Thanks! It was fun to read exactly what was changed. I still remembered the dub of that episode really well and I thought the whole bit about Haruna escorting these kids was stupid. I agree; her Japanese character was a lot funnier than the dub.
EDIT: At this rate, you'll have episodes 45 and 46 done in no time! I really look forword to those comparisions!

Well my goal which I might have a chance of meeting, is to have season 1 done by year's end. It'll be tough, but almost possible with how my schedule is setup. I get two done a week now, and if I get more time and the living room on a weekend I can do one or two then, though that is pushing it. I'm hoping to get as many as I can done before the semester ends since I'll be working a lot in both jobs for Christmas season and probably won't be in my house that often, which means there'll be a few weeks with me doing very little until the Christmas rush dies down.
On a sidenote, does anyone happen to have a capture of dub episode 18, "An Animated Mess"? Just a video file I can play on the comouter, not a VHS itself. 3 years ago, either I messed up (which I doubt, since I was very careful to get them all taped back then) or Fox did since my tapes skips right over the episode. >.< If anyone has a capture they can send me, that would be great to save me from having to order the DVD (they didn't have anyu of the DiC dub DVDs at the mall today >.<) that would be great.

Yeah. I can't wait to see what they say about Sailor Moon R.Sailor Sapphire wrote:At the rate these are going, you'll probably have the R episodes up before too long!
By the way, Dan-san (or maybe Bob-san could answer this), are you using two different TVs to do these comparisons or are you doing it in a different way? I am just curious to know, thanks.

I can't speak for Bob and what he uses, but here's the setup I'm currently using. My livingroom has two TVs in it, each with an AV box (the left one has two AV boxes) and a DVD player connected to them, and an RF switchbox to change the VCR and digital cable between the TVs. The main/left TV has the surround sound speakers through it's AV boxes. How I do comparisons is that I have the ADV DVD box play through the DVD player on the left TV with the sound muted, and have the VCR play the dub tapes on the right TV with the sound on. With the two remotes I have the episodes play side by side and take notes on the changes in video and script and resync the episodes after I'm done with a note. If I ever get a new VCR in my room, or the dub DVDs, then I can do them in my room with my TV and computer.

Interesting. I think I saw Bob-san say once that he uses the two TV method also, but I wanted to be sure, as there are any number of ways that the comparisons could be done, some of the ones I could come up with more easier than the others.

I used the two TV method too. I had my normal TV in my room and I brought in a crappy TV we never used and set it up next to my regular TV. I also took a crappy VCR and hooked that up to the crappy TV. I watched the subbed VHSs on the crappy TV with no sound and the dub VHSs that I taped (S and SuperS) or that Dan loaned me (Classic) on my regular TV with the sound on. Then I'd just use the rewind and pause buttons to get the tapes in sync and then I'd watch them.
I have a notebook FULL of notes from S and SuperS. LOL, maybe I should auction it off on e-bay.

Wow, it's so great that you guys are doing comparisons again! Great job, it's always so fun to read things like this and make fun of dumbass dubbing
However, I noticed a bit of a mistake in episode 19:

The Japanese word for gate should be "torii". "Tora" means tigerThe kanji on the tora (gate) of Rei's shrine is intact, as is the kana on her love letter envelope.
You will bow to me!

Yeah, I figured that out in ART361 today when we were learning about the temples and such, I knew it was tor-something and was going to fix it when I got back home, but forgot. ^^; Thanx for the reminder. ^_^ *fixes it*sailorspazz wrote:The Japanese word for gate should be "torii". One thing in Episode 19's comparison:
"Moon calls Mars Raye in the dub right when Tuxedo Mask is standing there on the roof with everyone.
Good one DiC. But why stop there? Why not give out her telephone number and address too! -_-;; "
If you listen closely, in the original version, Mars blows Mercury's identity (previous post of mine):
"In the episode "Usagi is Thrilled! Tuxedo Mask's Love Letter" when Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Naru (unconscious) and Tuxedo Mask are up on the roof (after the elevator), Mars and Moon are fighting, Mercury tells Mars not to fight, but then Mars blows Mercury's identity when she says "Not you too, Ami! You're going to side with Sailor Moon?!" =P"
So it kinda evens itself out (sorta) since it happened in the original version too =P
EDIT: I was just watching my dub DVDs, and there's one scene in Ep 22 that'll be fun to see you do comparisons on...*watches as American kids don't jump off balconys*

I just noticed something in the episode 17 comparison concerning the commentary on the second cut.
Kinji doesn't go to Rei's school, this is part of a dub error. Dic said Peter goes to Raye's school, but Kinji wouldn't go to Rei's school since she goes to an all-girls school. Unless he's a Starlight in secret or something.<snip> ...photos taken by Kinji Shinokawa, a student who attends a nearby school (coincidentally, Rei's school).

Yay! More episode comparisions! *glomps the SMU staff and thanks them for updating the site with wonderful comparisions* There was one line DiC made up in episode 19 that I actually thought was kind of funnier than what Sailor Moon said in the original. It was when Tuxedo Kamen was telling her to run away and that he would fight Nephrite, so Sailor Moon says, "Go right ahead, be my guest. *a few seconds later* What am I doing?! I've got to help him!" For some reason, I thought that line was kind of funny....Also, my theory about the Japanese text being left in some scenes and being cut in others was that maybe DiC only changes the Japanese text when they want you to read something or if they think it's in the foreground too much. That, or their crazy. Either way works. ^^;;

If I remember correctly, Rei only attended an All-Girls school in the manga. I remember Rei saying something about Kijin attending her school. *checks*Celexa wrote:I just noticed something in the episode 17 comparison concerning the commentary on the second cut.

EDIT: Kijin attends the Gojongi (I think that's how it was spelled) school, and Rei attends the T.A. Girls School.

In case you guys didn't read the latest update during the shit period, the breif hiatus of the comparisons will soon be over, as I have ordered the DVDs containing the missing episode from my tapes, an episode potentially missed, and the pilot of dub episode 41 which is going to be real fun comparing original to DiC1 and DiC2 when I get that far. These discs will be arriving today, tracking says they're out for delivery so hopefully they'll be in my porch by the time I get home after my last class so I can pick up where I left off. So comparisons for episodes 20 (whenever Bob feels like doing all the work for a skipped episode =P ) and 21 should be up within the next few days.
