Domains moving soon

Well, I'm sure that everyone noticed that phobos has been pretty unreliable, especially in the past few months or so. Between problems with the server itself, added in with the internet around me sometimes acting up, and stupid 5-second power outages, the advantages of running everything from phobos just aren't there anymore. So sometime within a week, I will be moving everything on my domains to a reliable pay host. Everything will have 99.99% guaranteed uptime, and probably a lot faster than phobos. It was a fun project, but there's just been to many problems as of late to really keep it going. I don't know exactly when I'll be moving everything right now, but it will be within a week, and I will give a day or two notice before I do so. The forums will be turned off for the move until it's complete. I'm hoping that this will solve speed and reliability issues that we've been having lately.

I've always liked that SMU was on a private server, because the site never had to conform to a provider's Terms and Conditions. I hope that the site won't be forced to compromise its principles (specifically, rule 20) in order to get reliablity and speed. But, there aren't too many bad decisions made here, so I trust that the move will be beneficial.

That shouldn't be a problem, I read through the TOS of the host I'll be moving everything to, and nothing will have to be compromised.

I also want to give notice right now that anytime after 11PM EST tonight, I will be turning the forums off so I can start moving stuff. They will be turned back on once successfully moved to the new host, but it may be a day or two before anyone sees this due to the DNS changes. Everything is all set for me to start the move, and I will be moving everything after work.

Are we going to have to sign up again or just go to a different url address?

I dont have much internet knowledge so I have no idea whats going to happen really

Probably not. Dan will be backing up the database for these forums. Aftarward he'll install the forums on the new server then he'll restore the database using the backs he made. If everything goes smoothly all the information will be intact.

This won't adversely affect the current banner competition, will it? It sounds like the deadline for the contest and the forum downtime could be going on at the same time.

No, the forum will be down in a matter of minutes, and will be up on the new server immediately. It just may be about 24 hours before the Internet notices the domain on the new server. The contest won't be affected since the change over will be complete well before the weekend get's here.

That's not really possible. If it were moving to phobos, I could since it's just my IP addy, but since it's the addy of the new host, I have no idea what it could be. It will only be a day, I'm sure y'all can survive.

ONLY now? I changed the DNS at like 2AM and everywhere says to not really expect anything for almost 24 hours. I'm fricken ecstatic right now with how little time it took. ^_^ Shit, I saw the changes almost immeditely. o.o;;

Uh, hon? This probably was caused by the move somehow, so I'm posting it here. I noticed that the Top Posters list is glitchy now, it doesn't sort right. When you go to the Memberlist and try to sort by Total Post, I mean. Actually, all of the sorting methods might be messed up. Database error?

That's really annoying to me because I use that feature all the time. ^^;

EDIT: Okay, I checked, name sorting works fine. I think it's just post count.
