Forum Upgrade forthcoming

Post by MarioKnight » Tue Nov 11, 2008 8:56 pm

After some thought on and off over the months, and a quick chat with the rest of the forum staff, we're going to upgrade the forums to phpBB 3 which was released earlier in the year. It's got a lot of fun features, and a lot of the stuff I had added onto the current phpBB 2 forums by default. Nothing will be lost as there is a converter in the install script, so no worries on that front. Really, besides the look of the forums, the only thing y'all should notice different is that with the new security features, it will be much easier for new users to create accounts. I have been failing on that front as my code for the account request form somehow stopped working a while ago, I just haven't gotten around to figuring out why so I can fix it, and even when it was working I was still slow to actually add new accounts. *sweat drop* Thankfully, there is a lot more security coded in version 3 so I don't have to do manuals again thank god.

So rollout for the upgrade is planned for Friday. I'm free all day so I don't know exactly when it will be, but be prepared for downtime at any time.

I'm afraid that security-wise PHPBB 3 is not any better than PHPBB 2 :(
Due to non-stop spamming and vandalizm shortly after upgrading to PHPBB 3 I disabled on my forum registration feature altogether and was obliged to write from a scratch a new php script that allowed new users only to send requests for accounts and I was creating them manually. Now I am constantly updating and rewriting that script, adding checks for proxy servers, time zones, filters for swearings and what not.
As soon as spammers will start to attack this forum there will be no choice but to go back to manual creation of new accounts by admins. PHPBB 3 doesn't offer anything new in this field.

Chalk up yet another failure on my list for converting boards to phpbb3. -_- Don't know why I thought it would be different for me this time around on this board, or even why I can't make use of shit already made, but I'm done with it for now. May try again at some point, we'll see what happens.

That's disappointing to hear, but good to know, thanks for the heads up!

I've been working on tweaking some of the code on the main site and decided to give the upgrade for here another go. Since I have a good system now I tried to do the upgrade locally on my laptop, and it was successful. ^_^ So sometime in the next few days I will upgrade them on the actual site here. Might be later tonight, might be my next day off, I haven't decided on a set time to do it yet, but it's something we can all look forward to.
