For the longest time, I thought that Aino was pronounced "A (as in letter A) no". It wasn't until I listened to Ai No Senshi that I was like, "Wait, what the hell?" ^^;; And I thought that Kaioh was Kay-oh, and that Michiru was Muh-chee-roo. I still don't exactly know how to pronounce her name ^^;;

I'd say the given name is more like to Mee-chee-roo. And the "oo" is closer to the sound in "book" than the one in "moon." None of the Japanese vowels are as long or as voiced as English ones; they're all breathy and short. So you've kind of got to listen and pick up the sounds.

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

the final u in Michiru's name would be the same sound the u makes in "uber" as in "uberhuman" or something. ^^; Sorry that's a bad example.......

I when I found out that Tuxedo Mask's original name was Tuxedo Kamen, I thought it was pronounced Kaymen.

yeah as I said in another post , the "u" sound in Michiru, Usagi, etc doesn't exist in English. The pronunciation of the "u" in uber is actually a pretty good example. ^^; Another one would be the "ou" in the French word "voulez"

It depends. When you say "short and breathy" you might be refering to the mumured vowels (that's what they call it) at the end of some words, depending on the consonant it follows. Like how the "i" in senshi is said very softly. You'd hear the "i" voiced if somebody was shouting the word drawing it out, or in a song.

Japanese and English share plenty of the same vowel sounds. The "o" in Minako is the same as the "o" in the English word "code". The Japanese vowel sounds for "i" as in "ikuze", and "a" as in "Ami" are also found in English. They're the EXACT same sounds you here in "keep", and "ability" (the "a") respectively. And there are some other possible Japanese vowel sounds that exist in both languages.

Now that I think about it, I mispronounce Naoko's last name. I always pronouced it "Tahk-oo-chee" but from what I can hear from that Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Making Of, it's pronouced "Tahk-eh-chii"

I also used to mispronounce Toei's naem as "Toe-eye."

(Resurecting this from the dead--me bored, I sowwy)

I used to pronounce Haruka "Hey-RUK-uh", so it'd sound kinda like "Hey-recker" if I said it too fast. ^^;;

Usagi used to be "You-saggy" a while back. XD

For the longest time, I'd pronounce Ami (Ah-mee) as Amy... But that get's confusing since that's her dub name.... So.... Yeah, lol.

Mamoru Chiba used to be Mamoru Chibi.... Hehehe, I kick myself for that all the time.

I still screw up with Tomoe (To-mo-E?) and Hotaru by using the dub pronounciations.

I used to try and pronounce Marzipanu Castle (SS movie), but the screw up's were too extreme, so I think I blocked them all away, lol.

The usual Chibi-U.S.A. thing.

I never knew how to pronounce "Makoto" until I saw the Japanese version. So I just called Mako "Mike". :roll:

I used to say "To-mo" (although, since I go to a club where anime is screened in Japanese only, my pronounciation has since been corrected).

Also, when I first got really into anime with Evangelion, I was pronouncing things left right and centre in the American fashion. I have since recalled the Japanese I did with Kumon--where we got to learn with actual Japanese people (although I later slipped up on pronouncing a certain other TV show's name through exposure to that particular show's even worse hackjob). But generally my pronounciation's pretty much correct for someone who's been out of classes since 1996.

while we're talking about pronunciation, I've never actually heard anyone say the name of the SuperS season. Is it pronounced supers (pl.of super) or super-es because it's capitalized?

Supers. This is because S is Super (you can hear it in the CMBreak intro/outro), where only SM become a Super Sailor. While in SS, all of the Inner group does.

Heh... when I first heard the eye-catch music for SuperS, I thought they were singing "Sailor Moon Spaz." I didn't catch the 'u' in 'supers' until I listened to it a few times.

Usagi was You-soggy.
Ami was Amy.
Hotaru Tomoe was Ho-TAW-rew To-mo. (I still slip up on Tomoe.)
Naoko Takeuchi was Nay-ko Take-oochi. (Apparently I'm taking oochies. o_0)

Once I started watching the Japanese version, I started pronouncing my middle name Keira, with Japanese pronunciation rules. My mother intended it to be pronounced Kee-rah, but now I always tell people it's Keh-rah, with a rolled 'r.' I suppose intentional mispronunciation of my own name doesn't count, though. ^^;

I had a friend who was *convinced* that Yaten's name was pronounced "YAY-ten." We even got in an argument about it. Keep in mind, this was even *after* she had watched the season with me. -_- However, we've both been taking Japanese classes here in college, and are having a great time finding all the thing's we've said wrong. She also emailed me one day saying, "ha! It *isn't* pronouced 'say-yuki'!" and I was like "what the hell, I never said it *was.* I knew it was 'sigh-yuki' because the 'ai' sound is in Ai no Senshi. 0_o" But that's a little off topic.
