Greatest Fears

Post by Jonathan » Wed Jun 02, 2004 9:18 pm

What are your greatest fears, or what were your greatest fears? How did you overcome it?

I actually have two:

Elevators used to scare the hell out of me. When I used to live in New York, the elevators would get stuck all the time. I would curl up to a little ball and cry, but my mom always somehow got us out. When we moved to CT, I don't know how, but they stopped scaring me.

My number one fear, which I still didn't get over, are airplanes. When me and my brothers were coming back from the Dominican Republic, it was raining and the plane shook, and that traumatized me. September 11 made my traumatization into a fear that I will never get over. I will never, ever get on any plane again...

This is really an off-topic subject, so it's being moved there.

And to contribute:

Slight fear: Bee and Wasp family. I'm not so much scared to death of them, but on warm days, or when near bushes or trees, I'm always on alert for these guys, and try my best to steer clear if I see one in front of me or to my side.

Phobia-like: Heights, but this one's weird. I get a little freaked-out if I'm at the top of a building, or looking over the edge of a waist-high bannister, but I'm totally cool with rollercoasters and planes.

EDIT: Might as well make my post in this one rather than a completely different post ^^;

hm... I'm not sure...

probebly Heights. Not that bad, when I'm on a plane it dosen't phase me... but when I get on a Roller Coaster... it is one HELL of a different story. I can't look at how high I go on the Millennium force, or even the magnum *Cedar Point rides* Gemini dosen't phase me, neither does the Raptor... I think it's the 200< feet that scares me... I am NEVER going on the Dragster... *shudder*

Bugs. I can't stand them. I always go running in the opposite direction when one comes my way. One time I accidentally broke my sister's headphones that I sat on in the seat when we were in the car because a bee had managed to get in and was buzzing around. Whenever there's a bug near me that I want to be gotten rid of (I can't think of the right word here), I'll go get someone else to do it for me. The same can also be said of spiders. The only bugs I don't mind killing on my own are those annoying little gnats because they're not quite so big and gross and I actually like fireflies because they're so pretty when they glow. :D

Spiders. My fear of them is so great it takes over my mind and just eats away at me. I don't mind tiny spiders, of course, but the big ones, especially harmful ones like Black Widows and Brown Recluses... oh, jeez...

For some reason, deep water scares me. Not like 11 or 12 feet deep water, but like 50, 100 foot water, where you can't see the bottom. I guess I'm afraid that a shark is going to come up out of nowhere and eat me. Even in lakes (like Lake Mead) where there are no sharks, or anything dangerous for that matter, I get a little uneasy. I'm better now that I'm older, but I think i'd still be a little uncomfortable.

I went through a phase where i was afraid of heights and airplanes (even though before that I had been fine) but i got over that pretty quickly (it only lasted maybe 2 years max). Now they don't bother me at all.

Hmm, I know I have others but they're not really coming to mind. I have a strong dislike of bugs and especially spiders, but a FEAR of them, i'm not sure. I definately don't like them though.

Mine is definately elevators without a dealt! My fear of elevators is so bad that at one time when i was in a hotel room near the top floor (around 30 floors) I still went down the stairs instead, and trust me it takes ages going up and down and tiring to :?

Also i have a phobia of closed and dark spaces which also makes me not like any type of elevator.

One of my smaller phobias is bees. I HATE bees. I don't know if it's because they have stingers or what, but I am DEATHLY AFRAID of bees / wasps. The closest I'll allow one to get to me is something like three yards.

My greatest fear is actually death. I know it may sound weird, but that's the one thing I fear most. I don't know where I'm going, what happens, or if, my greatest fear of all, my conciousness just dissapears completely. It sort of upsets me to talk about it, but typing and the like are OK to a certain extent.

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

Fire. I'm completely pyrophobic, to the point of not being able to light candles. The other night we had major storms in our area, and the lights went out...I had to call my mom and have her talk me through lighting the candles. It look me about 5 tries.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Heights is a phobia that I have. For more abstract fears, I am very afraid of loneliness, debt, and the future.

I'm terrified of being closed in someplace with no escape and being tied down to things. Being the flighty person I am, I freak out when I'm not able to just leave situations behind and go someplace else.

Just last weekend, while camping, I had a major panic attack after arriving at the campsite. Camping is like a cage to me, only with mosquitoes, trees, and poison ivy. There's nowhere to roam, nowhere to run to when I get upset, and if I feel down, I can't really cry and feel better because no matter where I am, the whole campground can hear me. It's like a cage on a stage, I guess.

To get away, I grabbed my bicycle and rode off, not answering my dad's questions about where I was going, and tried to find someplace to go. Some coffeshop or... something. Anything. Idiot me, obviously couldn't find a Starbucks, so I pedaled back sniffling.

Camping is also tied to my ideas of being dependant and of my dad's world, since my dad and I camped tons when I was little. I'm a teenager, so I'm trying to break away from that.

I'm also terrified of commitment. Getting married is one of my big fears. Hell, just having a partner for more than a week makes me feel very uneasy. I can't manage it.

I'm, like some others, was terrified of elevators as a child. This phobia began when I was trapped in old elevator with my father and grandmother, probably around the age of 6 (We were going to see "The Lion King" in an old theatre). After that, the only elevators I felt comfortable in were "open" elevators (with windoes, such as you'd find on a cruise ship). Most of the time, I was still forced to go into elevators by my family. I will never forget that hellish ride up the Bennington Battle Monument in Vermont. Fortunately, I have pretty much overcome this fear.

A newer fear of mine is the result of an accident which occured recently at Six Flags Massachusetts, in which a man was thrown to his death from the Superman rollercoaster. I live in Florida now, but I used to ride that coaster constantly, seeing as I only lived a short drive from the park. Now that I live in greater Orlando aka theme park central, I don't know how this is going to affect me. I haven't been to any parks since the news, but I think next time I may sit the coasters out.

Bees. I'm always afraid of getting stung on ANY part of my body; I'm afraid they might get under my clothes if I'm not watching... >.<;;; I tend to go into a complete frenzy if there's one near me, even it's just one of those fuzzy bumblebees.

I'm terrified of heights, and more particularly, of falling down from them. I won't get close to an edge looking down from a high place.

I'm also afraid of going down escalators. I can trace this back to an incident when I was little - someone pushed past me when I was on an escalator going down, so hard that I almost fell down it. My dad had to grab my shirt and pull me back.

I'm also afraid of bees and wasps, but I'm very allergic to them, so I think it's a healthy fear.

I fear bees, but the biggest fear I have lies in my nightmares. Everytime I have one, I either die and come back and everyone's sad, or someone (boyfriend, family, friend, anyone) dies and I'm left alone. Sometime my whole family disappears, or my father kills them then I kill him and I go to jail... I'm happy I don't have those nightmares often but when I wake up, I'm all dizzy and shaking from that T_T

I'm afraid of heights. It makes me uneasy, but I don't get totally freaked out. Once I'm on a plane, it's not so bad. Skydiving is something I could never do.

I'm also afraid of bees/wasps. I got stung by a wasp when I was a kid and I've been freaked out by them ever since. However, large fuzzy bumble bees called drones don't bother me because they can't sting. Honeybees and smaller bumble bees (I don't know the terms for these bumble bees) do sting and I try to avoid them at all costs.

Well, as a kid I used to be afraid of spiders, but not anymore. And also, when I was about 7, I was afraid of swimming in lakes with fish because I was afraid they were going to bite me. ^^;; I was a pretty stupid kid.

As for now, I'm kind of claustrophobic. I start getting a little nervous when I walk into my closet, and I try as hard as possible to stay away from small spaces.

Another thing I'm very afraid of is waiting to go see the doctors or dentist or for anything that isn't a regular check-up. For example, when I went to have my braces put on at the orthodonist(spelling?) about two years ago, it made me very nervous and I was shaking. Other than some slight poking here and there and that disgusting pink stuff they put in your mouth, the actual procedure to put my braces on wasn't too bad. It was just the waiting for it that made me so nervous and shaky. I recently went to the denstist to have fillings done and I was so nervous while waiting, but the actual fillings wasn't bad at all; it was just the waiting for it that made me nervous.

This isn't really a fear, but it makes me uneasy. I've lived my entire life in the Fraser Valley (which technically makes me a valley girl ^^; ) and I don't like being on flat land that doesn't have mountains, like in the praries. There's just something about baren land and no mountains that freaks me out. The sort of emptieness and vastness that surrounds you is just really scarey.

I know that this quite common with people and works vice versa. My S.S. teacher told me about a friend of his who grew up on the praries, came to work in Hope (which as some reaaaaally big mofo mountains) and couldn't get up in the morning because she felt closed in.

I'm wondering it this affects anyone else.
