Anime that you gave up on..

Post by Neo Dead Moon » Fri Feb 06, 2004 12:13 pm

Has there ever been an anime that you were really excited to see, but when you actually saw it, you were so turned off by it, you just gave up? I know I have, and here are the anime that I wanted to see, but then didn't want to see more of afterwards:

Chobits- I was a big fan of the manga, and the first two episodes were cute enough. But boring filler, Chii up the wazoo, and a very annoying, boring, zombie look-a-like anime Hideki lowered my interest in the anime very quickly.

Rurouni Kenshin- I heard it was cool, funny, and had great action scenes in it. Then I saw it, and realized that Kenshin and (insert foe here) do nothing but talk for annoyingly long lengths of time, and gave up.

Naruto- three words: ugly color palette. X_X

Hoshi no Kabii/Kirby: Right Back At Ya!- yay, an anime featuring one of my favorite Nintendo characters...is a stupid, kiddy anime. I only watch it for cameos of characters from other Kirby games, because the anime itself is little more than a 100-episode commercial.

-Both Dragon Ball and Dragonball GT. I have successfully watched NONE of the "new" episodes of Dragonball. I really wanted to watch GT, but I kept forgetting it was on. Then I realized I didn't really want to put up with X amount of episodes listening to the bad voices. So, I pretty much gave up on the Dragonball universe.
-Sonic X. I LOVE Sonic the Hedgehog, and I faithfully watched and recorded the first 8 episodes of Sonic X. Then I just recorded the next 3 or 4 because I just didn't feel like watching them. Now, I don't do either. I decided the show just wasn't spectacular enough to get up every Saturday and record. Shaman King was much the same way. But it's not really a "giving up" on Shaman King, more that it just isn't on at a good time. I REALLY like Shaman King.
-Big O. Big O was just terrible. I watched maybe the first week of it, then I was like, "bleah, this is no good." It reminded me too much of Batman. And the robots were ugly.
For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then, something happened which unleashed the powers of our imagination: we learned to talk- Stephen Hawking

Magic Knight Rayearth: I really loved the manga and I was really exicited to watch the anime, but the first season was a major letdown for me. I don't think I want to bother watching the rest of the series now.
Escaflowne-I've seen the movie version, read the shounen manga, and I've seen Escaflowne a few times on tv, and I liked what I saw so far, but when I finally saw the tvseries it was really dissappointing. Don't get me wrong; Escaflowne is a good anime, but it didn't really pull me into it's universe as much as I had hoped it would. I guess I was expceting too much of it or something.

Love Hina - Oh man. After, like, the 20th episode kept repeating the same idea over and over and over and over again, I dropped it. Same situation with the manga, really.

Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac - Really, it's the dub that's gotten me somewhat turned off from this one. I hate when they butcher a classic like this; I'll have to catch the unedited version some time.

Dragon Ball Z- the several episodes that supposivly took place in three minutes really did it for me.

Naruto-The colors are blinding and I just can't really get into it...

Yugioh-I liked it before it became a series about card games, after that I found it really dull to watch other people play cards.

Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies. I thought I'd like them, but they were both WAY too serious for me, especially the latter.

Reign: The Conqueror. I love Alexander the Great, so I was really excited about an anime series about him. But everything about it turned me off. The art style, the voices, the overall feel of the show, it was just bad.

InuYasha. I enjoyed InuYasha in the beginning, but as it continues, I find myself getting bored with it. Even Naraku, the cunning ingenious bastard whom I love is beginning to bore me.

Chobits: Bleah..just, bleah. I love the manga, but I couldn't stand anime-version Hideki. He just wore on my nerves.

Magic Knight Rayearth: -_- there's only so much you can cram into a show before it becomes TOO much. I got tired of the fact that it became a shoujo/mecha/drama/comedy all rolled into one. It was good at first, but as soon as the giant robots entered the picture, I threw it out of my anime list.

Weiss Kreuz: I loved this show up until toward the end..then it just dragged. And dragged. and dragged.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I liked Reign ^_^ I thought it was unusual and hypnotic. *smacks self to get back on topic*

Inu Yasha : I tried to watch the subtitles before it premired on CN, then I tried to watch the dub. I just couldn't. It's not a bad series, I just couldn't get into it.

Aquarian Age : B-O-R-I-N-G. Ugg. The episodes just dragged and dragged. 1 episode felt like an hour and a half. I've had the import box-set since christmas and I've only seen 3 episodes. Argh.

Evangelion....I gave up on this series after the first two episodes. The plot is way to freaky; many of my friends agree with me.

Oh yes, I forgot. Evangelion. I watched 8 episodes of it, thinking I'd like it, but, like the others I rejected, it was too serious for me. I do like the characters, though, so it's not in the "dislike" category because of that.

Cowboy Bebop- It started out okay and then began to bore me. I think what bothered me most was how the episodes were like never connected to each other. Also the plot and most of the characters were just blah. I enjoyed the movie though.

Dragonball series- Doesn't interest me. I watched a lot of episodes of DBZ, some of DB. and I found them to be a real drag. DB GT was ok at first but then it got boring.

That's about it... there aren't many other series I tried to like a lot and just gave up on. Most of the time I at least watch all the episodes if it's short. Or if I think it really sucks, I stop after the first couple.

My thing is generally comedy/fantasy stuff, especially if it has characters that I think are interesting. And GotF is NOT comedy, nor is it really a fantasy, it's a WWII history anime that got WAY too depressing to me...I watch stuff to have fun, not to cry over it!

Sorry if I sounded too defensive. I just wanted to elaborate more on why I didn't like it. I'm not angry at you, Tiff...hmm, yet another thing that makes me "weird."

As long as I'm doing more explaining, the reason I thought I'd like Princess Mononoke is because I heard the girl was tough and feral and her description in one of my books about anime reminded me of my beloved Elkhound, Diana, but...oh well.

I've got a really big list of stuff I wanted to see, but then stopped. Many people said I should give some of these series a longer look, but I doubt that I will.

.hack -> So slow! Bored me to death. And I usually like fantasy-type series, too.

Bottle Fairy -> Thought it might be like Sugar (a series I really like ... DVD 6 coming out soon!). Boy was I wrong on that one.

Nuku Nuku TV -> Like almost everyone, I loved the OVA's. The TV series was just too weird, though. I've heard Dash! was even worse, but I haven't really seen it yet.

Witch Hunter Robin -> So repetitive. We marathoned 17 of them in a row. By #5, I was ready to stop. By #17, I was ready to kill myself. (I was in charge of the showing at our anime club, and everyone else wanted to keep going, so we did).

I would include Chobits, except I did see it all (our anime club showed the entire series). I think I had at least 3 separate rants on the last board about how boring Chobits had gotten (it was OK at first). In particular, Sumomo started out cute, but got so irritating that everyone in the club started hoping something would happen to her. When she got electrocuted once, everyone started cheering, including me. But then she recovered, and everyone booed. (In short, our club members are insane.)

LOL Yes, I watched TWO episodes of that and got bored with it.

DragonBall series - I thought I'd like it since my friend does, but I just didn't like it. It bored me some.

YuGiOh - I watched an episode and I really didn't like it at all.

Pokemon - It was fine at first, but then it got really repetitive and the 500+ pokemon thing is really starting to get on my nerves.

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

I haven't given up on a series yet. But there are some I struggle to finish.

MKR - I'm currently stopped in the middle of season 2. It's getting kinda dull and predictable.

Wedding Peach - My tolerance for pink cute things is abnormally high, but it's not THIS high.

Magic Knight Rayearth - I really like the manga, and I really liked the first season of the TV series. The OVAs were what drove me to give up, as they are nothing like either.

Tenchi Muyo - Every episode/OAV/movie ends the same way, and yes, I've seen enough to know. Washu's the only reason I'd bother sitting down to watch any of it at this point.

Sonic X - This would be better without the human cast, I'm sure of it. Look at the first ABC TV series for proof.

A Little Snow Fairy Sugar - I don't know, I looooove sugary sweet series, but this one....I never got the urge for the next DVD. I had higher priorities.

.Hack//Sign - After getting 2 DVDs for this series, I really didn't enjoy it. The main character is alwasy whinning, and I just want to slap him in the face. I will stick with the manga.

Wedding Peach - I have 2 volumes of the manga, and I can't seem to get through the second book >< I don't know, I might pick it up later.

Excel Saga - I have the first 4 DVDs, but I got lazy and didn't buy the rest. Still curious about it, but not that much.
