SM RPG?

Post by Kalika » Tue Jul 27, 2004 3:35 pm

Has anyone played the SM RPG?

I just snagged a copy of the Sailor Moon Role-Playing and Resource Book off of ebay, and it looks absolutely wonderful. But it seems to be dead as far as the internet goes. Granted, it's pretty old, and Sailor Moon isn't all that popular around here, but I'd think that I'd be able to find ONE site around that has general info about it, and possibly some downloadable character sheets. But *poof* none! -_-;

I have a copy of the book, but I've never actually gamed with it. It uses dub names for the most part. It has character stats for the first two dub seasons, plus the Outers.

As for how it works, it's similar to Dungeons and Dragons in that it's a pen-and-paper RPG - if you've played one of those, you know that a lot of things are dice-roll determined, and that there's one game master that keeps things flowing smoothly.

I imagine for character sheets you could modify those used for Dungeons and Dragons to fit their system pretty easily, and I'm pretty sure there are some in the back of the book too that you could photocopy.

As for why there isn't much information, it wasn't very widely released (I had to order my copy through my local comic/gaming store at the time I got it, which was several years ago), and Guardians of Order, who released it, lost the rights to use Sailor Moon characters a year or two after its publication.

a great resource book

Post by Mattio » Fri Jul 30, 2004 3:09 pm

I bought the book a couple years ago because I liked the pictures and the episode summaries and such.

But other than that its worthless. It teaches you some game that I never cared to learn to play. Not enough people around me like sailor moon to try and play, and it just seems kinda boring.

Sailor Moon Roleplaying Game and Resource Book

Post by Kaleth-Adara » Tue Oct 05, 2004 8:43 am

Has anyone here played this before or have it? I've wanted it since it was released but I didn't manage to get it. I finally ordered it last night. All reviews I've seen of it were great but I was wondering what you guys think. I'm a big Sailor Moon fan (of course) plus I'm really into pen and paper RPGs (so far have tried D&D and BESM d20) so think I'll enjoy this too.

Here's a picture for those who don't know what I'm talking about. It was created by Guardians of Order, the people who created the Big Eyes Small Mouth (BESM) game. It's been out of print for a while now because of licensing issues.

I've had that book since I was 19. I loved it. Boy, it's been a long time since I last looked at it. It was an awesome resource on Sailor Moon.....to a point. If I remember correctly, wasn't there a school girl's article?

I never got to the role playing, but it did give me some story ideas for a book of my own. It also had the lyrics to Moonlight Legend. I was very surprised.

I have it. I made TONS of character descriptions and pictures off of it (of Otaku Senshi I had but never actually wrote about) and tried to play the game with my parents but I found it too tedious and prefer doing role-playing talk (also called "character talk" in my house) without a book of guidlines. I don't even use it on online RPGs that I start (partially because not everyone might have it anyway).

Also, it's responsible for spreading inaccurate information about the later seasons of Sailor Moon, for these reasons:
1) They're a Canadian company, and they made up stats about the Starlights that are seen everywhere. Problem is, the thing talks about the anime, yet some of these stats are ONLY relevant to the manga. For example, here are the band parts given to Taiki and Yaten:
Taiki-guitar
Yaten-keyboard
Problem? So far as I remember from my multiple viewings of SailorStars, these are switched. Taiki is almost always seen playing a keyboard, even in episode 175 when they're doing voice practicing Taiki's playing it while Yaten sings, and so far as I remember, she never once uses a guitar. And we see Yaten use the guitar in the concert with Michiru. Now these are opposite in the manga, yes, but the book pertains to the anime.
2) Making up years the Senshi were born in. In fact, there's a big problem with doing it for the Starlights, and it's described at this link here:

just when I thought I had a maximum on SM knowledge. just goes ta show ya that ya can learn something new every day. like how I know a hidden cheat for the SM:AS SNES ROM, and the length of the story according to chapters. but this is a first... An RPG resource book, and it's innacurate, I mean, holy shit! I hope a better one is released with stats based on the Japanese version, with the differences between the anime and manga. then again, we may see a new SM title on a new console.*suspisious incinuation nudge* then again, I heard it was only a rumor.
I appologize for offending anyone. I regret the wrongs I have commited, and am deeply sorry.

It's highly unlikely that will ever happen due to the licencing issues. I will not believe any rumors until I see some proof.

As a side note Raptor, and I'm saying this as nicely as I can, but please, watch your spelling and grammar. It gets really irritating when people type lyke dis.

Raptor: You do know that the resource book being referred to here isn't a strategy guide for Another Story, right?

It's along the lines of Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop RPGs. It's been out of print for several years (the publisher lost the license). It is a good resource up to a point, and it isn't completely wrong, just inaccurate in places.

I own a copy; I've never run a game (though I wouldn't mind participating in one at some point for a lark), but it's certainly worth the money if tabletop RPGs are your cup of tea.

The stats being wrong for the Starlights is no big deal. If I do convince my friends to play with me (probably not too hard between the Sailor Moon and pen and paper RPG fans) they won't want to be the Starlights anyway, having never seen the final season for themselves. Honestly I see a lot of competition for who gets to be Sailor Mars, and the scary thing is these people who would probably want to be her are all guys.

*Blink* What's wrong with that?

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

If you're lucky, you'll find a copy hiding somewhere in bookstores that specialize in Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Tabletop/Pen-and-paper RPGs. Ni-ban got me a copy of it - along with "Book of Youma, V. 1" - at this place called "Pandemonium" here in Boston. Sadly, it was the only one they had. But like Kaleth-Adara said, it's out of print, so good luck ^^

MOD EDIT: Oh, it seems there was already a SM RPG thread here from July. I decided to merge 'em since they both ask similar questions ^^

I'm writing this Sailor Moon/Green Lantern crossover AU fic called "Emerald Sunrise". It's a hybrid of Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance, and Comedy. It's about Ami (Sailor Mercury) getting a new boyfriend who just happens to be a member of The Green Lantern Corps. I'm also throwing in some other characters from other animes and some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the late '60's early '70's. I'm also illustrating it as well. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

Yeah, I got the book for Christmas my first year of getting into Sailor Moon. I never used it for the RP, though. It actually taught me a lot about the Outer Senshi and the Starlights, since I had just seen the first two seasons of Sailor Moon (and the Japanese SS movie, I think...) before. So I appreciate it for that fact only. =)

And Rainbow, are you sure the book claims that Yaten plays the keyboard? *confused* I could have sworn they say that Taiki does, while Yaten is on guitar. Maybe I'm just remembering it wrong. *toddles off to go find the book*

I'm pretty sure that's what the book says. The book is, in that respect, accurate the manga but not to the anime. In the ANIME, Taiki plays the keyboard and Yaten plays the guitar.

But if yours is different, possibly it got changed when someone saw the anime? (since the book is based off the anime instead of the manga)
