What annoys you most about computers/the internet?

Anything and everything (outside of the stuff on the above forums) can be discussed here.

What annoys you most about computers/the internet?

Post by RoastedTwinkies » Mon Oct 18, 2004 6:14 pm

I think the title of this thread is self explanitory ^_^

What annoys me most?

-When people type in StICkY CaPs
-When people don't watch their spelling or grammar, and type lyke they wood on msn
-When people steal HTML/graphics/essays that other people worked so hard on and pass it off as their own work, otherwise known as plagerism (sp?)
-The fact that Microsoft is basically building a monopoly, even though monopolies are illegal.

I ran out at the moment.. now it's your turn!

-Blinding fonts/text/images on a webpage or in a forum post or email. How about just in general? XD

-People who get offended by every opinion someone has on the internet, and take it so damn personally.

-Flames

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

- The marquee HTML tag (it breaks browsers, people! Don't use it!)

- lack of spelling, grammar, and punctuation

- people that don't read FAQs

- people that ask the same question 5000 times

Technical problems:

When a site is built for IE only and won't work in my browser.
When my news server won't let me use a fake e-mail address.
When things freeze up for no apparant reason.
Oh, and one thing I forgot. Pop-ups. I'm not going to buy your product. I don't want to win $40 for clicking on the duck. Stop trying to make money off of me.

Human problems ("The system is perfect--it's the users that are the problem")

-people who say "get off the net and get a life" on the net!
-cookie-cutter for-profit porn sites that get in the way of searching for free porn.
-people who want to turn the net into real life. IRL, there's a need for ettiquite, decorum, and respect. Those things belong in some cyber-places as well. But there should also be places where the attitude is "don't argue, just listen."
-mean site-owners. Yes, you don't owe us anything. Yes, we appreciate that you don't have to do the site. But if you make users feel like they're imposing, soon you won't have any to worry about.

Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

--When people bitch about Microsoft but keep using it anyway without trying to work another OS. If you despise Microsoft so much, either use Linux or buy a Mac, or make your own OS.

--When random people IM me for no reason and never even tell me who they are.

-Sailormoon.com
-People who visit a website only for the message board or chat room and then ask a question on the message board or in the chat room which they could've found out themselves and probably much faster if they had just visited the rest of the site first
-When Bittorrent is downloading a large file and you get a message that says "failed hash re-check" and the downloading has to start over.
-IRC server crashes

Things I really hate:
-banner ads with sound
-people who put really bad looping midi's on their site and no controls to turn them off (SOS is the best example for this)
-pages that have font and background colors that clash so you can't read anything
-flashing backgrounds
-spammers that don't give up, even after you remove your name from their mailing list

The Internet:

1.) Spyware and adware. I know how to get rid of it, but it's still annoying as hell.
2.) Way too much of ThIs ShIt.
3.) Forums that allow images in signatures, especially the ones who don't regulate file size. I do not want to read a one sentence post, "LOL ur funny!" followed by a 500k picture of a dancing kitty angel.
4.) OMG BRB ROFL WTF AARP LOL!!!!!!!!11
5.) Lack of punctuation.
6.) Pop-unders. Pop-ups are bad enough, but pop-unders are the chicken-shit way of advertising. "We know you'll close this window the second you see it, so we're going to hide it from you! <3"
7.) Chat room threats, "I kno whre u liv dont piss me of!" Big whoop. I know where I live, too. The question is; do you know where you live?

Computers in general:

1.) Needlessly cryptic error messages.
2.) Programs that say they're uninstalled, but still leave all of their files. If I didn't know how to go and make sure the program was really gone, my hard drive would be full by now.
3.) The salesmen who make you think you need a lot of stuff you really don't. When I got this computer, I wasn't tech savvy at all, and I ended up with a lot of really expensive stuff, most of which I don't use.
4.) Every software company has sold their soul to AOhell. Every game/program I buy asks if I want to install AOhell. No, if I wanted to install it, I'd use one of the 15,000 CD's they send me every month.
5.) No one gives props to "FreeCell."

Sites

- When the owner of a site acts as if part of the series shown on the site is their own. *coughsomefaunsubberscough*
- When the owner of a site won't listen to you if you pointed out an error politely and calmly. I had a friend (yeah it used to be a friend) who used to make lots of grammar and spelling mistakes. I told him what was wrong, trying to help, and the answer was like "Go to hell it's MY site". Oooookay.
- When same said owner bans you just because you disagreed with something they said.
- When there is no updates page/note. No way to know if the site is still alive or not.
- Grammar mistakes.
- Mistakes about a series (like, for Sailor Moon, mixing up info or taking rumors as true statements).
- Horrid graphics that makes your eyes scream.
- The midi that'll start playing with no control. I always close the site when I hear those.
- Pop-ups and all. I'm lucky I have an anti-popup bar. *bless those*
- Horizontal scrolling :P

There must be more, but you don't want to have a zillion pages of that. LOL

People online

- The ones who don't know how to spell "decently" on MSN and forums. I mean, errors are forgivable, but I hate SMS language there, just cause SMS is for phones and that's it.
- People who think the Internet is completely anonymous, so they can do what they want and tell you to fu** off when you say there are rules on a site cause it's no fun to have rules and you're mean to me waaaaaaa!
- People who don't get the meaning of "Away" or "Busy" on MSN (except the ones that just say something along "not here to chat don't worry I had something to tell you see ya later).
- People who keep sending you chain letters and hoaxes even though you gave them explanations about why it's wrong and even gave them a link to a specialized site.
- People who don't realize banning exist on forums/sites for a reason.
- People who won't read the rules even though they're clearly stated and will always say "I didn't know" when caught.
- Leechers on BT who never seed.
- Whiners who always want site owners to update and don't realize everyone has a life.
- People who steal graphics and claim it as their own (one site I loved had to close because of theft!!!)
- People who think you don't have a life because you surf (so yeah you're online too and you tell me that ?).
- People who demand you do something when there's a possibility of doing something together. Like I'm planning to sub PGSM in French with a friend, and I'm supposed to translate the scripts from English to French (with help from the Shingetsu staff sometimes) and now he's like "Do that NOW! Have you finished ?" asking the question all the time. So I'm taking my time on purpose, bleh.

Must be other stuff. I'm sure I'll be able to update later.

Computers

- When you install a software, then want to uninstall it but the software decides to leave with all your hard drive (thank God file recovery softwares exist >.< )
- When a software doesn't want to install for whatever reason when you know everything's allright.
- When a software just play on your nerves when you know you want to do something and it's possible but the software won't let you.
- How Windows XP didn't accept the creation of new profiles on my fiancé's comp. The other profiles just wouldn't work properly (mostly with the Internet).
- I don't like the SP2 cause it messed things up (though security is always good, but still).

All for now. Kinda long though ^^;;

Things that annoy me--

--Pop-ups. Plain and Simple. They can go to Hell and die.
--People on discussion forums that act like they are in a chat room, including but not limited to those who use that chat room speak (I think it's called) and repeatedly post to a topic in the same 5-minute interval
--someone else mentioned images in signatures, but also avatars that take up most of the posting room and are not regulated.
--Geocities pages and Tripod pages that have not been updated or maintained in 3 or more years

1. People who blame Microsoft because their OS keeps crashing out whether if it's caused by viruses, etc.; to that I say: Don't blame Microsoft. Blame yourself for neglecting to update your OS, or for not doing the proper maintenance on your PC (antivirus scan, firewall, etc.) And I have sympathy for those stuck on dial-up.

2. Ad-ware, which is why I gave up on Kazaa.

3. People who insist on installing a bootleg copy of WinXP (or any other software). If you want a free OS, get Linux! And yes, there are free alternatives available, like LAME for MP3 encoding, and there is free version of ZoneAlarm available.

4. Those f***in' A(w)OL CDs I get in the mail! I'll stick with broadband, thanks.

So many of you have already stated things that I can't stand.

-Viruses, Trojans and Worms. People who have way too much time on their hands and decide to make everyone's life miserable. I'm so sick of the constant scares about newer and stronger ones.
-Perverts who contact my yahoo IM and ask super sick questions.
-People who babble for paragraphs and never really get to the point. It hurts my head after a while.
-McAfee...their anti-virus majorly messed my computer up.
-when cable cuts off on me once every so many months right in the middle of a conversation or important project.
-Tech support.....need I say more.

Edit: Sorry about that, it's hard to resist adding my two cents about pop-ups.

Ahhh, that's so nice ^_^.

-People who create a site and have to analyize and research Every. Little. Thing. about a show/movie/book/creation and assume that the author/creator meant this or meant that. And then if you say something that's untrue and didn't know it they have to send you a three page long explanation about how they're right and you're wrong. As if people have time to read three pages of obsessive ramblings. -_-
-People who freak over insignifcant things on the internet.
-Pointless, stupid posts. Especially if they bring up an old topic and add jack all to it.
-Spam. JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!!! >_<

People, let's not keep posting repeats. I've seen pop-ups on about half the posts, as well as ad-aware.

Um, excuse me. I type in L337 quite frequently with friends, and that does not make me a moron. Watch what you say. All you had to say was that you didn't like L33T-Speak. You did not have to be insulting, or resort to childish namecalling.

I think all the things about the net itself were already listed so here's some things that people do which are annoying-

-People who totally nitpick and bitch about grammar and punctuation on forums. I mean if I accidently forget a couple periods or forget to capitalize my "i", it's not the end of the freakin world. You still know what the hell I meant. They tend to do this a lot in debates when they can't think of anything else to say.

-On AIM when people (friends and online ones) don't give me some time to respond and then they go "are you there!?!! why do you take so long to respond!?!" Taking a few minutes to respond (like 5) shouldn't be a big deal! It's more than likely I'm chatting with other people as well as doing homework or something.

-everytime somebody makes a "there aren't any girls on the net!" comment
"This guy are sick."- Aeris (Final Fantasy VII)

I believe he meant that as sarcasim. ^^; Directly under the 4 consecutive "pop-up" list he wrote "There. That should take care of the next few posts at least. I' pretty sure he did that on purpose to be smarmy about the mod post ParaKiss made.

- I know I'm gonna catch it for this, but on a list of top 5 aggervations, people who activly go out and correct others in spelling and grammer. I'm not talking about internet shorthand, but people who actually TRY and write a post out correctly, but ends up making grammatical errors just to be dumped down on with, "You spelled ____ and _____ wrong. Best go back and fix it". Or like what someone had done to me; quoted my post, corrected it in bold and said, "There. Now it's fixed". You people frickin' piss me off. It's not like I don't try. I try to catch every mistake I make. And out of 20 perfect posts, all they seem to see is that one frickin' error in that one frickin' post. *fumes* I know LadyFlameSniper said something like this already, but I'm just stating it again because I really don't like it.

- Internet Shorthand. Oh how I loathe thee.

- "People on the internet aren't real" quote. I guess on those few occasions that I make it on IM, I'm speaking with some sort of messanger bot that has the ablity to converse and speak of their day as if they were real.

... I had more, but I can't rmember it. The whole grammer thing drained me.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.
