Boxed sets

Post by Rzto » Tue Sep 07, 2004 3:35 pm

Sorry if there is already topic about the same question, but at least I didn´t find out any.

I just recently (last sunday) saw 15 minutes of Sailor Moons first episode and I was totally sold. I started immediately searchint Net for boxed sets of Sailor Moons episodes, but I haven´t got it totally clear yet.
So, is there any good alternatives for ADV:s boxed sets of Sailor Moons first and second seasons? I would prefer original Japanese with subtitles over any dubbed one. I know ADV is OOP, but I can can handle that out.
And what about the other seasons? What are the best boxed sets?
Or is it so that there isn´t any good choices, and I have to keep on watching that crappy Swedish-dubbed version...

Well, I (personally) wouldn't recomend any other box set outside ADV for the first 2 seasons. S and SuperS are being released in box sets soon if not already I believe by ... genvid, but don't quote me. It dosn't matter really, just look it up at a movie store on line. And Stars has never been licensed in north america, however, there are plenty of fan subs out there. I got mine off of E-bay and am VERY satisfied!

About how much do they(Sailor Stars Fansubs) run for on E-Bay? I am thinking of getting one if I can afford it or even find one.

Option one: VKLL still offers Stars and Ami-chan no Hatsukoi on DVD.

Option Two: AnimeSuki has the episodes for download via bittorrent.

Suggestion: DO NOT GET THEM FROM EBAY!

Take Reiko's advice. A lot of people on ebay are scammers. My friend bought a box set there back in March and never recieved it. Also, people like to sell burned discs as legitimate DVDs.

Jupiter23 asked a question about E-bay. There was no need to jump in with two completely seperate options. If you do not know the answer to his/her question, don't bother.

Yes, and people like LadyTempest have had complete success with it.

Guys, I know a lot of you disapprove of bootlegs and buying these things off of e-bay and the like, but please stop trying to constantly discourage people from discussing it or suggesting it.

If anyone has an answer to jupiter23's ACTUAL question, I'm sure he/she would appreciate it.

Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

May I make a point here? Of course the Stars are bootlegs. But you know what? It's the only way you're going to get to see it. I don't understand how people can get so irritated over bootlegs, yet advertise fansubs? What's the difference, really? We've been over this before, several times. If you don't like the bootlegs, don't buy them. But they are still an option.

Oh, and the best set I've seen was $80. It was a really pretty set that I plan on buying one day.

Okay, I think I´ll get one of the ADV's boxes, but how about these Pioneer boxes, are these of any good?

I have the Pioneer/GenEON (hah, got it right that time  ) Sailor Moon Movies and they're pretty good. I ALSO have the really pretty set for $80 that Parakiss was talking about. I got it off of a site run through e-bay, I think that it was called the Sailor Moon shop, but I don't have a link or anything, sorry. They are burnt DVD's that they did themselves from bootlegs, but they're really good AND they give you information about things that you might not understand about japanese culture so that you can get some of the little jokes and stuff.
Oh, FYI, that site also sells the "unaired in North America" episodes, the SuperS specials, the Ami special thingy, and the S and SuperS seasons as well as other SM merchandise, but mostly the show.

Sorry for going off-topic here, but I think the difference is that often times bootlegs will have really crappy releases compared to fansubs, at least that's why I hate bootlegs. I have a Hong Kong bootleg copy of Macross: Do You Remember Love? and while it's no different than me owning a fansub of it as this movie isn't licensed in the U.S., my bootleg copy of it cut out some footage from the movie despite the fact that it's an English subtitled release.

Meanwhile, I have yet to see a fansub cut out any footage from any fansubbed anime I've seen. Back on-topic, I'd definetly recommend getting Geneon's Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon Supers DVD boxsets. Sailor Moon S is probably one of the best seasons in the series and Geneon's DVD release is really well done compared to ADV's, but there's already a thread about ADV's crappy DVDs elsewhere, so I won't go into detail about it.

Thank You, Tiff-san. I was only asking for prices on E-Bay, because I don't have a credit card and E-Bay I know for sure takes money orders, and, to add to your point about people having success with it, my boyfriend has also bought stuff from E-Bay and has also had success. So E-Bay is not a total loss.

I have had gook luck with eBay. I bought my set for 30-40 dollars on ebay. The subtitles were of excellent quilty, little grammatical errors, and so was the video. I only had one problem on the 6th episode where the subtitle scripts appeared before the scene came to pass. When the scene fianlly came there were no subtitles for the dialouge. That was the only error I encountered with it (I still need to watch the last few episodes).

The seller I purchased it from, neko_dvd, is no longer in business. I'm not sure what happened I just know they have no products. If you search ebay and find a decent price please use common sense and look at their feedback/rating. Read what other people have to say about the seller before purchasing it. If their negative comments outweigh the positive, don't buy through that user even if the price is nice. I know that sounds a bit recycled, but It's the best advice I can give you.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

A few more questions about concepts you use.
Are fansubs simply English subtitles made by fans for Japanese region releases? And are these subs burned to the DVD or simple files like subtitles for DivX movies?
And if I have got it right bootleg stands, in other words, for a pirate version? Am I right?

Fansubs are English-subtitled releases of shows made by fans, and they're usually for series that haven't been released in other countries.

They're usually part of the video file; I haven't ever seen them done another way.

And a bootleg version is a pirated version, pretty much. The quality of bootlegs varies a lot; sometimes it's excellent quality, sometimes not so much.

I got my Sailor Stars box set on E-bay for around $60. :) The quality is pretty much the same as what Tempest said.

I have a question about the ADV box sets. Somebody told me they heard bad things about them, like Sailor Moon R season left in 12 seconds of English dialouge, and a whole episode was cut out. Also, I heard that the audio on the ADV box sets of the first two seasons sounds muffled. Does anybody own the box sets of Sailor Moon or Sailor Moon R, and can tell me if what I heard is true?

It was hit and miss with the SMR set and the English dialogue. Our set doesn't have it, but a lot of people have reported that they do. ADV has a program to replace the discs with the English dialogue, should you get one.

As for the missing episode, episode 68? was left out. Toei didn't want to give up the rights to it. I haven't seen it, but every account of it I've read has deemed it filler, so I don't mind that it got cut too much.

The sound's a little muffled at times, but I don't think it's too terrible.

It was 67. It was filler, and not really a good one, in my opinion. But anyways, I thought that episode 67 wasn't on the first batch of dvd's that went out, and then was added in. Is that wrong?
