Mispronounced Names

Post by Celexa » Thu Jul 22, 2004 3:39 pm

What are some Sailor Moon names you horribly mispronounced before you learned better?

Usagi
yew-sah-jee

Ami
Amy

Seiya
soy-ah

Tomoe
Pronouced it the dub way, toh-moh

Yaten
This wasn't as much a mispronunciation as lack of syllables, but I used to mispronounce her name as Ya-n, a small pause between the A sound and N sound

Taiki
Tah-key

Diana
dee-ah-nah
It's because I have a friend with their name pronounced and spelled like that ^^;;

Hino
High-no

Kaioh
Kay-oh

EDIT
Hmm...I'm bad at typing out how I said Kaioh. Baiscally I said the first part like the word "okay" without the O.

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

When Takeuchi Naoko was scheduled for an appeareance here in America, SOS gave a primer page on how to treat her, and they said her name was pronounced "nay-oh-ko." I'll still catch myself saying that sometimes. Also, they suggested we use the honorific, "-sensei," which even then I didn't think was right.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

I pronounced Usagi the same way you did. Usagi.

Chibi-usa
Chibi-usa.

Tomoe (the same as you)

I more or less got the rest of them correct. ^^;

The first time I saw Chibi-Usa's name, it was written "Sailor Chibi-USA." So, for the longest time, I pronounced it "Chibi-Yew-Es-Ay"

And I believe that it is appropriate to address Naoko as sensei. It can mean someone you admire greatly and wish to learn from, not just like teacher.

I used to pronounce Usagi just like you to, that and I thought Chibi-usa was Chibi-U.S.A 0__o;

Haruka was Hay-ru-ka pronounced really fast (like Hayru-ka

Michiru was pronounced Michi-ru

Instead of pronouncing it Koonzite, I pronounced Kunzite (Like condition). Only until I saw PGSM did I learn I was wrong.

I'm usually pretty good with pronunciation, cause I mean, once you know the rules it's pretty simple, however, up until last week, I was mistakenly pronouncing Naoko's name as "nay-oh-ko", not even realizing it's "Nah-oh-ko". I can't believe I never realized my horrendous error.

I used to say To-mo as well, in fact, I actually had that in a comparion until I realized it was To-Mo-Eh. D'oh.

Usagi = You-soggy. Chibi-usa was Chibi You-sa. I think I also misprounouced Hotaru's name. I'm...still not sure what it is. I'll have to watch my stars eps again. For the longest time, it was Sailor Sensh-eye.
I had *no* idea it was pronounced Koonzite. I always thought it was Kunzite. o_0.
I actually probably pronounce a *lot* of the names wrong...I'm just not that familiar with their original names spoken out loud. I really try, now, tho, to get them right.

Kaioh
Kay-oh
Isn't her name spelled Keioh? Which would be pronounced "Kay-oh"?

EDIT: That looked really funky. It has been fixed.

Kunzite - being named after George Fredrick Kunz - is more accurately pronounced "Kount-site", the "ou" sound similar to "could". "Kunsaito", in which the "u" comes off like "oo", is just a close Japanese approximation ^^;;

When I first got a hold of some Japanese Sailor Moon merchandise, I used the Mario Paint instructions to give myself a quick katakana/hiragana lesson, only I didn't know about the marks used to change how some sound (for example, は is "ha", ば is "ba", and ぱ is "pa"). Thus:

Chiba Mamoru = "Chiha Mamoru"
Usagi = "Usaki"
Jadeite = "Chedeite" or something o_O

and so on. Then I saw a real episode and all was made well =D

Hotaru: Done the dub way, Hoe-Taw-Roo, instead of rolling the R slightly, "Hoh-tah-ru".

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

What I don't like about the dub pronouciation of Hotaru is the way they turn the o into a schwa and accent the second syllable. "Huh-TAH-roo" wheras the Japanese pronounciation is more like "HOH-tah-ru."

^^; Yes, that's what I meant. Thank you. I'm horrid at typing out pronunciations.

Used to:
Aino
(ei-no)

Taiki
(tay-kee, like the word take with an "ee" on the end, I was weirded out by the real pronouncation because I thought it sounded too much like "tyke.")

Still mess up out of habit:
Yaten
(yeah-tin)

Tomoe
(toh-moh)

I think I also used to pronounce "seiya" as "seye-yah", like the sound in the word "eye".

And while I KNOW the correct pronunciation of Tomoe, I still have a hard time saying it.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?

-Ami was the same as Amy and just a different spelling

-the "ou" in Kaiou, Meiou, Ten'ou, and Ginzuishou were pronounced the same as the "oo" in the word food. I thought the same thing about the u in Usagi and Chibi-Usa. Well I thought this about Japanese "u" in general. When it's actually the same sound as a French "u", which isn't the same vowel sound as "food"

-Tomoe was the way you'd say it if it was English (like the dub. the "e" was silent). Instead of "To-mo-eh"

-The "i's" in Chibi-Usa's name were pronounced like the "i" in "it"

Kaori was "Kay-o-ree" again because that's probably how you'd say it if it was an English name

I don't mean to brag, but I've never had a problem with pronounciations. I've been studying Japanese for three years (three years in high school, and I continue to study on my own) and I had only started watching the Japanese version of the show two years ago. When I talk about the characters I use their Japanese names and I use the Japanese pronounciation, so people often times don't know what character I'm talking about. XD

I used to think that Haruka's name was "Heh-roo-kah" and Princess Snow Kaguya was pronounced the same way the English version pronounced it.

When I first saw Chibi-Usa's name on the internet, before I saw the R and S seasons in Japanese, I called her Chibi-U.S.A., because I thought she was from America.

And today I can honestly admit i was a complete dumbass back then.

I thought the same thing about Chibi-Usa (pronounced the letters separately) I still mess up on Usagi every once in a while, saying it Yew-sagi. And I'd also put the emphasis on the second syllable in Haruka (Ha-ROO-ka) and Kaguya (Ka-GOO-ya)
