Spam

Post by Sailorasteroid » Thu Aug 24, 2006 3:55 pm

I seem to notice that we're getting more spam posts these days, really obvious ones that are probably bots and look terrible both in subject and in post. So two questions:

1) Is there a reason we're being targetted more frequently? Did someone on SMU piss someone off who posted the url on spam-attracting sites? Or is it just a general proliferation of spam on Phpbb sites?

2) Can something be done to limit or stop it? Might it be better to delete the spam threads rather than just locking them? Or should we just put up with them and let the staff handle it as they have?(which is perfectly acceptable--the staff around here does so much for us as is)

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

1. We're not sure, but it's probably the latter; some members (I won't name names unless they'd like to step forward themselves) have said they've found lists of spammers similar to what we have received on other sites.

2. Eh, deleting the threads won't stop anything, and since it's Dan's database, I'm hesitant to remove any topic unless the title is extremely explicit, which none of these are so far. Aside from this, we ARE considering a number of countermeasures, but again, I'll leave it to the admins to discuss them publicly if they so choose.

I used to run another forum (that granted, was hardly ever used, and so I gave it up) and I had the same exact problem. Not exactly sure why but yeah, it seems bots are signing up.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner since it was quite a while ago that I told Dan this was happening on my old forum.

We've been noticing the spammers too. For the record, registration has been closed for the time being until we can sort things out. =o

I haven't said anything yet but I saw one of your spammers with the exact same message on another forum.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.
