Planned forum downtimes

With the phobos project finally coming all together and near complete, the final step in pointing the domain to phobos and then moving the forums on it is closing in fast. Because of this, I would like to make everyone aware of forum downages in this time, with each ieally not lasting more than 10 minutes. Normally I wouldn't care too much about an interval so small, but knowing my luck simple things will take forever. Here are the plannned downages:

1) Sunday or Monday evening. What day this occurs is pretty much up to my ISP. If their office is open when I call for another IP, then Sunday (today), if not then a definite Monday. This downage will occur because with the new IP coming in, I've got to make some changes to our house network between switches and routers and such

2) 24 - 48 hours after the first. It takes a domain normally about that long to sync with a new server, usually more towards the 24, I really hope so. Once the domain works with phobos, then forums off as I transfer them over. Speaking of which, I have practiced this already, there wil be NO data loss in the transfer.

Alrighty then. "No data loss" includes bans, right? *Looks at pookie and shakes her head piteously* Anyway, down means they won't load, right?

It means that I'm first going to turn off the forums so a message appears saying their off at the time I do my work. In the case of #1, there won't be an internet connection going to cosmos for a short time, so it will appear that nothing is working.

Small update, I just got off the phone with my ISP, so after I get home (7:30-ish) I will be rearranging some of the switches and routers in the house.

Downtime 1 complete, around 10 minutes if I kept track correctly. ^_^ Time to configre new router and then point domain here and be this close to done. ^_^

How many forum transfers do you have to do?

Only 1, hopefully to be done by Tuesday night. The only reason I had to have them off for a bit today was to redo some network configurations around the house to prepare for the domain name move.

Yes, back to our domain where they should be rather than my housemate's domain. I am THIS close to the end of this project, once the domain is set to here and the forums are moved, this project is complete, and I might regain some of my sanity and such. ^^;;;;

^_^;;; Haven't decided yet, I was collecting images for a new avatar for me before I went insane and saw that one, and I've grown used to this one. We'll see. ^^;

For the record, last night's downtime was not planned. Since neither me or Hugh were home, we don't know what happened, but I guess Hugh was able to get Mike to fix enough for him over the phone to finish the job from his parent's house.

Geez, cosmos decided to not like us twice now with neither me or Hugh there to take care of it. -_-;;; Phobos has been fine throughout, and I have good news. Either tomorrow night or the night after, the domain will be pointing to phobos! ^_^ Once I see that it's pointed, the forums will be moved to their rightful home, and I am DONE. ^_^

Edit many hours later: Cookie for anyone who can tell me the differences in the index page of the site between current host and phobos. Start taking a good look at the page now, sometime throughout the day or evening (Saturday) or such the site should be pointing over to phobos. ^_^

Ok, #2 downtime on the first post here is FINALLY going to happen. Apparentally when I had the name servers set to change, something went wrong in the back end to where they didn't update outside to the public. This has been corrected, and we are definetly now in the 24 - 48 hour period of time for the domain to point over here, as the whois servers finally updated this afternoon. Most likely tomorrow evening, as late as Thursday evening, the forums will be turned off to move them to their rightful place. This should take only about 10 minutes, but I would say to expect about 30 minutes of downtime. I want to make sure that no data is lost, all avatars uploaded get moved over, and to change links in posts that contain forum URLs to have the corrected URLs. After that, the forums will be open up again in their rightful place, and I am finally going to drink that 40oz bottle of beer I've been saving for this occasion. ^^;;;; Thank you all for your patience during this time.

It's 2AM, and I am offically DONE. Domain pointed over here at about 1:30-ish, and I have completed moving the forums, and am DONE. Too bad it's not the weekend, or else I'd be drinking that celebration beer right now. ^^;;;

Eh, I was more concerned about the time of night to drink, 1:30 - 2am is too late on a weeknight. Anyways, I have a reason to drink now as I have just gotten all the mail stuff setup including my e-mail address, happy times! *already downed close to a 1/3 of that 40oz bottle* ^^;;;;
