Nostalgia

Post by TrebekCrow » Sat Jul 31, 2004 11:40 am

Even with all the dub-bashing that occurs, I still enjoy watching my dubbed Sailor Moon (which is now...almost 6 years old...wow) tapes. As I've grown and explored anime since that time, I've actually gained a greater appreciation for the dub as a seperate entity from the original anime. As such, I find myself enjoying at least parts of it when I watch it. Certian episodes (such as the 'Lost Episodes', 'Treed', 'Day of Destiny', 'Secret Garden', and 'Final Battle', to name a few) I enjoy no matter what language they are in. Others, I enjoy in different ways (such as 'The Culture Fest is for Me?! Queen Rei Sings With Passion'/'Raye's Day in the Spotlight).

Am I the only one who feels this way? Also, oddly enough, I'm only familiar with the DiC dub, so the Cloverway/CWI dub may be totally different.

I can see the DiC dub as a separate entity from the original in which I can say, "oh, how cute, I use to watch this when I was a little kid." Sure, it brings back happy childhood memories. However, it's only the DiC dub which does so, since I watched the Cloverway dub much later in my childhood and thus the Cloverway dub doesn't bring back fond memories, only bad ones.

amen to that!

Though, these days, I dislike the dub compared to the original, I still think it's cute on it's own. It brings back great memories when I was in elementary school, while the cloverway dubs bring back bad ones because it aired while I was in junior high, and it was utterly, utterly, hell.

While I, too, prefer the original version to the dub, I also get a tingling of nostalgia whenever I watch the English version. The DiC dub was the cartoon that got me back into liking anime, and for that, I think, it will have a special place in my heart. It was also the first cartoon to make me feel for the characters since Transformers: The Movie back when I was 5 or so; even with the shoddy work the company did with certain episodes, they succeeded quite well in dealing with others, especially "A Friend in Wolf's Clothing", which to this day is my favorite episode.

*shrug* Yep. I completely prefer the original, and while it is done rarely, I do occasionally break out the dub tape and watch it for a bit. It's usually for the reasons you mentioned..to go "hah hah I used to watch this!". I usually laugh at the stupid dialog and the like.

that's just the i feel. i hate the dub, but it's still fun to make fun of or just watch for nostalgia purposes.

Did I make it sound like I preferred the dub to the original? That certianly wasn't my purpose in writing this, and it's certianly untrue. What is true, however, is that I appreciate the dub for what it is, and (mostly) in the ways that you've all pointed out (especially Starscream, who's obviously a Deceptacon at heart).

...o_O; No..I don't know why yo uthought that. Those of us who prefer the original were simply making it clear that we watch the dub for the sheer purpose of mindless entertainment or nostalgia.

I'm not quite sure if this could be called nostalgia or not, since I've only been a Moon fan since I was 14 or so, (5 years ago as of this post), but the dubbed version of the Love Contest S episode is nostalgic because it's the first dubbed TV BSSM one I saw! Not to mention it introduced me to the character who made me like being androgynous with short hair. (Sailor Uranus, that is) Unlike most BSSM fans, I started with the Cloverway dub and thus am more attached to it than the DiC one.

One thing I think is very FUNNY to watch is something I can do with my S season DVDs. I like to watch the dub with the subtitles, and it's hilarious, in my opinion, to see the writing saying something completely different than what the characters are saying!

I LOVE doing that. Just to point at the screen and say, "No! Look right there! That's what you're supposed to be saying!"

And I remember the first dub SM I ever saw: it was the Raye introduction episode. I remembered being impressed that they used the word "vapid" on a children's show, and I was quickly hooked. I didn't miss one episode on my local channel at 4 PM for 13 weeks. Amazingly, the first time I was away and forgot to tape it was the rebroadcast of the Raye ep. So I had seen them all and didn't know it.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

The first episode I saw was "Bad Hair Day", I think it was called...I was incredibly confused. x__X

I can't remember the first episode I've seen. It's been too long and I was far too young to remember.

EDIT: OMG I just had a flashback and I'm not kidding! The first episode I saw was "Time Bomb"!

I started the dub on the first episode - what was it, A Moon Star is Born? I think they were hyping the premiere on Fox Kids and I was desperate to see it. I'd read so much about Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon on the internet, already knew all the original characters and had watched a couple of random downloaded bits and pieces in Japanese. And oh boy, how I hated the English version! Now, however, I look back at the first season dub and think "how cute." The sweet nostalgia isn't quite there, but the memories of standing up and crying "man, this is terrible!" will remain forever.

I watch the S and SuperS dub with the subs on, too! The hilarity!

That might be curable with the proper ointment.

*slaps herself for that*
The only nostalgia I get from watching the DiC dub is; "I can't believe I spent all of that money on these VHS tapes." Then I proceed to tear up.

I am more attached to the Cloverway dub, as the S season on CN was what introduced me to Sailor Moon, and anime in general. Thinking back to some of the horrible voices and stupid dialogue, I really have to wonder why I continued to watch the show. But, my perseverance paid off and I was introduced to a really spectacular anime. So, nostalgia is fun, but once I hear "PLUTO DEADLY SCREAM!" the fun turns evil and throws stuff at me.

The first episode I saw was the original pilot for the DiC dub which premiered on Fox Kids like a couple months before the show went into it's original syndicated run. It was "The Return of Sailor Moon." Few people remember it though.

As others have said I prefer the original version, but I like to watch the dub to bring back memories. The first episode I remember wathching is "Little Miss Manners" ("To Be a True Princess? Usagi in Special Training").

I can't remember the last time I watched the dub. Perhaps the short time it came back to CN for the nostalgic value. I haven't watched any of the original since last summer, I think.

The first dub episode I saw was the one with the painter who didn't do he work under her real name. But at the time I thought the series was pretty stupid. I started liking it more in the peisode where Serena was revealed to be the Moon Princess.

The first dub episode I saw was the episode before Amy was introduced. I picked up the original with 'Usagi Reflects! The Road to Stardom is Severe' - simply because it was the earliest episode I could find.

I have most of the Sailor Moon VHS tapes. I only put them on when I'm feeling like making fun of DiC. (which is almost ALL the time.)
"Oh yeah. Someone is definitely tired of breathing." ("The Main Man", Part 1)

I'm writing this Sailor Moon/Green Lantern crossover AU fic called "Emerald Sunrise". It's a hybrid of Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance, and Comedy. It's about Ami (Sailor Mercury) getting a new boyfriend who just happens to be a member of The Green Lantern Corps. I'm also throwing in some other characters from other animes and some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the late '60's early '70's. I'm also illustrating it as well. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

"Dead Man Walking!!!!!!!"
