Should or I should not get the DVD box-set?

Post by Sailor Solider » Fri Oct 24, 2003 6:24 pm

Hello. My name is Sailor Solider, and I'm 13 (male, ummm ... hope no one finds it strange). I've been wondering about getting the neat, gorgous-looking Sailor Moon DVD box-set. I know it contains all the episodes for season one uncut, however, I need to know the following before getting it.

1) As I said, I'm 13 years old. In my Best Buy store, the age recommendation says ''Ages 15 and up''. I've happend to know what the actual series contain, but do you think it would be okay if I viewed it?.

2) Are the subtitles removeable? And do the episodes contain the Japanese title cards, in their actual language (sorry if this is causing any confusion, and for my horrible grammar)?.

3) How are the picture and audio quality? I hear that it isn't really that good, but I'd rather here fans opinions.

4) Do you recommend this DVD box-set?

Help would be much appereciated, and I would like to say it's good to see a actual board on Sailor Moon.

"15 up" is a HUGE exaggeration. I'd say the contents of this box set would be suitable for most 8 year olds ^^;
2) Are the subtitles removeable? And do the episodes contain the Japanese title cards, in their actual language (sorry if this is causing any confusion, and for my horrible grammar)?.
Yes and yes. However, the credit text in the openings and endings is in English.
3) How are the picture and audio quality? I hear that it isn't really that good, but I'd rather here fans opinions.
The video quality is pretty good... I have no real issues with it. The audio quality is awful, but just about bearable.
4) Do you recommend this DVD box-set?
Definitely. As much as I hate the crappy audio (and, to a lesser extent, the other little problems like the prologues being in the wrong place and the next episode previews being missing), it's a series that's well worth owning.

How much depth do you need in answer to that last question? How much do you know about Sailor Moon already before making your decision?

Oh, and it's not strange at all that you're male. Sailor Moon has tons of teenage male fans, me included :D

Thanks!.

Oh, and one more little thing. Are their any extras? Just a question, I'll still buy it even if it doesn't contain the much. About the audio quality, just how bad is it?.

Eh, I for one, don't recommend purchasing this set. While the video quality is fairly tolerable, it will be the worst in your collection, not to mention it will have poor audio. The only real seller to this product is the very nice packaging. If you can live with the poor quality of the DVDs they contain, then you should go for it. If not, then I'd stay away (though I'd personally stay away anyway to not support this bad release).

Edit a couple minutes later:

If you want to hear how bad the audio is, go to http://demaagd.com/anime/dvdbugs/s.html#smoon1 and hear for yourself. It also has clips of the same scenes from the original LD release to compare from and see just how bad the release really is.

I'd buy the first box set if you can get it cheap.

I'm passing on the second. Same audio and video issues, plus a missing episode, some sets have a few seconds of dub audio(it's a laugh. But if I wanted to hear THAT laugh, I'd have kept my dub discs),
and some questionable subtitle choices(I understand the reasoning behind Ali, but no, it makes no sense in real usage. There's no excuse for "elimination" to replace "hallation" either. Nor was Crescent Moon Wand appropriate for the first set).

And the fact it retails for so much influences my decision. Truth be told, I'm holding out for a decent quality Asian bootleg. After seeing the Stars bootleg set, I'm hoping the same people put one out.

So?

Post by Sailor Solider » Fri Oct 24, 2003 7:45 pm

To MarioKnight:

If you ask me, it doesn't sound all that bad. I've heard much worse things in my Uncle's Television stereos. I really sure if you make some audio adjustments (in the T.V. that is), you can make it sound from horrible to somewhat descent. Perhaps even raise the volume on it. I mean, how many Animes get releases like this in the US? ADV at least gave SM fans something. As long as it's descent, it's okay with me.

If you want to buy it at a decent price go to this link: http://www.missiondirect.com/missiondir ... 2727031328
It would cost $91 including shipping.

I'd reccomend it, but not strongly or anything. The audio is terrible. If you can spend the money, go ahead.

thanks for posting that link. It's got the cheapest price I've seen for the R boxset.

Since no one mentioned it here yet, there is no "Subtitles" menu to turn the subtitles on or off. They are turned on automatically. But if you want them off, you have to use your remote control and press the "subtitles" button. Then it will go off. If you don't have that button, then there's no other way.

Also, I know some boxsets at eBay for the first season sold at $30 and under where it's sealed. But if you choose to bid, lots of people might overbid you therefore the price will rise. But it's still worth a shot.

Also, since they have the video glitch in one episode, don't you think you should wait until ADV has fixed it on all of the unsold boxsets? They are going to fix it right? It's best to buy an un-glitched one than to buy one, and then mail the entire thing to get it fixed. :? Good luck!

I really don't think ADV would do such a thing. I mean, fans who spended money on those DVD's wouldn't be to thrilled if they made a new set, with all its improved errors.

Oh well, I do hope they do indeed do it.

I really shouldn't have to make any adjustments to the audio in anyway, and raising the volume doesn't excatly solve much since then you have a low buzz more noticable. ADV hasn't offered me any reason to get their products over my fansubs and possible bootleg DVDs in the future if I can find any. Pioneer did, they released their Sailor Moon merchandise well done, it wasn't perfect or anything, but a good release. If ADV wants my money for their Sailor Moon products, then they have to give me a good product. I'm all for supporting anime companies bringing it over here with purchasing their products (see my DVD list in the other anime forum), but if they provide a crappy product, screw them, I'll spend my hard earned money elsewhere from a company who obviously wants my money and works for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Every season 2 boxset that's being produced now has the dub thing fixed, so I don't see why they wouldn't do that for the season 1 set.

Not to mention they barely acknowledge any problem at all. Seems like they were just waiting for the bad discs to just weed out of the stores.

Fine then, I think it better if I rented it. However, that's if I could find a copy in a video rental store.

I doubt you'll be able to find any rental stores that'll have this for rent. They may have the seperate Sailor Moon videos and DVDs for rent, but I doubt they'd have the Season One and R boxsets for rent. If I were you, I'd wait a few months until ADV Films have fixed the problems with episode 24. After they fix it, all you have to worry about is the bad audio quality.

Alright. I just hope the the DVD's don't go out out of stock buy the time they do that. Oh, hasn't their been R2 DVD's released of the show? And is their by any chance the ADV might fix the flaws?.
