Clones bad

Post by MarioKnight » Mon Dec 22, 2003 2:39 am

Some of you may have noticed that lazyasianboi had recentally decided to make a new account for himself rather than use the one he alread made, and after dealing with that situation (which consisted of deleting the new account, all the posts that came from it, and editing a few posts that had a post of his quoted), it seems I must again address something that is just plain common sense on all Internet forums, including here.

One person = one forum account per forum

To me, this is simple logic, as it seems to be for 95% of the people here. But like in any society, the minority has to ruin things for the majority when posts like this need to be made to address the lower 5%. Plain and simple, if I catch anyone that has clones of themselves on these forums, to save myself the trouble of repeating what I did the past few minutes, both accounts are getting permanent banned, no warning. There's no reason for this, and I hope that this will keep it from ever happening again.

Well, I think it's a good idea.

Thing is, I couldn't do that on the boards I'm now an admin for, because, well, I don't understand the technical part of it, but someone explained to me that the IP adresses can rotate between people when they're not fixed (in France that is) so someone can have the IP that another person had three months ago (which is happening).

Also, we have cousins (or sisters and brothers) who create separate accounts (which is normal ^^;;;;;;;; ) and they post at each other's place, which make they IP the same for some messages.

Though we had the case of a freak who created 16 accounts (yup) just for the sake of creating accounts, and to scare away a lovely Japanese girl who had done nothing T_T

So, I do think your idea is excellent cause it does indeed save a lot of time and trouble, but what if something like I mentioned above happened ?

*maybe the rotating IP thingie can't happen in the US, I don't know ^^;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

The cousin thing or the 16 account thing? 1 account per person/email address, If I grasped the post correctly. All cloned accounts are to be deleted and the offending user is banned without warning. I think AOL rotates IP address. So, if you log in with 1 IP one time, it will be a different one the second time around.

No worries about me. I only go by 2 names on the internet. (1) Tempest and (2)Suzanna. Most commonly "Tempest".

It IS common sense, and for those who are doing this, we will not hesitate to permanently ban you. There's NO REASON for this to go on.
Dan works his ass off to keep these forums running well, and it's these few people that make him have to work even harder. It's ridiculous and asinine.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Why would anyone want two accounts, unless you have like multiple personality's. One is hard enough to keep track of.
Nothing sucks like a Jed-kun - The "sloganize" web site.

Emma: What do you think? Superpowers, a scintillating wit and the best body money can buy... and I still rate below a corpse. ::storms off in a huff::

Well, their is a couple of reasons people sign up for multiple accounts.

(1)They no longer like their original screenname and, if you can't change it like some PHPBB forums allow you to, they just make a whole new account.
(2)Some people like to give the illusion of having "friends" or "reletives" join the forums. I'm not saying that people don't have reletives that join the same forums. My sister and I both belong to some of the same forums. But that excuse is convinet when someone misbehaives or breaks a rules. Then their "reletive" will show up under a different screename with the excuse, "That was my little brother/Sister". Instead of simply apologzing or leaving completely, The "bad reletive" will disappear while the "good reletive" remains with a fresh start.

I know the second theory sounds dumb, I've been a part of forums where that has happened.

Yup, having two accounts is hard to follow. Heck, being on various boards is even harder than that.

Though, yeah, what I say has happened. Hopefully the other admins know better than I do... and Dan sure does a really good job.

I'd like to be able to do like him, and Tiff, and the Chibi-mods T_T

Nope, i've seen it happen plenty of times. Someone will come on with a string of curses or something, and then they'll go "oh, that was my little brother", and then "little brother" will show up with a new screenname and go "i'm sorry can I stay?" and the circle keeps going. It's idiotic.
