of his name.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"
The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

At the risk of sounding rude, It's not your place to suggest to others as what the content of their replies should be. It was just an example. A odd example, but nothing that could be considered blasphomus. She did not degrade, berate or make fun of Jesus. She simply made an example. In addition : You certainly don't have much room to talk since the majority of your posts contain sexual innuendos of some sort.

And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

You call me blasphemous for making an analogy, and then promote hellfire towards an animation company just because they didn't do a good job with your favourite anime? Someone needs to get their priorities straight.sailor_mask1 wrote:Please leave the Lord Jesus Christ out of this. It' s so rude, offensive and bad, just BAD. This is anime we're talking about here. What did the mods say? Drop it, and that referrs to BOTH SIDES. I won't lock this unless Tiff gives the OK (it's been a nice topic otherwise), but I will stress both her and Tempest's desires to return this topic back to its original intent.

Thanks DiC for
making the voices sound terrible.
Almost not even making an atempt to match the lips with almost any of the words.
Making an early protest that japan's writing system is "bad" then just being to lazy to cut the rest
Making stupid useless changes that had no revelence other then to anoy us.

Like others, I will only give props to DiC for starting it all. Some of the songs here and there weren't TOO bad.
I remember when I first saw Sailormoon, when it was on Saturday mornings. It was horrible and my reaction was "GAY!!!" I'm also a guy and I still don't know if it's "socially acceptable" for guys to enjoy Sailormoon but now I don't care. I've seen all seasons dubbed and I ran into another guy years back who loved anime and he introduced me into the original and I love it. I've seen all the seasons numerous times and of course the movies multiple times.
Thank you DiC......kinda.

Why not? There are plenty of male Sailor Moon members here and elsewhere. And if you go to an anime convention, so might be lucky enough to spot the elusive male sailor senshi.Mamoru wrote:...and I still don't know if it's "socially acceptable" for guys to enjoy Sailormoon but now I don't care...

Here's mine
I want to thank DiC for corrupting the minds of little children and being half reponsible for two of the most annoying fan terms created, ''subbie'' and ''dubbie''. I want to thank them for turning the ''cheesy'' Japanese music into an even more cheese-fest in the DiC verison that people is an ''improvement''. I want to thank them for making its worshippers believe that their verison is better than the original. I want to thank them for their ''improvements'' on everything the Japanese ''one'' does ''wrong''. And finally, I want to thank them for making me a Sailor Moon fan, despite how crappy the English verison was.

I Want to thank Dic for getting sailor moon first then Toonmakers! I just found out last night that the company Toonmakers was trying to get sailor moon but toei rejected the company Toonmakers from getting the license for sailor moon. If you want to see what Toonmakers wanted to do with the show, go to http://www.toonamiarsenal.com/ then go to downloads pick sailor moon and then download The Saban Nightmare.

It wasn't Saban, it was a company called Toonmakers.
Not to sound rude, but Tiff JUST corrected this misconseption (for about the ten thousandth time) just two posts ago.
