ULN only deals in domestic media. ^^ I order all of my domestic anime from there.

The best place to purchase the sets is http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com

Ok, so, stupid question:

ADV lost the rights to releasing these. Everyone seems happy over this. Maybe I'm just a pessimist here, but I haven't read anything about anyone else picking up the rights to finish out the series in any official capacity. Am I just missing something? Is someone else going to make them that I just don't know about?

I have the first set. Audio is indeed horrible. And if I could speak Japanese and wasn't reading the subtitles anyway I'd care more. :P

But I'm pretty satisfied with it. Better than the big load of nothing I had before.

Correction: The rights are expiring, and Toei chose not to let ADV renew the license.

Odds on, Toei will probably shelve overseas rights to Sailor Moon. So once Geneon rights expire, that'll be the end of Sailor Moon in America. Honestly, I no longer see any new licences for any part of SM in the near foreseeable future.

Correction to the correction: Toei never made any deal with ADV at all, ADV got the rights sublicensed from DiC.

It is true that Toei will probably shelve the rights to American Sailor Moon though. With DiC letting their contract expire at the end of the month and Geneon already hinting at difficulty of extending their contract (though it's not known when that will end), Toei will probably give SM over here a rest for a while, probably 2 - 5 years, just like they have with some of their own shows in Japan I've heard.

Dub Audio in the Uncut box sets

Post by Isca » Sat Mar 20, 2004 4:22 pm

I'm rather new here, so I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. But on the Season 2 box set, there is at least one occurance of audio from the dubbed edition!

It's on the first episode of the fifth CD. When Usagi and Mamoru are getting married in Usagi's dream, when the confetti and booze are dumped on them, you can tell rather easily that the laughter is the American voice actors. The music cue that ends the dream is also from the DiC show.

Had anyone else noticed this?

I really have to wonder why there is not bootlegs of the Japanese Sailormoon DVDs. -_-" Maybe they're too expensive for the bootleggers.

:?: I know that people have been saying that Best Buy and deep discounted DVD's is the best place to buy these boxed sets but I found a website that supposedly sells them for 49.99 plus 7 dollars shipping and handling for Canadian residents. But I'm not sure if this is US dollars or what? I've never bought anything over the Internet before so I'm kinda clueless with this kinda thing. Here is the site:

Blondie: Right Stuf is reputable - several of my friends have placed orders from them and have had no trouble. You should probably contact them directly about their policy on international orders, though.

Yeah thanks, I guess I'll try to contact them. I just can't imagine it being only 50 bucks Cdn each! That would be great though...
I wonder why they would be so cheap, though?

Look a few posts above yours and your question is already answered in a way. ADV no longer has the rights to produce any Sailor Moon products, thus all of their SM products have ceased to print. Because of the OOP (out of print) status of the two uncut boxes, many anime retailers have reduced the price dramitacally to allow consumers to buy the series really cheap while they can still get it as well as an attempt to clear out inventory of the boxes to make room for other merchandise. This is why Right Stuf and some other retailers bought a lot of the two boxes as the expiration date of DiC's contrat came to a close. However, only stores that specialize in anime or invest a good amount of resources into anime will have these marked down prices. Stores such as Best Buy as you mentioned, although their prices are marked down from the MSRP, they won't mark it down as much as stores who devote more time and resources to anime. All these stores like Best Buy just mass purchase inventory to be able to offer merchandise for a reasonable price below the MSRP and still make a good profit as the prices attract more people to their stores. However, since they don't focus on a speciality, many of these stores don't know or don't care enough to find out special info such as the status of the SM liscense because all they do is order new merchandise when order forms are given to them and put it on the shelf, and if they notice that various items sell well, they'll order more of those items next shipment. They don't keep track of any news and such in the anime world, they'll know next to nothing if you ask them anything besides street dates, which most of these stores don't even bother with when it comes to anime, as many times they just put anime on the shelf when it comes in. The anime speciality stores or stores who devote time and resources to have a good anime section, actually do keep up with all the news, so when something happens like in this situation, they will order a lot and offer it really cheap for the fans. Yes Best Buy and other stores do offer good prices, but when special cases such as the SM rights expiring happens, they won't change their prices where anime stores will, which is why with some retailers you'll see the boxes selling from $40 - $60 a pop. I hope that answers your question.

Also, the boxes are $50 US at Right Stuf, not $50 CDN. The boxes are worth the money now thet they're so low in price, and Right Stuf is a great store to deal with and you should have no problems getting them shipped to Canada.

Thanks so much for answering my question so eloquently... ! Thanks for the advice and explaining that it's 50 US dollars not Cdn. It's still a good deal so I think I'll go for it, even though it's not the greatest quality I can't wait any longer to finally see the undubbed, uncut version of SM!

I visited a Suncoast store while on my trip to Canada. They seemed to have an entire shelf of anime DVDs plus some more shelves for American-translated manga. For DVDs, I found the Sailor Moon Dream Set as well as several SuperS and S DVDs. There were both Signature Series or normal versions. However, I did not see any of the boxsets. Isn't that weird? I thought I would see it finally in stores but I guess not. :?

Haven't the boxsets been discontinued because ADV and DiC lost their rights to Sailor Moon? If so, then it's not that weird at least to me. I did see the Sailor Moon R boxset on sale at my local FYE about a month ago, though, which I was kind of surprised to see still there.

The sets aren't being printed anymore, but neither have they been pulled from store shelves. Stores can sell what they have left of the boxes, but once they're gone, it's very unlikely they'll get any more.

¬_¬ at least you American's got the boxsets at reduced prices. Up here in little Canada, no one bothered to mark them down. Amazon.ca and Future Shop (the only places I know that carried them) still sold them for $150. I'll be damned if I'm paying that much for something that's shite. T_T poor little Canada, never gets the discounts.

I hear ya sista! I'm too from B.C. Canada...and I've been debating on whether or not to fork out over $150 bucks at Future Shop for the damn things! I wish they would become marked down so badly...there's still our option of buying online though...check out my earlier post about rightstuf.com....
