I think it was more because the Stars season got a different character designer that year. Well it looks like there's at least five animation directors and at least two character designers. Hitoshi Doi's site lists some of them and the episodes they worked on. But only eps from the first two seasons ate listed, which is why I say "at least". It's possible that some of them worked on the later three.. http://www.tcp.com/doi/smoon/staff/index.html
