-_- thanks tiff, I didnt know where to go...

Please read this small arctile about why the releases were "sub-par" Wassup you guys? Well, anyways, I bought the Season One boxset thinking that all those reviews were just a bunch of critics, and that most of it wasnt true. But ho-ho-ho-ho boy was I wrong! It was so cheaply produced, I've seen better bootlegs! (No seriously). The video quality was produced so grainy, along with deteriating sound, that fizzes in and out in most episodes, that it's hard to tell what's going on. For the most part, the translators were SO lazy! I mean, I could tranlate this better! (I'm fluent in japanese BTW). Here's some examples:

Episode 12:
ADV: Jadite: Darn that detestable girl!
Reality: "I hate that spiteful little wench!"

very different. Another?

Episode 1:
ADV: Usagi: "I can't believe it"
Reality: "Who the hell do you think you are?"

Episode 41:
ADV: Mamoru: "You impertanent little..."
Reality: "How could I lose to someone like you..."

Episode 34:
ADV: Usagi: "Huh? What the heck?"
Reality: "What's up with him?"

I could go on and on, but I'd rather not. If you think that they didn't say what they said, please email me the episode it was in, and who said it. I'll be more than happy to translate it for you.

Anyways, on with the quality. The main reason why the quality was grainy was because of the poor transfering onto the DVD's. To make things worse, they had very poor quality DVD's that you can get for $1.99 at a computer store, rather that some high quality ones like Mitsui Gold. Also, their equiptment was very low standart, believe me, none of this is made up. As you can see, in most episodes, there is usually a line that dances around, or something that's in the screen that look's weird, that's because they used a low-frame projection that the DVD's get their Audio and Video from. Because of all this, when their "projecters" occasionally wear out, the Video deteriates, or the audio get's fuzzed out. An example would be in episode 36.

Prolouge: When the music first starts to play, if you pay close attention, you can hear the bass dieing out, and then getting muffled, and then it returns to normal.

Part A: About the 20 sec.'s before the commercial break, the video starts to get very blurry, and the lines start to fade, and get wider.
This lasts for about the next 2 minutes. (About 1:30 into Part B)

Theirs way too many of these problem's to state, so I won't even bother... however, just to be quick, ADV's material was the Region 2 DVD masters. (The ones that you can get in japan). When they used their projectors that the DVD's get their video copied from, it would malfunction, or stop alot leaving the video to deteriate. The audio was in japanese 2.0, and got constantly deteriated because of their Audio copiers. When they transfered onto the DVD's, the low frame rates would constantly allow something to interfere with the sound, therefore, muffling it. The muffle scores are a 6.71349203365, which is pretty high (That's what my computer's synchroniser detected), and there is no way this can be fixed. Here's a way I can explain this. Imagine that you have a sound recorder, and your satnding far away from the speaker that you want to record from. If your too far away, while the audio is trasnfering, oxygen dulls out the sound waves before they reach the recorder. Also, it took only a couple months to make this, so bassically it was all rushed.
The only ones to blame is ADV. I think I've covered everything, if there's anything else you want to know email me: [email protected]

I don't really have a problem with the boxsets anymore considering the fact that ADV started their disc-glitch-fix procedure. :? But, I still want the Japanese release because of the better covers and extras. The CG art on there is just so beautiful!

I imagine the quality of Classic and R is a bit distorted because sailormoon was orginally made in 1990 I think. I believe earlier in this topic it was mentioned that some damage might have happened to the masters. It's quite possiable that the grainy video and distorted sound isn't even ADV's fault. I own buttloads of ADV anime DvDs and they are excellent in production. If you'd like, i can PM you a list of the ADV videos I have so you can do your own comparison. And to be fair, my S bootleg set's Japanese Audio is very low-quality and these are direct pioneer bootlegs.

Now all I need to do is buy the First two seasons.

I'm sorry, but I find it very hard to believe that Usagi would say "Who the hell do you think you are?". Are you sure you're not embellishing it a little? Her character just wouldn't do that, and i've listened to some of her phrases (I can pick up on Japanese a bit), and never once have I heard her say anything like that. Hell, I don't even th ink I recall a time when "damn" came out of her mouth, whereas it did Jupiter's.

I can't even think of a part in episode one where she would say that. Not to mention the fact that "what the hell" is pretty much a North American idiom, and from what I've learned of Japanese (taught to me by a Japanese person, mind you), Japanese doesn't even always directly translate into English. When translating Japanese, a lot of the times people have to find the word that best SUITS what someone is saying in Japanese. For example, the words "shi matta" are usually translated as "damn" or "shit". But when I asked my friend (the same Japanese person) what it meant, he had a very hard time explaining it, simply saying that it was said in anger. When I asked if it meant "damn", he said no. Same with "anata", when addressing a loved one or spouse. It's generally translated as "dear", or "sweetheart", but a Japanese couple told me that it simply had no translation, and that it was just something affectionate way to say "you".

I do know there was a goof in episode 4. In the introduction, Beryl says something to the effect of "I've heard of Yoma more forgiving than these mothers during test times". Which you can hear the "yoma" if you listen. ADVs translation went complete elsewhere on that one, as if they ignored it completely.

That's funny, because it sounds very made up.

Scratch that... it is very made up. All of it. ADV are a professional company who have released hundreds of high-quality DVDs. No professional company, including ADV, make DVDs in such a careless way as you describe. The problem is crappy masters.

I agree, OTF. I mean, I doesn't sound totally made up, but I find it hard to believe that a proffessional company would do a shoddy job like that. As I mentioned on my previous post, that I own alot of ADV lables and they are all top quality audio [English and Japanes] and video, so it's probably something wrong with the original japanese masters. I'm sure what lazyasianboi says has merit, but I just have a hard time believing some of these claims.

Agreed. I happen to own three of their products. A Japanese monster movie trilogy. The transfers for the films are simply gorgeous. Way better then the R2's. I only wish that the company would release their animes anamorphic, which makes it sparkle and look as if it were made yesterday.

Speaking of which, why couldn't ADV just rip the R2 DVD's picture and audio quality, and slap-stick the subs? Am I missing something here?.

For one thing, you're totally overexaggerating the benefit of anamorphic video. It means there's higher vertical resolution, but that won't solve problems relating to poor source material.

Secondly, ADV have released plenty of anamorphic widescreen DVDs (offhand I can think of the Noir TV series, and Dirty Pair: Project Eden). The only time they release things in non-anamorphic widescreen is when that's all the source material they have will allow (which is often the case).

Presumably their contract wouldn't allow it.

Aww, you're lucky. I wish I bought the Sailor Moon DVD boxset at that cheap of a price. I got it for a $104, which although it's cheaper than $150, is still pretty pricy. What's the cheapest price the DVD boxset has been avaiable at (both boxsets, that is).
